139: Chapter 139 Sneak In

The recruitment at the sixth school ended with only one young girl possessing low-grade wizard aptitude.

Thinking about the eight remaining schools to test, Nie Ning felt a massive headache coming on.

Even in a gacha game, after tens of thousands of draws, you'd expect at least two pity drops. Could it be that simply having wizard aptitude counts as the pity prize?

Nie Ning felt quite helpless and was no longer in the mood to continue the testing.

After all, with eight schools left, it would take a whole week to finish testing them all, and he couldn't wait any longer.

If he had that kind of time, he might as well spend it increasing his strength.

After handing this mess over to Lida, Nie Ning quietly left the school.

But Nie Ning hadn't been flying for long when a sensation of being watched inexplicably surfaced.

This feeling of being observed felt somewhat familiar; it seemed to have happened a few times recently.

Nie Ning's brow twitched slightly: 'Could I have been targeted by someone?'

Strangely, he didn't sense any malice. Who would be so bored as to observe him like this?

'Perhaps... it's someone with a secret crush on me?'

Nie Ning thought narcissistically.

That's how it is when you're too outstanding; there's no way to hide the dazzling light you radiate.

After a moment's thought, Nie Ning decided to wait and see, scanning the streets below as he flew, hoping to find someone suspicious.

Suddenly, a reflection from a building's window caught Nie Ning's attention.

When Nie Ning's Spiritual Power swept over it, he surprisingly couldn't check the situation inside the building, as if it were blocked by some kind of power.

As his eyes turned amber, the reflection on the window was filtered out, and he could faintly see a figure standing by the window.

Nie Ning frowned slightly but didn't immediately go forward to investigate.

Then, a wisp of white smoke drifted out from his body, flying toward a shop near the building.

Once the white smoke merged into the ground, Nie Ning didn't linger and returned directly to Hervais Manor.

...

When Nie Ning returned to the garden, Lilith was there alone planting flowers.

Lilith had already been depressed because of the Bunir matter, and the recent death of so many classmates had made her already poor mental state even worse.

She would often curl up in her bedroom alone or use gardening to numb herself.

Nie Ning didn't know how to handle this either; after all, he wasn't very good at comforting people, though he was quite skilled at killing them.

Unfortunately, Lilith had no enemies, so there was basically no opportunity for him to use those skills.

Nie Ning walked up to Lilith and used sign language to indicate that he would take over.

Seeing this, Lilith nodded with a numb expression and then sat on a small stool, blankly watching Nie Ning's busy figure.

"Lately, I always feel like Norma is hiding something from me. She often sneaks out, and I have a feeling she's about to leave this place."

"There's been no news from Bunir lately either. I don't know how he is now or if he's encountered any danger."

"I don't know who that person who always wears a mask is. There's clearly a very familiar feeling, yet when he kills people, it's so terrifying and truly cruel..."

"Do you think family or love is more important? I'm so reluctant to leave my father and mother. Perhaps that masked man was right, Bunir really doesn't like me, it's just..."

"If only you could speak..."

Lilith began talking to herself behind Nie Ning.

Like a child with a hundred thousand 'whys,' her voice was filled with confusion and worry about the future.

Nie Ning sighed inwardly.

He didn't know how to respond, so he could only be a quiet listener.

...

Night fell.

Under the cover of darkness, Nie Ning arrived near the building he had encountered during the day.

Scanning the building with his eyes, he saw it was a concrete structure with no lights inside; it looked like an office building.

Walking into the alley behind the building, Nie Ning glanced at the padlock on the door, casually ripped it off, and then slipped inside.

The building was exceptionally quiet, without even a single security guard.

Nie Ning headed up the stairs.

But he had only climbed two floors when the 'tap-tap-tap' of footsteps came from above.

Sensing someone approaching, Nie Ning looked at the door leading to the third floor, held his breath, and tiptoed inside.

The third floor was much as Nie Ning had expected.

It was filled with many desks, chairs, typewriters, and other equipment, looking like a normal office environment.

Listening to the footsteps outside the door, Nie Ning casually picked up a document from a desk and glanced at it.

'Blank paper?'

There was no writing in the folder.

Nie Ning picked up documents from other desks to check.

Most of them had no writing, and the occasional words that did appear were a jumbled mess, like random scribbles.

Seeing this, Nie Ning frowned slightly.

A startup company?

But even for a startup, why leave so many blank documents on the desks?

Could it be some kind of disguised underworld den?

Thinking about it, it didn't seem impossible.

For those bold enough, there was no trade they wouldn't dare to enter as long as it made money.

Could the people watching him be this bunch?

But why watch him? He was so poor he was practically ready to walk the streets; if they wanted to get money out of him, he'd actually have to have some first.

Furthermore, he flew quite high; to ordinary people, he was probably just a small black dot. The sensation of being watched during the day definitely didn't come from an ordinary person's gaze.

While Nie Ning was lost in thought, he suddenly heard someone stop at the entrance to the third-floor staircase.

Nie Ning looked at the floor; a sliver of light seeped in from the crack under the door.

Seeing that the other party intended to enter, Nie Ning quickly hid under an office desk.

Then the door slowly opened, and the 'tap-tap-tap' of footsteps entered Nie Ning's ears, accompanied by the swaying light of an oil lamp.

Sensing the other party approaching, Nie Ning held his breath and suppressed his aura.

Just as the footsteps neared Nie Ning, they suddenly paused for a moment, and then the sound began to slowly recede, as if the person were leaving.

Nie Ning breathed a sigh of relief, but then his mind filled with questions.

He was currently the strongest person in Ska City, yet here he was acting like a common thief. Was this right?

Besides, Nie Ning always felt this building was strange. After all, what kind of office building specifically isolates Spiritual Power?

He wondered how much money one would have to earn to offset the cost of constructing such a building.

It seemed he should borrow some people from the City Lord's Mansion tomorrow. Perhaps this really was an underworld den; he could wipe them all out in one go then.

Seeing the lamplight getting further away, Nie Ning prepared to crawl out from under the desk to check the floors above.

But just as Nie Ning poked half his head out, a human head suddenly appeared above him, staring straight at him with wide eyes.

At this sight, Nie Ning's soul was nearly scared out of his body, and he threw a backhand punch.

Under Nie Ning's powerful force, the other party was punched directly into the fourth floor.

Now it was Nie Ning's turn to be stunned.

He didn't even know who the other person was yet; surely that punch hadn't killed them.

Moreover, he had snuck in. If this was all just his wild guessing, accidentally killing someone wouldn't be a good thing for him.
