70: Chapter 70: We'll be sharing a room?
Xu Wanning's footsteps as she headed upstairs stopped immediately. She turned and ran back out, opened the inner door, and looked at Lu Chengyue and the others standing outside through the gate. She hurried to the gate to open it.
As soon as the gate opened, she threw herself into his arms. "A-Yue, how come you guys are here?"
Standing outside were Lu Chengyue and his comrades from the Fire Station—20 of them in total. These were the ones Xu Wanning already knew; the others who had returned to Jing City later were not here.
Lu Chengyue held her tightly. "The Great Leader assigned me here. From now on, we are responsible for the security here."
Xu Wanning was pleasantly surprised; she hadn't expected The Great Leader to make such an arrangement. "What about Police Captain Cheng Jingchuan?"
She had assumed that Police Captain Cheng Jingchuan would lead the security team here, since The Great Leader had always assigned him to her before.
Lu Chengyue put his arm around her and walked inside. "He is here too. He has 20 men on his side, and I have 20 on mine. We're on a shift rotation."
Jiang Yishen and the others followed instinctively.
"Isn't it a bit much to assign so many people to me?" It was such a small place, it didn't seem necessary, but Steward Zhang Song had said they would have 24-hour security, so 20 people per shift was reasonable.
Lu Chengyue didn't see anything wrong with it. If it were up to him, he would have brought even more people to protect Ningning. "It is necessary. You are more important than you imagine."
Xu Wanning nodded. "Alright then." Since they were already here, it was better that they were assigned to her side; she wouldn't have to worry so much.
As soon as Lu Chengyue and his men entered the house, Lu Zhiyu and the Lu couple hurried over.
"Big Brother, why are you guys here?"
"Son, what is this about?"
Lu Chengyue held Xu Wanning's hand. "We've been assigned as the security for this villa. From now on, we'll be living in the security building behind this one."
That security building housed all the security personnel responsible for the villa area, with a layout of three units per floor.
Lu Mingyuan and Shen Yirou couldn't help but tear up. It would be a lie to say they weren't worried about their son, but it was his beloved profession. Now that he could be assigned to be near them, they could rest a bit easier.
"That's great!" Lu Zhiyu clapped.
A notification sounded in Xu Wanning's student group with an @all message from the counselor: "Students whose homes are in Hai City, pack your things and go downstairs. Students whose homes are in Jin City, pack your things and go downstairs."
It seemed the relocation work had begun in an orderly fashion. Everyone living in this villa area was in the know, so there were no signs of chaos outside.
However, outside the villa area, things were a bit chaotic. Those working overtime, night owls, and bar-goers were currently being friendly escorted home by soldiers who had been fully mobilized.
Some were very cooperative, but others were not, even attempting to attack the police and soldiers.
However, this time the soldiers were very firm; they raised their guns directly. The people who were clamoring immediately fell silent and did whatever they were told.
By 10 PM, apart from vehicles transporting people, there wasn't a single person wandering on the streets. Staff members responsible for each residential area began going door-to-door, distributing supplies for the night and the entire next day.
Some people were happy in the owners' group chat: "Just treat it like a long weekend. We don't even have to spend money on groceries. Awesome!"
Others weren't so happy: "You lose 100 for a day off, I lose 500. Is that the same thing?"
"Oh my, look at you, so capable. If you're so capable, do you want to go against the country? Be careful, or you might catch the virus and not live to spend your money."
Xu Wanning turned off her phone and enabled Do Not Disturb mode, setting it to only alert her when administrators spoke.
Early the next morning, Xu Wanning and Lu Chengyue headed to the Civil Affairs Bureau. They were the only couple there to register their marriage. On the road, apart from vehicles transporting people, no one else could be seen.
The registration went quickly. The moment she held the red booklet, Xu Wanning felt an incomparable sense of peace.
The two of them held their marriage certificates and, with the help of the staff, took a photo. Afterward, they returned home, and the staff members also headed home with the help of the security team.
Xu Wanning felt a bit embarrassed. She hadn't expected it to be opened exclusively for her; it was too much trouble for them.
"A-Yue, we are officially legal now." Xu Wanning shook the marriage certificate in her hand.
"Yeah." Lu Chengyue gripped the marriage certificate in his hand, his expression dazed. He hadn't expected that he would just like that become a married man, and he and Ningning had known each other for less than three months.
Seeing that Lu Chengyue remained silent, Xu Wanning turned her head to look at him. "What's wrong? Are you unhappy?"
Lu Chengyue shook his head. "No, I'm just too happy."
His mother always said his wife was a fire truck. In reality, he yearned for a home more than anyone, but he felt his profession was dangerous and, coupled with not having met the right person, he had always maintained a persona of not wanting to settle down.
But just today, he suddenly had a home of his own and a wife.
As soon as the word "wife" appeared in his mind, he couldn't stop the corners of his mouth from curling up.
"Let's go home." The two of them held hands, quickly left the Civil Affairs Bureau, and drove home.
Qin Qingru was the first to notice them returning and ran over quickly. "Oh my, you're back. Did you get the certificate? Quick, let Second Aunt see."
Xu Wanning took out her marriage certificate and handed it over, while Shen Yirou snatched Lu Chengyue's as well.
Once the group saw the marriage certificates, they completely ignored the couple and all swarmed over to admire them.
Lu Zhiyu's eyes darted over. "Big Brother, Sister-in-law, now that you've received your marriage certificates, are you going to share a room?"
Lu Chengyue's ears turned bright red instantly. "No, no, we'll take it slow."
He knew that Ningning had registered with him only because she was afraid there wouldn't be a chance after The Apocalypse. He couldn't be so impatient; it wouldn't be right.
Their relationship hadn't reached that stage yet. He hoped their romance would progress gradually, with every step taken in order.
Xu Wanning didn't mind. Since they were already married, he would be hers sooner or later.
She wondered if there were any condoms in that batch of goods from the supermarket. She definitely didn't want to have a child during The Apocalypse; children were naturally physically weaker and more susceptible to the zombie virus.
In her past life, she had seen too many infant and toddler zombies, which was heartbreaking to witness.
Lu Zhiyu looked at Xu Wanning. "Ningning, you think so too?" She was very afraid that Ningning would find her brother too old-fashioned.
Xu Wanning nodded. "Yeah, I also hope we can take it step by step." Two people can only go far if they keep the same pace.
After The Apocalypse, she had seen too many couples break up; basically, after sleeping together for a while, they would get tired of each other.
At first, they were together because of their looks, but once they really lived together, they discovered a bunch of annoying habits in each other. They broke up quickly and found new partners just as quickly.
She didn't want to go down that path with Lu Chengyue. Since she had chosen him, she hoped it would be for a lifetime, and she knew Lu Chengyue felt the same way.
Lu Chengyue looked down at her slightly. It was so good that she understood him.
Since the couple both thought that way, Lu Zhiyu didn't want to be an eyesore. "Then, Big Brother, where are you sleeping? There is still an empty room downstairs."
"Okay, then I'll sleep in that one." As long as he could stay here, it was fine. If he went to the security building, he wouldn't be able to see her all the time.
"Hurry, look at the news!" Suddenly, Xu Yu pointed at the TV and shouted.
