68: 68. Early Warning
When only the two of them were left in the private room, Xu Ting finally took off her mask of pretense, let out a long breath, and looked at the door with bright eyes.
Just then, Lu Feng walked in with a plate of roasted meat and said with a smile, "Is it done?"
Yu Tianxiong stood up and said, "Yes, sir."
Xu Ting held the contract and said with a beaming smile, "What should I do, Xiao Lu? Every time I say that Sister Xu is helping you, but every time I, Sister Xu, benefit more from you. It makes me a little embarrassed."
"That's not true. If it weren't for Sister Xu's help, I... Old Yu, someone without even the qualifications, wouldn't be able to buy land. We're just helping each other."
Xu Ting looked at him with a complex expression: "No matter what, Sister Xu owes you a favor."
Now that the matter was finally settled, the three of them celebrated in the private room. Xu Ting was very happy and had a few extra drinks, her face flushed.
They chatted for a long time during this meal, from company development to corporate planning. Most of the time, Xu Ting was talking and Lu Feng was listening. In this setting, Yu Tianxiong also treated himself as invisible, only speaking when he was asked a question.
"I almost forgot, Xiao Lu, you're about to go to university, aren't you?"
Lu Feng nodded and said, "Yes, it's just a few days until school starts."
Xu Ting pursed her lips and smiled: "If those real estate magnates knew that the person behind Tingfeng Capital, who has them running in circles, is actually a high school student, they'd probably be scared to death. You, sometimes, are truly unfathomable."
She took a sip of wine, looking at Lu Feng's profile under the lights. He still carried the unique innocence and youthfulness of a teenager, his eyes bright, yet shrouded in a layer of unfathomable mystery.
Too contradictory.
Xu Ting had never seen anyone like this.
After three rounds of drinks and five courses of food, the three of them stood up to leave, feeling satisfied. By this time, Xu Ting was a little tipsy. Lu Feng and Yu Tianxiong escorted her downstairs.
It was already dark outside, with the streetlights coming on. Jiangcheng's night scenery was dazzling and charming. Xu Ting then remembered that she had driven here.
In this situation, she couldn't drive back. Just as she was about to call her secretary for a designated driver, Xu Ting suddenly remembered something and looked at Lu Feng, saying, "Oh, right, Xiao Lu, are you still staying in a hotel?"
Lu Feng nodded.
Xu Ting raised an eyebrow: "How can that be? You're going to university here, you should prepare a property for backup. Sister Xu has a nice apartment on Banshan East Road, which should be perfect for you. Come on, while there's still time, I'll take you to see it."
Lu Feng was about to decline, but Xu Ting had already taken his hand and, without explanation, led him towards the car, saying, "You can't refuse, okay? Just consider it Sister Xu's thank-you gift to you."
Lu Feng didn't know whether to laugh or cry, so he said to the silent Yu Tianxiong next to him, "Alright, Old Yu, you drive."
Yu Tianxiong nodded, opened the car door, and got in. Lu Feng helped Xu Ting into the back seat. Just as he was about to get in, his body stiffened.
Two fragmented memory scenes flashed into his mind like lightning.
This feeling was like being immersed in a dream bubble, but the difference was that his consciousness was still present.
Inside a dimly lit construction site dormitory, filled with an unpleasant smell, four burly men with scarred faces were loudly playing cards around a table, with constant shouts and curses.
Just then, the Tattooed Arm Man in charge's phone rang. He picked it up with a curse, then narrowed his eyes: "I understand."
Hanging up the phone, he kicked over the table in front of him and said, "Work's here. Get the tools ready."
The others immediately perked up, getting up to grab their things.
"Boss, who are we getting this time?"
Tattooed Arm Man picked up his phone and opened two photos he had just received, showing them to the others: "These two. They told us to break two legs each, to make sure they can't walk again."
"Huh, isn't this a student? So young?"
"Doesn't matter. They're paying double. You know what to do, right?"
Hearing about double the money, the three men present became excited and shouted, "Got it!"
Then the four of them got into the minivan at the entrance and sped towards the city center.
The scene distorted again. In a dimly lit rental room, a haggard middle-aged man finished a cigarette, took out his phone, and dialed a number: "Brother Liu, I understand. I'll go get him for you now."
With that, he grabbed his simple backpack and walked out of the room.
"Xiao Lu, are you drunk too? You seem a bit dazed."
Xu Ting's voice pulled him back to reality. Lu Feng glanced at his watch; only a dozen seconds had passed. He smiled nonchalantly and said, "It's nothing, I was just thinking about something."
He got into the car, his thoughts still lingering on the two memory fragments. It was clear that someone was after them, and it seemed to be two different groups of people.
As the car started moving, Lu Feng looked around. There was nothing unusual to his left or right, until he looked at the rear window, where a familiar minivan came into view.
Both the license plate and the condition of the car were the same as in his memory.
Xu Ting asked, puzzled, "What's wrong, Xiao Lu?"
Lu Feng shook his head: "Just saw a few bugs, that's all."
Xu Ting had been drinking, so her thoughts were a bit sluggish, and she was drowsy, so she didn't catch the meaning of Lu Feng's words. Instead, Yu Tianxiong, who was driving, frowned slightly, checked the rearview mirror, and said in a low voice, "Sir..."
"You keep driving, don't worry about it. I'll handle it," Lu Feng said with a smile.
There was a lot of traffic during rush hour. When the car reached a busy intersection, the red light came on, and the 120-second wait time made many drivers curse.
Lu Feng looked back at the minivan, which was stopped right behind his car, like a hunter closely following its prey.
"Wait for me a moment."
Lu Feng unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the car door, got out, and walked towards the crosswalk.
Inside the minivan behind him.
The Tattooed Arm Man in the passenger seat frowned: "What is this son of a bitch doing?"
"Boss, why don't we just drive over him now and seriously injure him? We can say we lost control. We'll get paid anyway, and at most, we'll spend some time in jail."
Tattooed Arm Man cursed angrily: "Idiot! Our target is two people. If we hit one and scare the other, how are we going to get him? Use your damn brain, okay? Isn't it easier to ambush them in a less crowded place!"
The henchman thought for a moment and nodded, "You're right. Hey, he seems to be standing there talking to someone, blocked by that car."
The henchman driving moved forward a little, and their view opened up. The next moment, all four of them froze.
They saw the young man actually walking towards the traffic police at the intersection and saying something to him.
"Damn it!"
Out of their sensitivity to the police, all four of them felt a sudden jolt in their hearts, a bad premonition.
"Could it be that their car broke down and they're asking the traffic police for help?"
"Very possible. They don't know we're going to make a move, so they wouldn't be on guard."
"Yeah, besides, our car windows have black tint, so they can't see us. Let's not scare ourselves!"
Listening to his subordinates, Tattooed Arm Man thought it made sense and relaxed, feeling that he had been too tense. He was about to scold his subordinates a few words to maintain his authority as the boss.
Before he could speak, his heart leaped into his throat again.
The young man was actually bringing the traffic police over.
Everyone in the minivan immediately panicked: "How is this possible? Did he discover us? This isn't scientific!"
Although Tattooed Arm Man didn't know what was going on, when he looked back and saw the machetes and baseball bats and other controlled weapons in the minivan, his heart pounded even faster.
Especially since he also had a homemade shotgun in his storage box!
If he got caught... Tattooed Arm Man couldn't imagine his fate. He could only silently pray that the young man wasn't coming for them.
As the distance between them grew shorter, the atmosphere inside the car became tense and oppressive. Everyone's nerves were like tightly stretched strings, pulled longer and longer.
Until the traffic police came to their car, stopped, tapped on the car window, and said in a deep voice, "Please show me your driver's licenses."
"Snap!"
The string broke.
