94: Chapter 94 New Case

"It's that kid with the strong professional skills I was telling you about."

Borton sighed and then began to recount the recent events.

The new addition to the agency was named Dulu Ferdinand, a handsome young man.

He was exceptionally capable in reasoning and finding clues; even the number of clients coming for help had increased, significantly boosting the agency's performance and income.

In a society where individuals are very pragmatic, this kind of person easily attracts the attention of the opposite sex.

Compared to finding a Transcendent partner, many people would rather find a handsome and capable person like him.

Furthermore, some people have had so much contact with Transcendents that they've developed a sort of immunity; they are no longer attracted to them and prefer ordinary people with outstanding abilities.

In short, Marina has fallen for someone else.

After listening to Borton's story, Nie Ning's lips couldn't help but twitch slightly.

It wasn't that he cared about who had fallen for whom.

Besides, he wasn't bad-looking himself, so why hadn't she fallen for him instead?

Of course, he was a man of integrity; even if she did like him, it wouldn't work out!

However, regarding Marina choosing an ordinary person, Borton clearly favored his own student more.

Nie Ning hesitated for a long while, not knowing what to say. After all, he really had no authority on the subject. Eventually, he only managed two words: "My condolences."

Borton rolled his eyes. "If you don't know how to speak, then don't."

"These things can only be left to them. They're still young; maybe they'll reconcile soon," Nie Ning said with a smile, leaning back in his chair.

"Forget it. One look at you and I can tell you've never been in a relationship. Talking to you is a waste of breath."

Borton delivered a direct verbal blow, catching Nie Ning off Guard.

Nie Ning curled his lip.

"Look at what you're saying. Rather than finding someone you love, it's better to find someone who loves you. You're decades old; don't you understand this simple truth?"

"I can't be bothered with you. A single dog has no right to say such things."

The two of them then engaged in a bout of verbal sparring.

...

Gradually, the two grew tired of arguing.

"It just so happens there's a case recently that you might be interested in."

Borton took a file from the drawer and tossed it in front of Nie Ning.

Nie Ning curiously opened the file, and what met his eyes was a photograph printed with a red magic circle.

Looking at the photo, Nie Ning felt a strange sense of familiarity. "This is..."

"You guessed right. This magic circle is the same as the one found in Mrs. Terry's case."

Borton said with a sigh.

Hearing this, Nie Ning's expression turned solemn.

The last case had involved a Corruptor, which was a very serious matter.

Especially from the books Audrey collected, it could be seen that the harm caused by Corruptors multiplies exponentially. One wrong move and the entire city could be shrouded in the shadow of a Corruptor.

Of course, Corruptors are not born that easily.

Being affected by corruption doesn't necessarily make one a Corruptor; many are merely Corrupted Puppets.

True Corruptors are the types Nie Ning had encountered, possessing relatively special abilities.

The most bizarre among them was the Coffin Nail Old Man. The abilities or tools he mastered were completely irrational; once hit, it wouldn't matter if one's strength was several times greater.

Nie Ning continued to flip through the pages. It not only recorded Mrs. Terry's case but also several similar ones that followed.

After an investigation, the Guard Hall discovered that all those homes had bizarre magic circles; clearly, someone was pulling strings behind the scenes.

"What about the flower shop owner from last time?"

Nie Ning remembered the culprit from Mrs. Terry's case.

"Dead. Died in prison. The Guards said it was suicide."

Borton sighed.

He had looked into it afterward; that person was a completely ordinary human.

Setting aside whether he could set up such a mysterious magic circle, how he came into contact with it was the biggest question.

The Guard Hall hadn't yet learned how the magic circle was obtained before the flower shop owner committed suicide in prison. It would be strange if there wasn't something fishy going on.

In subsequent cases, the suspects were basically dead before they could even be caught.

Currently, the Guard Hall has made no progress on the matter, which is why they sent the case back to the city's detective agencies.

"Did the Guard Hall find a vibrant red flower at the scene?"

Nie Ning asked again.

If that thing was still around, then this matter would be huge.

If it were like the Little Boy, it would be fine; with his current abilities, it wouldn't be hard to deal with.

The fear was of those corrupted things that vanished without a trace to hide somewhere; if they were to grow, the consequences would be unimaginable.

Borton shook his head. "I don't know. Who would pay attention to something like that?"

"Remember that bizarre incident I encountered last time? It appeared in Mrs. Terry's case too. The problem is much more serious than you think."

Nie Ning said somewhat helplessly.

This matter was no longer something Borton could handle.

Thinking about it now, taking over Audrey's job really wasn't a task for a normal person.

The danger posed by Corruptors far exceeds that of ordinary harmful incidents.

Even now, without finding the weakness of the Coffin Nail Old Man, he had no chance of winning against that monstrous thing.

If a similar Corruptor appeared in this case, it would literally be a life-or-death gamble.

"Then let's forget it."

Hearing this, Borton reached out to take the file back from Nie Ning's hand.

Nie Ning had almost died last time; Borton wasn't the kind of person to send others to their deaths for a bit of fame and money.

"It's too late. Soon I'll be taking over someone else's job, and I'll be specifically responsible for handling similar bizarre incidents in the future."

Nie Ning shook his head slightly.

He might not have time to take cases at the agency in the future, so it was better to say it directly to avoid any misunderstanding from Borton.

Borton stood up in excitement upon hearing this.

"How can you do something so dangerous? When the sky falls, the tall ones should hold it up. I think you'd be better off staying peacefully at the agency; at least you can choose what you want to do."

"Soon, I will be the tallest person in Ska City. If I don't do these things, none of you will have it easy."

Nie Ning shrugged.

Once Audrey left, he estimated he would be the strongest person here.

"What do you mean? Are you going to take over the position of City Lord?"

Borton was somewhat confused, but a flash of pleasant surprise crossed his eyes.

He had absolute faith in Nie Ning's abilities.

If Nie Ning became the City Lord, then why bother with an agency? It would be better for everyone to become civil servants together; they might even squeeze into high society soon.

"What are you thinking? I'm talking about strength."

Nie Ning rolled his eyes and spoke irritably.

Compared to the position of City Lord, he would rather deal with Corruptors.

Because City Lord was not a leisure post; there were many things to handle every day, which would seriously delay his cultivation time, and that was not something he wanted to see.

Knowing about things like Corruptors, becoming stronger was his only way out.
