21: Chapter 21 Picking Up People
Early the next morning, Chen Mo drove the Rolls-Royce Cullinan straight to the gate of Modu Art University.
He wasn't here to pick up girls, nor had he brought any drinks. He was purely here to pick someone up.
Yesterday, his mom had called, saying that Auntie Zhang, an old friend of many years, had a daughter named Ling Jing studying here. Ling Jing wasn't going home for the summer vacation and wanted to stay in Modu to work, so she had asked him to look after her.
Chen Mo couldn't refuse, though he knew the truth in his heart.
This Ling Jing was his sworn sister in his previous life and had even been set up on a blind date with him. Unfortunately, back then, she hadn't taken a liking to him, a 'wage slave' working 996, especially since Ling Jing was already a small-time streamer earning hundreds of thousands a month by then.
At the university gate, two neatly dressed girls stood waiting under the shade of a tree, a light sheen of sweat on their foreheads.
"We've been waiting for half an hour. Why isn't he here yet?"
Ling Jing stamped her foot, her tone tinged with impatience.
Nalan Ruoshui, standing beside her, tugged at her sleeve and said softly:
"Jing Jing, he's coming to pick you up out of kindness. Don't complain."
"What kindness? He's clearly sent by my mom to spy on me!"
Ling Jing pouted.
"I told my family I was going to work at a phone store, but I actually want to be a streamer. How dare I let him know?"
Nalan Ruoshui frowned:
"I still want to find a job at a mall. Streaming is too unstable. What if no one watches? You won't earn a single penny."
Her family circumstances weren't good. She just wanted to earn some reliable money during the summer. She had come with Ling Jing because Ling Jing said there was free accommodation, so she wouldn't have to rent expensive housing in Modu, and it would be safe.
"Don't worry, I'll handle the living arrangements!"
Ling Jing patted her chest, though she wasn't confident inside.
She really didn't want to 'cohabitate' with a strange man, especially since Chen Mo had only graduated a little over a year ago. At most, he could rent a single room. Where would she find the independent space she needed for streaming?
When the time came, she'd just make up some excuse about the environment being bad and rent a small place herself. A few rolls of wallpaper would do the trick.
Just as they were talking, a black Rolls-Royce Cullinan pulled up steadily in front of them. The car's body was solid and imposing, clearly worth a fortune at first glance.
"Which boss is here to pick up his little mistress now?"
Ling Jing snorted lightly, her face full of disdain.
At the gate of an art university, this kind of thing was all too common during summer vacation. She had encountered it before and always refused outright.
She liked capable, self-made rich men, not playboy heirs living off their families.
But when the car door opened and the man who stepped out came into view, her eyes lit up.
Tall with long legs, handsome features, and a steady demeanor—he was nothing like the flashy rich second-generation she had imagined.
"So handsome..."
Ling Jing thought to herself, then sighed inwardly.
"What a pity. No matter how handsome, he's still a useless playboy."
She had already prepared how to refuse. If absolutely necessary, she could introduce Nalan Ruoshui to him, which might also spare her friend some hardship from menial work.
Unexpectedly, the man walked straight up to her and said:
"You must be Jing Jing, right? I'm Chen Mo. Auntie Zhang asked me to pick you up."
Ling Jing froze on the spot, her eyes wide:
"You're Cousin Chen Mo?"
Didn't they say Chen Mo was from an ordinary family, just 'doing okay' in Modu?
This brand-new Rolls-Royce Cullinan worth six or seven million—that's called 'doing okay'?
The best car in her hometown city was only on this level!
"If you don't believe me, you can call Auntie Zhang to confirm."
Chen Mo's tone was flat, his gaze at Ling Jing showing little emotion.
Their connection in his previous life hadn't been deep, and in this life, he had no particular feelings towards this 'sworn sister.' He was just fulfilling a promise to pick her up.
Ling Jing quickly took out her phone and dialed her mom's number.
After hanging up, her cheeks flushed red, and she said awkwardly:
"Sorry, Cousin Chen Mo, I didn't expect..."
Her mom had said on the phone that Chen Mo was doing exceptionally well. Not only did he drive a luxury car, but he had also bought his dad an Audi Q7 worth a million back home and owned several properties in the best residential areas in the city—all earned by himself!
This wasn't 'doing okay'—this was a super boss!
Chen Mo didn't mind her embarrassment and looked at Nalan Ruoshui beside her:
"And this is?"
"She's my classmate, Nalan Ruoshui. She's with me!"
Ling Jing said First, afraid Nalan Ruoshui would feel too awkward to accept the favor.
Sure enough, Nalan Ruoshui looked hesitant:
"I... wouldn't that be too much trouble for you?"
"No trouble. The place I live is big, and it's empty anyway. You two can Just right help house-sit for me, keep thieves away."
As he spoke, Chen Mo had already picked up their luggage and placed it in the trunk.
He had originally planned to arrange accommodation for them elsewhere, but on second thought, since he had promised Auntie Zhang to look after them, keeping them under his watch would be more reassuring. Besides, with Nalan Ruoshui around, Ling Jing probably wouldn't bother him too much.
Nalan Ruoshui couldn't refuse and had to follow Ling Jing into the car.
Half an hour later, the car entered the Tomson Riviera residential complex and stopped at the foot of a high-rise building.
Following Chen Mo into the elevator and watching him press the button for the top floor, Ling Jing and Nalan Ruoshui grew increasingly apprehensive.
When the elevator doors opened, a luxurious duplex villa came into view.
A high-ceilinged living room, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Huangpu River, Simple and elegant decoration, furniture that looked expensive at a glance, a crystal chandelier refracting dazzling light, and a living room so spacious you could play basketball in it.
The two girls were completely stunned, standing motionless at the doorway, their luggage nearly dropping from their hands.
"Except for the third floor where I stay, you can pick any room on the other floors. I'm sometimes not here, so you living here can help keep an eye on the place!"
Chen Mo handed the keys to Ling Jing.
"Feel free to use anything in the house. There's food and drinks in the fridge. Make yourselves at home."
With that, he turned and headed towards the third floor, leaving the two of them standing dazed in the living room.
Only after Chen Mo's figure disappeared did Nalan Ruoshui tug at Ling Jing:
"Jing Jing, didn't you say you were going to find an excuse to move somewhere else?"
This environment was better than anything she had ever dared to dream of. Forget paying rent, she couldn't even afford the property fees here!
Ling Jing rolled her eyes:
"Are you stupid? With an environment this good, if I said it was bad, wouldn't that be an obvious excuse?"
Her heart was already overflowing with joy. Such a spacious and Luxury house was practically tailor-made for her streaming career!
A private room, a Live Stream Background—she had it all, and without spending a single cent.
"But I..."
Nalan Ruoshui was still uneasy. She didn't want to live here for free.
"No 'buts'!"
Ling Jing pulled her towards the second floor.
"Cousin Chen Mo already said we're helping him house-sit. The furnish here is so expensive; if anything gets stolen, his loss would be huge. Us living here is actually helping him!"
She didn't hide her thoughts at all. After all, Chen Mo didn't seem like a stingy person. Why not make use of what's offered?
Nalan Ruoshui couldn't argue with her and I had no choice followed her to pick rooms.
On the third floor, Chen Mo leaned by the window, hearing the conversation downstairs. A faint smile curled at the corner of his mouth.
Ling Jing's personality was still the same as in his previous life—calculating yet principled, knowing what she wanted and daring to go after it.
In his previous life, her ability to thrive in the streaming circle relied precisely on this shrewdness and sense of Sense of proportion.
But in this life, he was no longer that wage slave at others' mercy.
As for Ling Jing wanting to be a streamer— Just right. Tianxing Live was short of quality streamers. If she really had the talent, he could indeed give her an opportunity.
