944: Leave it to luck

Inside a room deep within the City Lord's Mansion.

Ogre saw the expressions on his subordinates' faces and felt no surprise.

He knew very well that none of these guys wanted to be chosen.

If he had a choice, he wouldn't want to leave the city with Kahn either.

But, there was no other way!

"Before we regain control of the Guardian Array, we must cooperate with Kahn."

"Let's draw lots. Leave everything to luck. Whoever draws will come out of the city with Kahn and me."

Ogre said in a calm tone.

He knew that if he designated someone now, the chosen person would definitely be unhappy. To avoid any unexpected incidents later, he could only resort to drawing lots.

After speaking, Ogre casually took out a handful of wooden sticks, twelve in total, six long and six short.

"I will open my Dark World and throw these wooden sticks into it. Those who draw long sticks will stay in the city, and those who draw short sticks will come out of the city with Kahn and me."

As he spoke, Kahn motioned for his subordinates to come forward and draw lots.

However, just then, the outside suddenly became chaotic, and then the room door was knocked. The urgent voice of a City Lord's Mansion guard rang out:

"Lord City Lord, Sand Dune Town has sent a distress call, saying they are under attack by a Human Race Strong."

"What?"

Before Ogre could respond, a Ninth-Order Undead roared angrily:

"Damn Human Race dares to attack our gathering place? Are they tired of living?!"

Since the signing of the peace treaty, the Human Race and the Dead Spirit Race had ceased hostilities. Although occasional skirmishes occurred, they usually took place in remote areas. Attacking a gathering place had never happened before the destruction of various Dead Spirit gathering places in the Demon Beast Forest.

The many Dead Spirit Race Strong present couldn't even imagine which Human Race had such audacity.

"According to the Sand Dune Town Master, the Human Race attacking Sand Dune Town is extremely powerful, likely a Ninth-Order True Lord of the Human Race. Sand Dune Town's Guardian Array won't last much longer. Please make a decision soon, my lords."

The guard who delivered the message knelt on the ground after entering the room, speaking urgently.

"A Human True Lord?"

Ogre and the other Ninth-Order Undead all looked solemn upon hearing this.

They had initially thought that the Human Race Cultivator attacking Sand Dune Town was someone whose brain had gone bad from Cultivating.

After all, given the hatred between the two races, even though a peace treaty had been signed, there were always some hot-headed individuals who would do something as crazy as attacking Dead Spirits. But these were generally ordinary Human Race Cultivators.

Now, the one who made a move was actually a Human True Lord?

Those who could Cultivate to Ninth-Order were not fools; they would never attack Sand Dune Town without reason.

Moreover, they were just discussing Kahn's plan to kill Wang Chen. Now, suddenly, there was news that a subordinate gathering place was being attacked by a Human True Lord. This was too much of a coincidence!

"There must be something fishy about this."

Ogre mused for a moment before saying:

"A Human True Lord would not attack our gathering place without reason. There's probably a reason we don't know about."

As he spoke, he stood up and paced back and forth in the room.

"Lord City Lord, I think it's best to report this matter to Kahn quickly. After all, he is currently in charge of everything in the city, and any response should be ordered by him."

A Ninth-Order Undead suggested to Ogre, and before his voice faded, his companions around him agreed.

"In that case... very well."

Ogre nodded upon hearing this.

If Kahn made the response and issued the orders, then he should bear the consequences and losses incurred. After all, he didn't even have control of the Guardian Array now. If something went wrong, the Holy City wouldn't hold him accountable.

However...

"The situation in Sand Dune Town is already very critical. We cannot ignore it. Their Guardian Array was built to defend against a Peak Eighth-Order, so it won't last long against a Human True Lord."

"It will definitely take time for us to go and discuss with Kahn. Before that, we must send people to support them."

Ogre said, his gaze sweeping over his subordinates below, and he quickly had candidates in mind.

"Rondo, you take Sosis to support Sand Dune Town. The fact that Sand Dune Town could send a distress signal means that Human True Lord has not yet broken the Guardian Array's defensive barrier. His strength is at most Early Stage Ninth-Order. With your Middle Stage Ninth-Order strength and Sosis's Early Stage Ninth-Order strength, you can completely deal with him."

Ogre pointed among his subordinates, and immediately two tall Ninth-Order Undead stepped forward.

"Remember, your mission is to resolve the crisis in Sand Dune Town, not to kill that Human True Lord. Just drive him away."

Ogre further instructed.

"As Lord City Lord commands."

Rondo and Sosis cupped their hands in obedience, then turned and left the room, flying in the direction of Sand Dune Town.

After Rondo and Sosis left, Ogre also got up and left the room, taking his remaining subordinates to visit Kahn.

...

...

When Canglan City stirred, in the Dead Spirit gathering place of Sand Dune Town, Wang Chen was calmly sitting on a chair, looking indifferently at the many Dead Spirits gathered before him, their expressions incredibly tense.

The total population of this Dead Spirit gathering place, Sand Dune Town, exceeded eight thousand. Although many had been killed by Wang Chen earlier, those gathered now still looked like a vast, dense crowd.

Among these Dead Spirits, ordinary Dead Spirits accounted for the largest proportion, nearly six thousand. The remaining two thousand or so were Dead Spirits with Cultivation.

However, among them, only about a hundred had noticeable strength, possessing strength above Sixth-Order. The rest were generally around First, Second, or Third-Order.

As for the strongest combat power in Sand Dune Town, there were three Dead Spirits who had reached Eighth-Order: one was the previous White-haired Necromancer, who was the Sand Dune Town Master and had Peak Eighth-Order strength; the other two were the main and vice leaders of the hunting team, both Late Stage Eighth-Order.

At this moment.

Wang Chen sat on the chair, while these three strongest individuals in Sand Dune Town stood obediently beside him. Although there was killing intent and anger in their eyes, they all kept their heads bowed, not daring to show it.

There was no other way; they had considered resisting. The Town Master had even activated the Guardian Array, hoping to use the array to suppress and kill Wang Chen. But Wang Chen had casually shattered the Guardian Array's defensive barrier with a single punch, and in doing so, also shattered the will to resist in the hearts of these Dead Spirits.

"Respected Human Race Strong, I have already sent a distress signal to Canglan City as you commanded. May I ask if you can now let my clansmen leave?"

The Sand Dune Town Master, the White-haired Necromancer, couldn't stand the current silence. He suppressed his fear and bowed, asking Wang Chen.

Although he didn't know why the Human Race Strong before him made such a strange request, a major battle was definitely about to break out.

If his clansmen remained here, they might be torn to shreds by the aftermath of the battle.
