102: Chapter 102: Think about it after we break up.
On the way back, Xu Yu and Jiang Heng were still angry. "Those people are too shameless."
"Who can say otherwise? We've been in The Apocalypse for so long, and this is the first time I've encountered people like that."
"Oh, stop getting angry. You might never meet them again, so there's no need to be upset with them."
Xu Wanning silently absorbed the crystal nucleus. The Apocalypse had made everyone sensitive; who wouldn't want to become stronger? Becoming stronger meant being able to live a few more years.
After absorbing the crystal nucleus, the car was almost within the Safe Zone's perimeter.
"Sister Ning, look, it's Lin Ci!" Wen Shuyang suddenly pointed outside and shouted.
Xu Wanning looked in the direction she pointed, and it really was Lin Ci. "Stop the car."
The car came to a steady stop, and Xu Wanning quickly got out. "Lin Ci, why are you here?!"
Lin Ci, who was currently killing zombies, turned his head. His originally tense expression instantly softened. "I came to see you."
Xu Wanning didn't believe him. Came to see her? At a time like this?
Lin Ci walked over, opened his arms, and hugged her. "Long time no see."
Now, Lin Ci had shed the last trace of his youthfulness, and there was a very strong aura about him.
Xu Wanning gently pushed him away. "What are you actually here for?"
Lin Ci gave a self-deprecating laugh. "Sigh, I thought you would miss me, but you didn't have much of a reaction when you saw me. I'm such a failure."
Xu Wanning didn't speak, just stared at him.
Lin Ci immediately became serious. "Our city's leadership sent me to support Jing City. We've completely cleared out the zombies over there."
Xu Wanning was shocked. Didn't this round of Acid Rain just arrive? The zombies were actually cleared out? That's unscientific!
"Won't your zombies be replenished one by one as they die?" Xu Wanning could only think of this one possibility.
"They will," Lin Ci smiled. "We dug huge pits outside the city and threw all those zombies into them. As long as we don't kill them, the zombies won't be replenished. As for the mutated humans, killing them won't trigger a replenishment."
Xu Wanning and the others really hadn't noticed this. It wasn't that they weren't observant; it was just that the numbers were too overwhelming.
There were already fewer zombies in Lin Ci's city, so it was easier to spot the clues.
"How long can you stay?"
"One week."
The two stood by the car chatting, while everyone in the car stretched their necks to watch.
Especially Lu Chengyue. He knew Lin Ci liked Ningning and had previously considered him a dangerous object. He had been quite happy when Lin Ci left Jing City. Who would have thought he would come back again? He simply didn't believe that he wasn't here for Ningning.
"Are you still with that Lu Chengyue? Did you break up? If you did, consider me." Lin Ci glanced at Lu Chengyue, who was watching from the car window, and said with a mischievous smile.
Xu Wanning glared at him. "A-Yue and I won't break up. You, hurry up and find your destined person."
Lin Ci didn't show it on his face. Even though he had long known he had no chance, hearing Xu Wanning say it herself still made him feel a bit uncomfortable, but he wouldn't do anything drastic.
"Haven't met her yet. I'll deal with it when I do." He didn't have the idea of staying chaste for anyone. Xu Wanning didn't like him, and he couldn't stay a bachelor his whole life. If he met someone suitable, he would still date, or even marry.
It was just that he had been too busy killing zombies and seizing power these past two years to consider these matters.
"I'm now the Deputy Commander of our city. If you want to find me, just call this number." Lin Ci handed the business card from his pocket to Xu Wanning.
Xu Wanning held the card and smiled. "It actually looks quite official." Deputy Commander, impressive!
"However, I don't have a satellite phone, so I probably won't have many chances to call."
Currently, the entire country's communications relied on satellites to be complete. In the first year of The Apocalypse, all satellites stopped working, and no signals could be received. Various messages were conveyed by communications officers flying planes, which took a long time.
For some reason, in the last few days, the satellites actually had signals. As long as a mobile phone had satellite phone functionality, satellite communication could be achieved. However, to ensure smooth communication between top-level leaders, ordinary people couldn't switch to satellite phones for the time being.
The Great Leader had actually prepared one for Xu Wanning, but she had led a team out on a mission before it could be delivered, which is why she didn't know she was about to receive a satellite phone.
"Go get one later." Lin Ci only had one, so he couldn't give it to her.
"Yeah." Xu Wanning glanced at Lu Chengyue in the car. "We're heading back first."
Lin Ci nodded. "Yeah, once things are cleared up here, I'll see you in the Central District."
Xu Wanning left the address of the villa with him before getting into the car.
The car started moving again, and Lu Chengyue looked at Xu Wanning beside him, wanting to say something but hesitating.
Xu Wanning turned her head to look at him. "If you want to ask something, just ask."
"Why did he come to Jing City?" His tone was full of displeasure.
"He came to provide support. The zombies over there have been brought under control." Xu Wanning briefly explained the situation there.
Everyone couldn't help but give a thumbs up.
Jiang Heng sighed, "That method of theirs is good, but it only applies to places where there were few zombies to begin with. Like here, no matter how big a pit we dig, it's useless; the zombies would just trample over each other and climb out."
"Jing City has quite a lot of survivors. In such a huge city, only 4 million are left. Sigh." Xu Yu looked out the window, melancholic.
Currently, all survivors had been transferred to the Central District. It was only 4 million; the Central District could easily accommodate them. There was no one in the other districts for the time being, which was a good thing for survivor squads; they didn't need to worry about rescuing survivors.
Qin Qingru muttered, "When The Apocalypse ends, everyone will probably have to focus on making babies, otherwise humanity will still go extinct."
"I'm not giving birth." Wen Shuyang was the first to object. "Raising children is too difficult, and it has a big impact on a woman's body. I'll pass. Humanity certainly won't go extinct just because I don't have children."
After experiencing the passing of her father, Wen Shuyang had changed a lot. She was no longer as carefree as before. Even if she still made the same jokes as before, everyone could still feel the sadness inside her.
"I'm not giving birth either," Lu Zhiyu chimed in. "I haven't met anyone who could make me willing to have children, so I definitely won't."
Lu Chengyue looked at Xu Wanning but didn't ask. He really wanted children, but if Ningning didn't want them, then they wouldn't have any. After all, she was the one who would have to give birth.
Xu Wanning turned to look at him. "A-Yue, do you like children?"
"Yeah." Of course he liked them; he really loved the feeling of being relied on by a child.
"Then we'll have them." Xu Wanning didn't have the idea of never having children, but it had to happen naturally, and not right now.
If The Apocalypse never ended, she would never let a child be born. She didn't want her child to experience the cruel Apocalypse.
"A-Yue, let's have children after The Apocalypse ends." Xu Wanning held Lu Chengyue's hand.
"Okay." Lu Chengyue curled his lips into a smile. He didn't want a child born now either; if they were infected with the zombie virus, he would regret it to death.
It was just a hope; perhaps because of this hope, they could live a little longer.
The car entered the Central District, the heavy gate of the wall opened, and the car drove in.
The zombies nearby had basically all been cleared out; everyone's efficiency was quite high.
"Nickname, come to the conference room for a moment."
