98: Chapter 98 Extreme Cold Arrives First

Lu Chengyue's hand moved from her lower abdomen to her lower back, pulling her closer to him.

Her nose brushed against his collarbone, and her knees were wedged between his. They stayed pressed together, so close there wasn't a single gap between them.

Before long, both of them fell asleep; there was still a tough battle to fight that night.

Outside, the zombies were still standing, their grey-green eyes lighting up again as night fell.

"Roar!" Sounds of roaring echoed.

Xu Wanning opened her eyes, sat up, and began putting on her shoes.

Lu Chengyue woke up as well.

The two of them silently got dressed, rushed to their sniper positions, and opened fire!

The thick grey-green fog appeared once more, weighing heavily upon the street.

Xu Wanning pressed her right eye against the scope, aimed the crosshairs at the most conspicuous zombie on the street, and pulled the trigger.

Bullets weren't infinite, so they had to be used sparingly; they had already wasted quite a few clearing out zombies earlier.

The zombie's head was shot through, exploding, and it slumped to the ground, pinning another zombie corpse beneath it.

In the ten-story office building across the street, the flickering muzzle flashes lit up at the windows.

Even though they were using silencers, some noise could still be heard.

Soon, she noticed something wrong: as soon as they killed a zombie, another one would be replenished from the thick fog.

Xu Wanning fired a shot through a female zombie wearing a floral dress, and instantly, another zombie walked out of the thick fog.

"This is fucking endless!" Zhao Qiang shouted; he had noticed it too.

So, the conservation she had thought of earlier was real; as long as there were no casualties on the human side, the zombies would continue to be replenished.

But it was impossible for no one to die in other cities. Could it be that the thick fog was present in every city and managed independently?

That was too bizarre.

Was this an attempt to completely wipe out humanity?

"Holy shit!" Su Chenyu pointed at the thick fog in the distance. Dense figures were walking out of the fog again, crowding together, shoulder to shoulder, with those in front being pushed forward by those behind.

It seemed that a large number of zombies had been eliminated at the other buildings.

This couldn't go on. Bullets would run out, Supernatural ability would be exhausted, but the zombies were endless.

Xu Wanning took out her walkie-talkie and contacted the nearby squad leaders, who then contacted other captains, slowly passing the word up to The Great Leader.

"The zombies are replenishing their numbers. For every one we kill, they replace it; we can't kill them all!"

Upon hearing this news, those squad leaders' eyes turned red. "Then what do we do?"

They couldn't stop; the zombies were all pushing toward the main entrances of every building. If they managed to squeeze in, the consequences would be unimaginable.

They had no other choice but to keep firing their guns and unleashing their Supernatural ability.

Xu Wanning unleashed her Ice Ability, freezing a large area of zombies, preventing them from advancing. It didn't matter if the zombies behind them approached; they couldn't squeeze in.

The Ability Users took turns resisting the zombies' entry until the next morning, when the zombies stood still once again.

Everyone came out and returned to the Central District. A large number of soldiers were deployed to pick up the survivors in the residential buildings and transfer them to the Central District.

On June 25th, it snowed.

At first, everyone was just curious about why it was snowing in June, but later they remembered what Xu Wanning had said about the high heat and extreme cold.

So, the high heat hadn't come, but the extreme cold had arrived first; it was completely different from Xu Wanning's past life.

The Great Leader convened an emergency meeting to prepare for heating.

That night, the temperature plummeted, dropping straight from over twenty degrees Celsius to minus thirty-five degrees, and it continued to fall.

Xu Yu tapped the thermometer placed outside. "It's too cold. If it weren't for the heating, they could freeze to death."

Jing City had heating to hold out, but in the south, where there was no heating, they could only rely on air conditioning.

The zombies outside were moving around, completely unfazed by the cold.

The Great Leader, wearing a down jacket, a mask, a scarf, and gloves, stood on the defensive wall, with Xu Wanning standing next to him.

"What should we do? The zombies aren't afraid at all. No matter how thick the walls are, they won't hold up." The Great Leader sniffled.

Xu Wanning blinked. "Pour water. In this weather, it will freeze instantly, and these zombies won't be able to move. Since the zombies can't be eliminated and we don't want anyone to die, we might as well coexist."

"We can kill some every day and collect the crystal nucleus. I've thought about it over and over; these zombies were completely sent here for us to level up."

The Great Leader clapped his hands. "Good! That's a good method!" He turned to look at his subordinates. "Quick, call all the Water-Type Ability Users over and have them..."

Xu Wanning interrupted him. "There's no need for Water-Type Ability Users. Just use groundwater; it doesn't have to be clean water to pour on zombies."

The Great Leader slapped his forehead. Of course, that was it; he had been stuck in a habitual way of thinking.

The water pipes in the Central District were largely undamaged. It was unknown why those zombies hadn't destroyed the pipes when they emerged from underground, or why even the Underground City had remained intact.

Before, she had thought the Earth wanted to wipe out humanity, but now she felt that wasn't the case. Therefore, she had another hypothesis: perhaps it was to let them level up their Supernatural ability, and maybe the Ability Users would have very long lifespans.

Everything was just a hypothesis; until that day came, no one would know what was really going on.

Beside her, Lu Chengyue immediately gathered some men. Using the professional skills of a Firefighter, a group of people stood on the city wall with water hoses, opened the valves, and water jets shot out, spraying onto the zombies at the very front.

The zombies kept walking forward at first, but before long, their entire bodies were frozen stiff.

A few soldiers tentatively went over, looped ropes around the zombies' heads, tied them up, and carried them directly inside.

"Dig out the crystal nucleus and send the zombie corpses to the heating facility; throw them into the boiler." Xu Wanning's eyes darted around; this way, they wouldn't have to struggle to find combustible materials or have someone with Fire Ability keep watch there.

The Great Leader laughed. "Nickname, that's a really great idea."

One by one, the frozen zombies had their heads chopped off, their crystal nucleus removed, and were transported to the boiler room by large trucks.

When not in use, they were left outside to freeze; when needed, they were thawed out first, then thrown directly in, and the fire burned vigorously.

Xu Yu leaned against the window, watching the zombies being transported to the boiler room. "Haha, who would have thought that one day we'd be staying in a heated room where zombies are used as fuel?"

Xu Jingping and Xu Jingan were also watching from the window. "This temperature is fine for us Northeasterners; we're used to it. As long as there's heating, we don't have to worry, but for the Southerners, it's going to be tough!"

Xu Wanning was also talking to The Great Leader about this at the moment. "Uncle, can the survivors in the South make it through?"

"Yes, I'll notify them in a moment to use your method—directly using zombies as fuel to generate electricity, ensuring the air conditioning can run."

"If the air conditioning can't be used, then they'll just have to gather together and burn stoves."

It wasn't that he hadn't thought about installing heating in the South, but there wasn't enough time; there was no way to retrofit the entire city in such a short period. Only a few villa areas had been successfully retrofitted, and rural households had built heated brick beds (kangs).

"That's good. If it's the same as in my past life, the extreme cold will only last for a year. We must make good use of this year to obtain a large amount of crystal nucleus and level up!"
