125: Chapter 125 The Battle Axe Recognizes Its Master; It's Not So Bad
The armory was on the third basement floor; the further down one went, the heavier the Devilish Qi became.
The walls on both sides of the passage were embedded with glowing magic stones, their pale light stretching Chu Sheng's shadow out long.
A Fu was left above; a place like this was not somewhere a small demon creature like him could enter.
Two pure-blood Demon Race guards at the Peak True Solidity stage stood at the entrance, their backs ramrod straight and their nostrils flared arrogantly.
One of them tossed over an iron saber; the blade was covered in rust, and the edge was as jagged as if a dog had gnawed on it.
“A Demonic Cultivator is only worthy of using this.”
The iron saber hit the ground with a harsh, clattering 'clang'.
Chu Sheng did not bend down, nor did he get angry. His gaze bypassed the two guards and landed on the deepest part of the armory.
There, a pitch-black Battle-ax stood quietly against the wall. Its blade was thick and heavy, and its handle was covered in dense Demonic Runes.
It was a Medium Grade Earth Rank weapon, and although it was damaged and its power had fallen to that of a low-grade earth artifact, the dense Devilish Qi it emitted was even purer than what Chu Sheng had absorbed at the bottom of the Duanhun River.
The guard followed his gaze and smiled with utter disdain.
“That was left behind by the previous City Lord. Our Boss has tried, and the two Demon Generals of Black Iron City have tried, but no one could make it recognize them as master. Do you think you're worthy?”
Chu Sheng ignored him. He walked over and reached out to grasp the handle of the ax.
The ax suddenly shuddered violently. The Devilish Qi, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, resisted frantically, emitting a blackish-red light so piercing that it was impossible to keep one's eyes open.
The blade hummed and buzzed, causing the entire armory to tremble. The expressions of the two guards changed, and they instinctively took half a step back.
Chu Sheng did not let go.
He activated the power of the Duobao Heavenly Venerable with all his might.
The resisting Devilish Qi was instantly silenced, as if it had been seized by the throat by an invisible hand.
Within a single breath, the Battle-ax obediently recognized him as its master. The light on the blade withdrew, and it became as docile as a pet.
Chu Sheng gave it a casual swing. The blade sliced through the air, leaving behind a black rift that lingered for a long time.
He turned around and looked at the two guards, whose mouths were still hanging open.
“This ax is not bad. Thanks.”
He shouldered the Battle-ax and walked away without looking back. Behind him, the two guards stared at each other, unable to say a single word.
When the news reached the Arena Master's ears, he was in the middle of drinking.
His wine cup stopped halfway to his lips.
Who exactly was this Demonic Cultivator, to be able to instantly refine a magic weapon that even Demon Generals could not master? He remained silent for a long time before putting down his cup and speaking.
“Invite him to the manor tonight for a seat.”
The manor was located in the deepest part of Black Iron City. Its outer walls were black, and two stone-carved demon creatures crouched at the entrance, their eyes embedded with real magic stones that glowed eerily in the darkness.
When Chu Sheng was invited into the main hall, the Arena Master was already seated in the place of honor.
He had changed into a dark red robe and held a cup of crimson wine. The aura of a Lower-ranked Demon General was released faintly, like a lazy predator sizing up its prey.
“Who exactly are you?”
Chu Sheng stood in the center of the hall, shouldering his Battle-ax, neither humble nor arrogant.
“A man who wants to stay alive.”
The Arena Master stared at him for a long time.
“Interesting. Starting tomorrow, you don't have to fight in the Gladiatorial Arena anymore. This seat is lacking a Chief Guard.”
Chu Sheng neither refused nor agreed. He simply asked a question.
“Is the treatment of a Chief Guard better than that of the Gladiatorial Arena?”
The Arena Master was stunned for a moment, then burst into loud laughter, so much so that the wine in his cup spilled out.
“Better! Ten times better!”
Chu Sheng nodded.
“Then it's a deal.”
When he returned to his residence, A Fu had already prepared hot water and food.
The water had been heated using magic stones and was rarely boiling hot. The food was the most expensive Demonic Beast meat in Black Iron City, roasted until it sizzled with fat.
Chu Sheng bathed, ate the meat, and leaned back on the couch, beginning to contemplate.
A guard at the Early Stage of Spirit Spring? Not enough.
If the immortal slaying gourd and phoenix ring were intact, he, at the Late stage of True Transformation, could have gone head-to-head with someone at the Early Stage of Spirit Spring by relying on a heaven rank magic treasure.
But now, the immortal slaying gourd was dim, the phoenix ring was shattered, the demon refining pot was cracked, and the Old Grandfather was half-dead.
The only things he had available were this damaged Battle-ax and his hidden Heavenly Demon Body.
He needed greater strength. Strong enough to walk unhindered through the Demon Realm, strong enough to never have to look at anyone else's face again.
He closed his eyes and circulated his Heavenly Demon Body. The Devilish Qi in Black Iron City was much thinner than at the bottom of the Duanhun River, but it was countless times denser than in the Tianfeng Kingdom.
As the Devilish Qi entered his body, his Meridians grew slightly hot, and the Bottleneck of the Late Stage of Transformation into Truth began to loosen.
Soon.
He was just one step away from the Spirit Sea.
Outside the window, the night sky of Black Iron City was forever dark red. In the distance, the cheers from the Gladiatorial Arena could be heard faintly.
A Fu was squatting at the door, already asleep, blowing snot bubbles as he breathed.
Looking at that ugly face, Chu Sheng suddenly felt that this place was not that bad after all.
