114: Chapter 114 Can We Follow You?
Xu Wanning listened to their discussion and realized it really seemed to be the case.
"In that case, we'll take a two-pronged approach and split into two teams. One team will handle construction, and the other will clear out the zombies."
She looked at Zhou Ke. "Zhou Ke, you'll be responsible for splitting everyone into two teams based on their supernatural abilities and physical strength. Everyone must have work to do."
"Yes!" Zhou Ke immediately accepted the task.
The family members who previously had no choice but to idle at home were also very happy. They finally had work to do and wouldn't just be freeloaders.
After dinner, Zhou Ke finished organizing the teams. Dawn Team One had 100 people for clearing zombies, Dawn Team Two had 158 people for infrastructure construction, and Dawn Team Three had 30 people for logistics.
For the Metal-element ability users and Earth-type Ability users, only Lu Mingyuan and Zhou Ke were kept for Dawn Team One, while all the rest went to work on infrastructure.
Returning to their room, Xu Wanning lay on Lu Chengyue. Neither of them spoke, simply leaning against each other quietly, not even knowing when they fell asleep.
Waking up the next morning, Lu Chengyue wasn't by her side. Xu Wanning looked around before getting out of bed to wash up.
While she was brushing her teeth, Lu Chengyue walked in and leaned against the doorframe, watching her. "Ningning, the zombies were very active last night. Jiang Heng just took a look, and the area we cleared yesterday is filled with zombies again."
Xu Wanning curled her lips. "Isn't that great? It saves us the trouble of looking for them. I estimate there must be at least ten million zombies in the entire Jin City.
"We cleared about twenty thousand zombies yesterday. To clear them all out would take a month and a half, which isn't too long."
Lu Chengyue walked over to help tie up her hair. "Yeah. Once the zombies are cleared, we need to start preparing for natural disasters. We aren't familiar with Jin City, but I suspect that before The Apocalypse, Jin City must have built facilities to combat natural disasters. We need to look for them."
Xu Wanning spat out the foam in her mouth. "I assume there should be relevant information in the government building. We can go look for it once we've cleared our way over there."
"Yeah." Once Xu Wanning wiped the water from her mouth, Lu Chengyue found his chance to kiss her, making up for the kiss they missed last night.
Xu Wanning wrapped her arms around his neck, accepting his embrace.
Fifteen minutes later, they arrived at the dining hall.
Everyone sat separately according to Team One, Team Two, and Team Three, talking loudly about something.
"Sis, Brother-in-law, over here." Seeing them, Xu Yu waved his arm.
Xu Wanning nodded at him, got her food, and sat down. "You have so much energy every day."
She really envied Xu Yu's boundless energy every day.
Xu Yu burst out laughing. "Sis, you can't possibly understand the joy of a high schooler who doesn't have to go to school."
Everyone couldn't help but laugh. Having all gone through high school, they knew how hard it was, and anyone who survived it deserved praise.
After finishing their meal, everyone gathered at the main gate. Once everyone was there, Xu Wanning waved a small flag that Xu Yu had specially made. "Let's go!"
Fifteen days later.
"Sis, Sis, Zhang Yang and the others are back!" Xu Yu came running in. A moment later, Zhang Yang arrived with his teammates and their families.
They were all in bad shape, covered in blood, and some were severely injured.
Xu Wanning stood up. "Xiao Yu, go quickly and call your Sister Qingqing over."
"Alright." Xu Yu ran out.
"What took you so long? I thought you weren't planning on coming." Xu Wanning pointed to a row of chairs nearby, gesturing for them to sit.
Zhang Yang wiped the blood from his mouth. "As soon as we got back, we realized some of our family members were missing. Remembering what you said, we quietly sneaked into the Research Institute to rescue them. We didn't expect them to deploy so many people to hunt us down."
Xu Wanning scanned the group. They had thirty teammates before, but now only twenty-four remained. It went without saying that the other six had been killed.
Xu Wanning patted his shoulder. "Don't be disheartened. You have to live on well for their sakes."
Song Yunqing walked in behind Xu Yu. "Let's treat the severely injured first."
Hearing her words, everyone automatically pointed out the severely injured, and Song Yunqing went over to treat them one by one.
A moment later, Xia Xingxi also came over. "Was anyone injured by zombies? I can purify you for a bit."
Everyone shook their heads.
The situation was better than they had expected. Not being injured by zombies meant those protecting them had fought with everything they had.
"We agreed before to reserve the West District for you, so you can head straight there. Just remember to clear out the zombies in that area."
For the past half month, Xu Wanning and her group had barely moved, staying at The Square to kill zombies. When the zombies grew sparse, they would fly a drone around. She wasn't sure if there were many zombies in the West District right now.
Zhang Yang hesitated. "C-Can we follow you? We don't have any Wood Ability Users or Space Ability users, so even getting food is a problem. We are willing to follow you, as long as you can give us a bite to eat."
The others also looked at her with anxiety and anticipation.
"Sure," Xu Wanning didn't refuse. "Your residence will still be set in the West District."
For soldiers to lower themselves to this extent, it must have been a huge blow to their pride.
"Great." Zhang Yang nodded happily.
Xu Wanning pulled back her smile and assumed a serious expression. "It's almost time for lunch anyway, so stay and eat with us. After lunch, settle down in the West District, and then draw up a list of your personnel, their supernatural abilities, and specialties to hand in. We will arrange your work based on your circumstances.
"Dawn Base does not tolerate freeloaders. Everyone must work, regardless of whether they have supernatural abilities. If someone doesn't want to work, they can't stay even if their family is willing to support them. If you can accept this, stay. If not, you can leave right now."
Zhang Yang stood up as their representative. "Don't worry, Base Leader. None of us are lazy pleasure-seekers. As long as it's something we can do, we will give it our all."
"That's right." The people who came with him also stood up to show their determination.
Xu Wanning stood up and walked out. "Alright, the dining hall is on the third floor. You can head straight up. I'll be going first."
Reaching the door, she didn't leave immediately but stood there to listen.
"This place is really great. If I didn't know better, I'd think it was before The Apocalypse."
"Yeah, we barely saw any zombies since we entered Jin City."
"We shouldn't have to wander around anymore, right?"
"Of course. We're members of Dawn Base now. As long as we don't harbor any ulterior motives, we can definitely stay here forever."
"The Base Leader seems really powerful. She's probably an S-rank ability user."
"Probably even higher, maybe SS-rank."
Xu Wanning smiled and walked away.
She was currently an S-rank ability user, and the base didn't have any double-S ranks yet. For some reason, the zombies hadn't evolved further, remaining at A-rank. The crystal nuclei they obtained were also only A-rank. To upgrade to SS-rank, one needed to absorb 10,000 A-rank crystal nuclei.
Absorbing ten a day would take 1,000 days, which was far too long.
Lately, they had even slowed down their pace of clearing zombies, waiting for them to level up, but the zombies showed absolutely no sign of doing so.
"Sister Ning, we've reinforced the surrounding buildings over this period. Should we continue?" Zhou Ke walked over hurriedly.
