22: Quiet laboratory
After parting ways with the six students, Qin Shilei and Zhang Xiaoli continued towards the laboratory.
Because the zombie outbreak happened right at lunchtime, there weren't many zombies in the teaching building area.
The few scattered ones were easily dealt with by the two of them.
"That building ahead is the experiment building, and the generator is at the very end of the first floor," Zhang Xiaoli said, pointing to a five-story building to the east.
Just then, a male student walked out of a classroom to their right.
Upon seeing Qin Shilei, the person immediately raised his blade in caution, his eyes darting back and forth as if searching for an escape route.
"Senior Brother Zhong, what a coincidence!" Zhang Xiaoli waved, greeting him.
"Is this your classmate?" Qin Shilei turned his head and asked.
"We met by chance. He's in Taekwondo, and he's quite skilled," Zhang Xiaoli replied, blushing.
Actually, Zhong Renhe had pursued her before, and she had almost agreed. But later, she found out he was a bit of a playboy, so nothing came of it.
Zhong Renhe saw that Qin Shilei seemed not to recognize him, so he put down his blade and asked with a smile, "Zhang Xiaoli, is the person next to you your boyfriend?"
"Qin Shilei, my benefactor."
"Zhong Renhe."
Zhang Xiaoli introduced the two.
"Hello," Qin Shilei greeted him casually.
"Hello, it seems you're the one who killed the Giant Zombie, aren't you?" Zhong Renhe feigned just recognizing Qin Shilei and asked.
"Just luck," Qin Shilei responded modestly.
"Where are you two going?" Zhong Renhe slowly walked forward.
"We're going to find the generator." Zhang Xiaoli hesitated for a moment, then, seeing no reaction from Qin Shilei, she honestly stated their destination.
"What a coincidence, my teammate's drone also ran out of power. I was just about to go look for a generator too. How about we go together? We can look out for each other."
Zhong Renhe acted as if it were a great coincidence, then casually suggested teaming up.
Zhang Xiaoli turned to look at Qin Shilei beside her, signaling him to make the decision.
Qin Shilei frowned, but finally nodded and replied, "Alright, let's go then."
Although he was somewhat suspicious of the other person's 'coincidence,' there was only one path from here to the experiment building, so it was hard to ask him to take a detour.
Seeing Qin Shilei agree, Zhong Renhe smiled and leaned closer to Zhang Xiaoli, asking her about her well-being with feigned concern.
It was as if he had returned to the days when he used to pursue Zhang Xiaoli.
"So he only wanted to pursue Zhang Xiaoli, after all."
Qin Shilei felt he understood the other person's intentions and no longer paid him much attention.
Only then did Zhong Renhe's tense nerves finally relax.
Because of an uneven distribution of spoils, he had already left Liu Yuanliang's team this morning.
Thinking there was also a convenience store on the teaching building side, he had come here alone.
He had also happened to see the video of Qin Shilei shooting down more than ten people within five seconds.
Not only could he kill the Giant Zombie, but he also showed no mercy when killing his own kind.
Towards such a ruthless person, Zhong Renhe was truly afraid that he would strike him down in an instant.
For now, it seemed the other person didn't know that he was once a member of Liu Yuanliang's group.
The three quickly entered the experiment building.
A long corridor with various laboratories on both sides.
Because the lighting wasn't good enough and the electric lights were out, the corridor was somewhat dim.
"Don't you think it's too quiet here?" Zhang Xiaoli looked around uneasily.
"Classes had just ended then, so it's normal for there to be few people here," Zhong Renhe explained.
"Everyone, be careful," Qin Shilei tightened his grip on the Seven Star Sword and reminded them.
Occasionally, some dried bloodstains were found on the corridor, but not a single corpse was seen.
The doors of the laboratories on both sides were all tightly shut, and it was unknown whether there were zombies inside.
"Creak!"
In the silent environment, a door suddenly opened behind them.
"Who?"
Zhong Renhe immediately turned around and demanded.
Qin Shilei also turned and came to the door on the right.
Thump thump!
Standing beside the door, he reached out and knocked on it.
There was no reaction at all.
With a casual push, the door opened inwards.
He glanced roughly inside; it was a biology lab, and apart from some equipment, no zombies or humans were found inside.
"Never mind that, let's quickly go to the generator room, grab the generator, and leave."
Qin Shilei casually closed the door again and turned to continue walking forward.
"Let's hurry up, it's so quiet here, I always feel a chill."
Zhang Xiaoli urged everyone to quicken their pace.
The group quickly arrived in front of the generator room at the end of the corridor.
"Do you hear a rustling sound?" Qin Shilei suddenly asked.
"Ah! Mice!"
Zhang Xiaoli instantly jumped onto Qin Shilei, screaming in panic.
Qin Shilei turned to look and saw twenty to thirty white mice scurrying from behind them.
"These should be lab mice, don't be afraid."
Qin Shilei patted Zhang Xiaoli, hoping she would get down.
"I'm afraid of all mice."
Zhang Xiaoli hugged Qin Shilei tightly, refusing to get down no matter what.
"No, these white mice wouldn't be zombie mice, would they? Look, there's no blood flowing from the wounds on their bodies."
Zhong Renhe pointed at the wounds on the white mice and said.
"Whether they're living white mice or zombie mice, can they block my Seven Star Sword?"
Qin Shilei prepared to go forward and kill all the white mice.
However, Zhang Xiaoli on his back was a bit of a problem.
"Bang!"
Just then, the experiment building's main door was suddenly pushed open from the outside.
Then a large group of zombies rushed in.
"Let's go into the generator room first."
Qin Shilei turned to open the door, intending to hide inside.
He twisted the doorknob, but it didn't budge.
At this moment, the group of zombie mice had already reached ten meters away, and the zombies were not far behind the zombie mice.
"Zhang Xiaoli, get down. I'll kick the door open," Qin Shilei said sternly, his face grim.
"I'm not afraid, they're just zombies, just zombies," Zhang Xiaoli muttered, her voice trembling, and she loosened her grip, dropping from Qin Shilei's body.
"Boom, boom, boom."
With three consecutive kicks, the thick iron door finally broke open.
Zhong Renhe entered the generator room first.
Qin Shilei turned and pulled Zhang Xiaoli, who was still bravely facing the white mice, and with a flash, he also rushed into the generator room.
"Why did so many zombies suddenly appear?" Zhong Renhe asked, still shaken.
Before they entered, zombies were still continuously pouring in from outside the main door. There were at least a hundred zombies, and who knew how many more were outside.
"These zombies are so strange. It's like they were waiting for us to enter here before appearing. Could they also understand strategy?" Zhang Xiaoli finally recovered from her fear of the white mice and asked in surprise.
"Quick, find something to prop against the door!" Qin Shilei turned and shouted at Zhong Renhe.
What an unobservant fellow, the door lock is broken, and you don't even think of propping something against the door.
Qin Shilei turned to look, but was dumbfounded.
The entire generator room, twenty to thirty square meters, contained nothing but a machine the size of a van.
Where was the promised generator?
