144: It's not easy to become rich
Knowing that Chen Xinyi said this purely for his own good, Ye Su didn't find her nagging annoying. He stood up, walked over, and pulled her into his arms. "Alright, I know. At most, I just won't help anyone next time."
Hearing that Ye Su was willing to listen to reason and wasn't insisting on being a naive college student, the worry on Chen Xinyi's face gradually faded. Leaning into Ye Su's embrace, she tilted her head to look at him. "Is my mindset a bit bad?"
"Men don't love women who aren't a little 'bad.'"
"Is that how the saying goes?"
"Whatever."
"Wait a minute." Chen Xinyi realized something was wrong. She sat up and faced Ye Su directly. "You snuck out in the middle of the night while I was asleep. Where were you planning on going?"
"Where else?" Ye Su made up an excuse on the spot. "I was hungry in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep, so I drove around to see if there was anything to eat."
Then, Ye Su turned the tables on her. "I originally planned to ask you to come with me, but you were out like a pig. I couldn't wake you up, so I had to go out by myself."
"You're the one who's like a pig!"
Chen Xinyi pounced on him, claws out, to cover up her own guilty conscience.
Lately, she had indeed noticed that her sleep quality had improved drastically. She woke up feeling refreshed every day, and even her skin condition had improved significantly. Being compared to a pig didn't seem entirely wrong.
"I surrender! I surrender!"
After some futile struggling, with her hands pinned above her head by Ye Su and being teased on the sofa, Chen Xinyi hurriedly conceded to regain her freedom.
"What happened next? Where did you go after you got him into the car?"
"Where else? To the hospital, of course. Fortunately, the doctor said the old gentleman was fine and just needed to go back and rest for the night."
"That's a relief." Chen Xinyi complained, "His family is truly something, letting an old man go out alone in the middle of the night. It's fortunate that he ran into you this time; otherwise, who knows what might have happened."
"He lives alone. He's the only one in his family, and I haven't heard him mention any family members."
"So he really is all alone. No wonder."
Taking this opportunity, Ye Su told Chen Xinyi about the house. "By the way, when the old gentleman heard that we were renting a place in Guangzhou, he insisted on letting us live in one of his vacant properties for free. It happens to be right here in this complex."
Chen Xinyi sat up straight immediately. "A house for us to live in for free!"
"Mhm."
"You didn't see that he lived alone and trick him out of his house, did you?"
"Hey!" Ye Su held Chen Xinyi down and smacked her. "Is that the kind of person I am in your eyes?"
Knowing she was in the wrong, Chen Xinyi rubbed the spot where she'd been smacked. Not daring to resist, she said weakly, "No."
"When the old gentleman said he'd let us live there, I even offered to help him rent it out so he could collect some rent every month. But he thought it was too much trouble and didn't care for that bit of rent."
"Didn't care for the rent... that doesn't sound like something a normal person would say..."
"The old gentleman said since it's just sitting empty, he might as well let us live in it. Plus, we could keep an eye on the place for him to make sure nothing leaks or needs repairs."
"Alright then."
Listening to Ye Su's description, that old gentleman was likely a wealthy Guangzhou local who didn't care about a few thousand bucks.
Besides, Ye Su had saved his life, so him not charging rent seemed reasonable enough.
If she knew that Ye Su had also accepted a canister of aged tangerine peel worth hundreds of thousands from him, Chen Xinyi probably wouldn't think that way.
"Don't be shy with the old gentleman either. He has another empty property in Yuexiu District and asked if I wanted to live there too, but I righteously refused."
"He has another one!"
She didn't even dare to imagine that one day she could own a house of her own in Guangzhou, yet some people had so many houses they couldn't even live in them all.
As a drifter in Guangzhou, Chen Xinyi felt her fragile heart had suffered a massive blow.
"The house is in Building 7. Do you want to go take a look? If you're not satisfied, I'll return the keys."
"Sure."
Led by Ye Su, the two arrived at Room 1301, Building 7.
Squeak— The house had been empty for years; even turning the key felt stiff, and when the door opened, the hinges let out a teeth-grinding screech.
With the doors and windows closed for so long, the room inevitably had a bit of a smell. The two waited at the entrance for a while before turning on the power switch.
A few electronic beeps sounded in the room, proving that the house still had power.
After turning on the lights, the two could see clearly that all the furniture in the room was covered with dust sheets.
It seemed that before the house was vacated, Ye Kaijun had specifically cleaned it once, as there wasn't much dust on them.
"The living room and kitchen are so big, and there are three bedrooms. Renting this out would fetch thousands a month, and that old gentleman just left it empty!"
"Can't help it. Who told him to be so wealthy?"
Chen Xinyi was both amazed and envious. "It's so good to be rich. I wish I'd be this rich when I'm old!"
Seeing Chen Xinyi displaying her money-loving nature again, Ye Su speechlessly flicked her forehead. "It's not hard to become rich."
"Ah!" Chen Xinyi felt the pain. She covered her forehead with one hand and slapped Ye Su angrily with the other. "Don't hit my head! You'll make me stupid if you keep hitting it!"
"Don't shift the blame; you weren't that smart to begin with."
Chen Xinyi was so angry her teeth itched. "Then you, the smart one, tell me, how can one easily become rich!"
"Reincarnation. Just die right now and get reincarnated into Old Ma's family, then you'll be rich."
"You're the one who should go die!"
Chen Xinyi ignored Ye Su and went on her own to check the condition of the three rooms.
Seeing that everything was normal, the two began to lift the dust sheets one by one.
"Thankfully, the furniture isn't moldy. We'll get someone to clean it inside and out, and get the air conditioners cleaned too, then we can move in."
Unlike Ye Su, Chen Xinyi pouted unhappily. "We haven't been renting the current place for long. The landlord definitely won't return the two-month deposit."
"Is that such a big deal?" Ye Su pulled Chen Xinyi into his arms. "I'll cover the two-month deposit for you, alright? Besides, this place doesn't have rent. If we move in and live here for two months, won't that make up for the deposit?"
"Are you stupid? If you cover the deposit for me, the landlord just gets a free ride." As a money-lover, Chen Xinyi naturally couldn't accept that. "I'd better ask the landlord if I can help him sublet the place and see if he'll return the deposit."
Saving a few thousand bucks was fine with Ye Su. "Whatever you want."
"You don't have class tomorrow morning. If you're free, I'll book a cleaning service to come over. You can open the door for them, okay?"
Since he didn't know what kind of intel would come in the early morning, Ye Su couldn't guarantee he'd have time. "I'll check the intel myself tomorrow. Just go ahead and book the cleaning service."
"That works too." Chen Xinyi urged him again, "Since we're living in his house for free, remember to go visit the old gentleman if you have time."
"I know. Before I pick you up in the afternoon, I'll buy some things to take over."
"Okay." Chen Xinyi looked around the house again. "It seems good deeds really do get rewarded."
