57: Breakout 3
Tang Haotian gritted his teeth, turned, and walked back towards Ningan City.
As he passed the pickup truck An Qian and her group were driving, his steps suddenly paused, and an arrow immediately grazed past him and embedded itself halfway into the ground.
He turned his head to see Qin Shilei in the distance, once again drawing his bowstring taut, while the soldiers aimed their guns at him in unison.
“Thank you, Officer, for intervening,” Qin Shilei said, thanking the officer in front of him.
“If it weren't for the need to open up the breakthrough path sooner, I would never have stopped you from killing him,” the officer said with a wry smile.
Once Qin Shilei and the Apocalypse Home people engaged in a major battle, it would not only result in the loss of a powerful expert but also potentially injure surrounding personnel and slow down the breakthrough.
A civil war at this time might affect everyone's morale for the breakthrough. If everyone then scrambled to escape, causing chaos, the breakthrough could be hindered.
Qin Shilei smiled and returned to the top of the bulldozer.
An hour later, the Tank finally crossed the Beibuwan Bridge over the Gan River.
The zombies on this side of the bridge had become sparse, and the soldiers behind immediately moved forward to clear them out.
Soon, all the scattered zombies were killed.
This also meant that the breakthrough path had been opened.
As long as Qin Shilei and his group were willing, they could immediately leave this city, which was heavily surrounded by zombies, and Zhang Xiaoli could continue her journey home.
They were completely safe.
“Mr. Qin, please lend us a hand and help us defend the passage.”
The military officer from before walked up to Qin Shilei again, saluted, and pleaded.
Qin Shilei frowned, preparing to refuse.
Several Evolutionaries ahead of them had already done so and driven away.
“It will take at least two to three hours for all the civilians to pass through the breakthrough passage. If Mutated Zombies appear again, there will likely be heavy casualties. I hope Mr. Qin can show some dedication.”
The officer's eyes held deep hope.
Looking at the officer in front of him, Qin Shilei's mind suddenly flashed back to the countless soldiers who were overwhelmed by zombies while defending the front lines during their breakthrough, and he thought of those soldiers who, even in death, pulled the pin on the bombs at their waists to perish with the zombies.
Although this was not his world, they all had the same skin color, similar cultural customs, and the same group of respectable soldiers.
“Alright, I promise you. It's not for those civilians, but for you, this group of respectable soldiers.”
Meeting the officer's hopeful eyes, Qin Shilei nodded and replied.
“Qin Shilei!” An Qian and the others simultaneously called out Qin Shilei's name with worry.
“It’s alright, I'll be fine.”
Qin Shilei turned to them and said, “You all leave first and wait for me in the next small town. Let Xiaoqiang follow you so he can guide me later.”
After speaking, he released Xiaoqiang.
“Whoosh!”
As soon as Xiaoqiang came out, he spread his wings and flew into the sky, circling several times.
He had been really bored staying in the pet space.
His injuries had greatly improved after Zhang Xiaoli's treatment, making him barely able to be ridden.
But Xiaoqiang not only had injuries but was also pregnant.
To avoid harming Xiaoqiang's fetus, Qin Shilei did not immediately choose to have Xiaoqiang carry everyone away when the zombies first besieged the city.
An Qian looked at Xiaoqiang, who had landed beside them again, and suggested, “Then let Xiaoqiang stay with you. If there's an emergency, you can still ride him away.”
Qin Shilei nodded and replied, “Let him fly back and forth. Anyway, his stamina is better.”
After An Qian and her group left with the rocket launcher, Qin Shilei returned to the center of the three-thousand-meter breakthrough passage.
Standing on the roof of the tallest truck, holding a short bow, his eyes scanned the passage back and forth.
The short bow in his hand was constantly being drawn and fired.
Zombies that entered the passage through various means were accurately shot down by Qin Shilei's precise arrows.
From the breakthrough until now, he didn't know how many arrows he had shot; the ten thousand arrows in his spatial ring were nearly half gone.
Fortunately, when he advanced to the Bronze Realm, he gained an additional attribute of being full of energy; otherwise, he might not have had the energy to continue pulling the bowstring.
Vehicles, either full of people or supplies, were continuously passing through the passage at a speed of fifty to sixty kilometers per hour.
“Beep!” A sharp horn sounded about five or six hundred meters behind.
Qin Shilei stomped hard on the truck roof and rapidly dashed towards the sound of the horn.
As he approached, he found that the area had become chaotic.
Countless zombies had stacked themselves into a wall outside the trucks, forming a ramp nearly ten meters wide. Countless zombies were continuously climbing onto the trucks via the ramp and then jumping into the passage.
Two very fast zombies, as soon as they entered the passage, jumped into the trucks.
They not only killed the people inside but also caused the trucks to lose control and crash into the side vehicle wall, forcing a string of trucks behind them to stop.
The surrounding soldiers immediately turned their guns and began sweeping fire at the two Mutated Zombies.
However, the two zombies were too fast and specifically burrowed into the stopped trucks. The soldiers, unable to focus their fire, simply couldn't kill them.
In less than two minutes since the Mutated Zombies appeared, they had killed three to four hundred people.
Even the armed soldiers had twenty to thirty casualties.
“Whoosh! Whoosh!”
As soon as he entered range, Qin Shilei drew his bow and shot arrows.
In less than five seconds, the two Mutated Zombies, which had been rampaging, lay on the ground, their heads riddled with arrows, unable to even let out a single scream.
“Boom! Boom! Boom!”
At this moment, soldiers also fired three rockets from shoulder-mounted rocket launchers at the zombie-stacked ramp outside the trucks, leveling it.
Qin Shilei, while shooting the zombies entering the passage, ran towards the two Mutated Zombies.
At this time, the Apocalypse Home group, led by Tang Haotian, also arrived nearby.
“Damn it, he beat us to it again,” Cuntou grumbled, stopping his steps.
“Let's go.” Tang Haotian, seeing that Qin Shilei had already taken the crystals, turned and left with a gloomy expression.
He completely ignored the zombies still in the passage.
“Boom, boom, boom!”
As Qin Shilei was slaughtering the zombies in the passage, several more shell explosions sounded in the distance.
Qin Shilei abandoned the ordinary zombies and quickly ran towards that spot.
He saw another zombie wall that had been stacked up was blown apart by the soldiers.
The force of the shell explosion nearly overturned a nearby truck.
“These zombies stacking corpse walls must be commanded by an intelligent Mutated Zombie. I must find it and kill it,” Qin Shilei thought to himself.
He looked out beyond the defense line.
In the dark environment, it was impossible to distinguish which zombie was a Mutated Zombie.
Qin Shilei slowed his pace and walked along the top of the trucks into the distance.
Suddenly, he noticed that not far ahead, zombies were once again stacking up a corpse wall.
He concentrated and listened.
“Roar!”
A distinct zombie roar occasionally came from the zombie horde.
“Found you.”
Qin Shilei pulled out a powerful flashlight, held it in his mouth, turned it on, and shone it there.
He saw that at that spot, one of the zombies, as the light shone on it, turned and fled into the distance.
