49: Chapter 49 You're being mean to me!
At 10 p.m., when she returned to her room, her face was still burning. She took out her phone and made a video call to Lu Chengyue.
It rang for a long time before he answered.
Lu Chengyue's face appeared on the screen. His hair was still dripping, and he wasn't wearing a shirt. His chest and shoulders were visible, water droplets still clinging to his skin, and the scar below his collarbone was clearly visible.
He had just finished showering and answered the call instinctively when he saw it coming in, not realizing it was a video call. The moment he saw his own appearance, he quickly face-downed the phone on the table.
The sound of Lu Chengyue frantically rummaging for something came through the phone.
"What's wrong?" Xu Wanning feigned confusion.
"Wait a moment." Lu Chengyue's muffled voice came from afar.
Xu Wanning smiled and took off her coat, leaving only the white T-shirt she wore underneath, waiting obediently.
Ten seconds later, the screen lit up. Lu Chengyue had put on his training uniform, but the collar was crooked, and he had even put it on backwards.
Xu Wanning noticed it immediately but didn't say anything.
On the screen, Xu Wanning looked like a freshly washed peach—plump and tempting, making one want to take a bite through the screen.
Lu Chengyue spoke unnaturally, "It's so late, what is it?"
He was completely tense; one could feel the 'threat' of his pectoral muscles even through the screen.
Xu Wanning chuckled, "I had some wine and can't sleep."
"Did you drink alone?" Lu Chengyue's focus was always on this; he was afraid someone else was keeping her company.
Xu Wanning shook her head, intentionally letting him stew in anxiety for a moment before answering, "I drank with everyone. We went to stock up on alcohol today, so we all had a little."
"Are you in a bad mood?" Lu Chengyue didn't think Xu Wanning was the type to let herself get drunk. The beauty on the screen was clearly a bit tipsy, daring to video call a man while dressed like that.
"Nope. I promised to call you, and you must have been waiting for a long time." Xu Wanning mumbled as she lay down, fixing her phone on a stand next to her pillow.
"You should sleep." Lu Chengyue took a deep breath. This angle was too unfair; it felt as if she were sleeping right beside him.
Xu Wanning giggled foolishly, "I've noticed you always tell me to sleep."
Lu Chengyue sighed helplessly, "You need to sleep."
Xu Wanning huffed, "No."
"Then what will it take for you to go to sleep?" Lu Chengyue took his phone and sat on the bed. Fortunately, Jiang Yishen was on leave and not around, otherwise he wouldn't know what to do.
"Sing me a lullaby." Xu Wanning's voice was soft and sticky, her coquettish behavior coming naturally to her.
Lu Chengyue took a deep breath, steeling himself, "I'm tone-deaf when I sing."
Xu Wanning curled her lips, "It's okay, I love listening to it."
Lu Chengyue rubbed the back of his neck; unease, nervousness, and shyness washed over him all at once.
Xu Wanning leaned in closer, "You're blushing."
"I'm drunk." Lu Chengyue answered instinctively.
Xu Wanning tapped the Lu Chengyue on the screen, "You haven't even been drinking."
Lu Chengyue wiped away the sweat trickling down, "It's too hot in the room."
Xu Wanning smiled sweetly, "Is it really that hot in April? The heating is already off."
Lu Chengyue couldn't take it anymore, "Are you, or are you not going to sleep?"
Xu Wanning immediately whined, "You yelled at me!"
Lu Chengyue hurriedly coaxed her, "No, no, I didn't yell. I was just worried you wouldn't sleep well and would have a headache tomorrow."
Xu Wanning broke into a smile through her tears, "Hehe, I forgive you."
Lu Chengyue lost his temper, "Go to sleep."
Xu Wanning shook her head, "No."
"If you don't want to sleep, what do you want to do?" Lu Chengyue thought that as long as he did what she wanted, she should go to sleep obediently.
Xu Wanning rested her chin on her hand, her eyes sultry, "I want to look at you."
At those four words, Lu Chengyue on the screen froze completely, stunned. The tips of his ears turned red rapidly, and he gave a light cough, "You, you've had too much to drink."
Xu Wanning laid back down, "I haven't had too much."
"People who have had too much always say they haven't." Lu Chengyue changed his tone and began to coax her, "Sleep, be good."
"Lu Chengyue." Xu Wanning suddenly called out.
Lu Chengyue replied blankly, "Hmm?" Why did she suddenly call him by his full name?
Xu Wanning's crisp laughter rang out, "Your clothes are on backwards."
Lu Chengyue looked down and checked; they really were on backwards. His entire face flushed red, and he hurriedly hung up the video call in a panic.
Xu Wanning hugged her phone and laughed for a full minute; teasing him was just too satisfying.
Just as she decided to go to sleep, Lu Chengyue sent two messages.
A text message: [Go to sleep.]
A voice message: "The moon is bright, the breeze is light..."
A lullaby. He actually sang a lullaby. Wuwuwu, so happy!
Before she could finish listening, another message arrived: [Sleep now, I'll call you tomorrow.]
Xu Wanning quickly replied, [What time?]
[Nine o'clock tomorrow morning.]
[Do you promise?] If only there were a 'bedtime companion' service every night, hehe. Tomorrow, I'll definitely make him sing a lullaby in person.
[Yes.]
They were just one final layer of window paper away from breaking through, weren't they? Could they be considered a couple now?
Xu Wanning fell asleep happily. Her dreams weren't very innocent; it was all his fault for sneaking into them.
The next morning, after finishing her morning exercises, Xu Wanning started waiting, distracted even while eating.
Lin Wanqiu nudged her daughter's arm, "Ningning, what are you daydreaming about? There are no vegetables left in your bowl; pick some up."
"Ah, I'm eating, I'm eating." Xu Wanning hurriedly picked up some vegetables.
Two minutes passed.
Lin Wanqiu nudged her again, "Ningning, is something on your mind? Why are you only eating that one dish?"
Qin Qingru smiled, "Sister-in-law, this is clearly because she's in love and thinking about her partner."
Xu Wanning's face instantly turned red, "Second Aunt~~~"
Qin Qingru laughed even louder, "Still shy, are you? Don't worry, no one is making fun of you. We've all been through that phase."
Lin Wanqiu frowned and glanced at Xu Jingan. She knew her daughter liked the Lu boy, but what about him? It seemed like it was always her daughter approaching him, and the Lu boy was always dodging. This...
Xu Jingan patted the back of her hand, "Don't worry. Based on my observations, they like each other. They're just one step away from saying it out loud. It probably won't take more than a few days."
Xu Wanning didn't even finish her breakfast properly. Sigh, dating really isn't that easy.
At nine o'clock sharp, Lu Chengyue's call came. When she answered, her heart was beating abnormally fast, "Hello, Brother Chengyue."
Lu Chengyue's deep voice came through, "Have you finished eating?"
"Yeah, have you eaten?" Xu Wanning used to see other people in love asking these meaningless questions and couldn't understand it, but now that it was her turn, she was enjoying it immensely.
Lu Chengyue sounded like he enjoyed it very much too, "I've eaten."
"What did you have?" Xu Wanning caught a hint of something strange.
Lu Chengyue hesitated for a moment, "The cafeteria."
Xu Wanning said huffily, "Liar, you definitely haven't eaten."
Lu Chengyue was silent for two seconds, "How did you know?"
Xu Wanning hummed twice, "Your voice is lower than usual when you're hungry." She had discovered this during The Apocalypse, and it was very accurate.
Lu Chengyue was stunned, "You can even tell that?"
"Of course, I pay attention to everything about you." Xu Wanning continued to drop verbal bombs.
