94: Chapter 94 Something's happened!
Song Yunqing quickly stood up and walked over. "Ningning, let me heal him."
Xu Wanning nodded. "Thank you, Qingqing."
The injury was not serious, and it was healed in no time. Song Yunqing returned to continue eating, and Lu Chengyue and the others raised their glasses high. Cheers!
After drinking three cans of beer, Lu Chengyue set down his beer can, leaned in close to Xu Wanning, and said, "Ningning, let's go for a stroll."
"Okay." Xu Wanning stood up and followed him toward the defensive wall.
The wall used a steel frame structure and was very sturdy. Earth-type Ability users and Metal-element ability users had reinforced it as well. Unless a large horde of zombies attacked, especially with Supernatural ability zombies present, it would be impossible to breach. There were seven such layers of walls in total.
The two sat side by side on the wall, with the celebrating survivors below and the clear sky above them once again.
The high temperatures hadn't arrived yet. When they did, the sky would turn completely orange-red; the higher the temperature, the redder it would become.
At this moment, the night sky was as clean as if it had been washed, with no smog or dust.
Xu Wanning leaned on Lu Chengyue's shoulder and closed her eyes.
"Are you tired?" Lu Chengyue adjusted his posture.
Xu Wanning rubbed against his shoulder. "Not tired, I just want to lean on you like this."
She reached out and ruffled Lu Chengyue's hair. It had grown long and was almost covering his eyes. "It's time for a haircut."
"You can cut it for me when we go back." Lu Chengyue squeezed her fingers.
"Don't blame me if I ruin it." Xu Wanning didn't have the confidence that she could cut hair well.
"I won't blame you, as long as you don't think it's ugly." Lu Chengyue didn't care what others thought; as long as Ningning thought it looked good, that was enough.
The two sat there for a long time. Stars began to emerge one by one, while singing and laughter drifted up from below, and the bonfire shrank in size.
"A-Yue, do you remember the day you first met me?" Xu Wanning suddenly asked.
"I remember."
"What was your first impression of me?" Xu Wanning was very curious.
Lu Chengyue thought for a moment. "This girl is really beautiful; her eyes are beautiful, her fingers are beautiful."
Xu Wanning laughed. "Was it love at first sight based on looks?"
Lu Chengyue also curled his lips. "It was. But at the time, I thought you definitely wouldn't like me, so I didn't dare to think about anything else."
"Later, when we got together, I secretly made up my mind that I must make you happy and would never let you cry."
They had been married for a year. There was no need for a confession; he just wanted to tell her.
Xu Wanning turned to look at him. "A-Yue, you've done it."
The two fell silent again. After a while, Xu Wanning spoke up again. "A-Yue, what do you think we should do during the year of high temperatures? Should we just stay underground and not come out?"
Lu Chengyue closed his eyes. "Plant flowers, go shopping, sleep."
"Be serious." Xu Wanning hit him.
"I am being serious." Lu Chengyue looked at her. "Ningning, you have to compensate me."
This year, they hadn't slept together very often. Mainly because they were too tired during the day, and he couldn't bear to tire Ningning out at night. He only touched her when she wanted to, which was only three times a week. It wasn't enough, not enough at all.
Xu Wanning giggled. "Since we'll be idle, compensating you isn't impossible, but I'm afraid it'll be too hot then, and there won't be any interest."
Lu Chengyue stiffened. That was actually possible. Just moving would make one drenched in sweat, so everyone would surely stay still as much as possible.
Xu Wanning twisted the wedding ring on her finger. She had worn it for a year, and it hadn't suffered any damage at all. "After the high temperatures end, there will be another round of Acid Rain. Who knows how many survivors will mutate by then. After the high temperatures, there might even be other natural disasters like extreme cold, floods, earthquakes, and so on..."
Lu Chengyue hugged her tighter. "It's okay. As long as we are always together, no matter what happens in the future, we will definitely be able to survive it."
Xu Wanning gripped his hand tightly, rubbing the back of his hand. "Mm."
The bonfire in The Square shrank another circle. The singing had stopped, some people were packing up their things, and others had already gone back to rest.
The base gradually quieted down.
Lu Chengyue lowered his head and kissed the top of her head.
Xu Wanning lifted her head slightly, finding his lips.
This kiss was very light, not rushed, not heavy.
The starry sky above was so clear it looked fake, with the Milky Way spanning the firmament and billions of stars shining quietly.
On the edge of the Milky Way, there was a faint trace of green, very faint, hanging there motionlessly, like a half-opened eye.
Xu Wanning and Lu Chengyue didn't see it; at that moment, their eyes were closed, foreheads pressed against foreheads, and nose tips touching nose tips.
After the kiss ended, the two sat for a while longer before going home, taking everyone to move into the rooms in the Underground City.
Each room wasn't very big, but they had wardrobes, beds, and bathrooms—all the basic necessities.
The two tossed and turned all night, as if wanting to make up for everything they had owed before.
At three in the morning, the soldier on sentry duty, Wu Yan, was jolted awake.
He wasn't supposed to be on duty today. After the carnival ended, most of the people in the base were drunk. He didn't drink, so he took over the shift.
He leaned against the wall of the watchtower, looking at the darkness outside. He had dozed off in the second half of the night; it wasn't long, probably only about ten minutes or so.
A slight vibration woke him up. It wasn't an earthquake; it felt more like something passing underneath the ground, and he could feel a slight tremor under his feet.
Wu Yan cursed, grabbed his binoculars, and looked out. Something was moving on the horizon.
He adjusted the focus. A layer of mist was surging along the ground, about the height of a person's thigh. It was very thick, or more accurately, it looked like liquid flowing.
The moonlight shining on it didn't reflect any light at all; instead, it was absorbed into it.
Wherever the mist passed, flowers, plants, and trees instantly withered, turned black, and shattered.
"Damn it!" Wu Yan put down his binoculars and reached out to press the alarm button.
The sound of the alarm tore through the peace of the Safe Zone.
Xu Wanning and Lu Chengyue stopped at the same time when the alarm sounded, quickly separated, and put on their clothes. "Something happened!"
Lu Chengyue pulled up his pants, rolled out of bed, and grabbed his T-shirt to put on.
The two went out of the room, pushed the door open, and the hallway was full of people.
Song Yunqing poked her head out from the room next door, her hair disheveled, her eyes not yet fully open. "What's going on?"
Xu Wanning shook her head. "I don't know, let's go out and see first."
Before she had even finished speaking, a scream came from outside.
It wasn't the alarm; it was a human scream, followed by more and more screams.
The two ran out quickly, pushed open the main gate, and rushed to The Square.
The bonfire in The Square hadn't completely gone out yet, and the wood that had been burning all night flared up again when the wind blew.
Wu Yan stood on the watchtower, pointing in the direction outside the base gate. "Over there, there's something over there."
Everyone looked in the direction he was pointing: gray-green mist.
The mist was seeping into the base through the gaps in the gate, cracks in the wall, and the railings of the drainage ditch, flowing very slowly.
A young man stood by the edge of the mist, wanting to test it with his foot.
"Don't touch it!" When Xu Wanning shouted, it was already too late.
The moment the young man's sole stepped into the mist, the mist coiled up along his ankle.
He let out a scream—not from pain, but from cold, cold to the bone. Within three seconds of the mist touching below his ankle, he lost all sensation.
Two soldiers rushed up from behind, grabbed him by the collar, and dragged him out of the thick fog. The soles of his shoes had already frozen into a layer of white frost.
