32: Possibly an ancient beacon of creation

Han Zhe examined them. Cold, unfamiliar, yet they were undeniably an armed force obeying his commands. A peculiar feeling welled up inside him—excitement, reassurance, and also a faint sense of alienation towards these non-human creations.

"Sequences 01 to 04, your primary mission is: defend the base. Establish patrol routes centered on the Barracks, covering the main areas of the platform and key facilities (Command Center, Fusion Reactor, refining core, Collection Station control nodes). Immediately report any unidentified, potentially threatening activity or targets via the command network, and retaliate when authorized or under attack. Standard alert protocol is in effect."

"Orders confirmed. Defend the base. Executing patrol and alert missions." The four sentinels responded simultaneously, then turned and split into two groups. With precise steps, they headed towards the two sides of the platform, beginning their first mission. Their movements were perfectly coordinated, as if sharing a single mind, accompanied only by the faint friction of mechanical joints and the low hum of thrusters.

Watching them blend into the darkness and lights of the platform's backdrop, Han Zhe felt the invisible weight on his shoulders lighten a fraction more. Now, he at least had a basic, expendable, and renewable layer of defense.

But he wasn't satisfied. Four basic sentinels were far from enough against a real threat. He needed more, and he needed them stronger.

"System, now that the Barracks is online, can we begin researching to unlock blueprints for more advanced infantry units? For example, the 'Sentry' MK II, or scout units?" Han Zhe asked.

[Conditions met. 'Basic Barracks' provides a research platform. Initiating 'Sentry' MK II upgrade research. Requirements: analyze MK I combat data (needs accumulation), additional resource investment: 500 points, energy: 3 units, time required: 6 standard hours. Upon completion, MK II production blueprints will be unlocked (enhanced armor, optional installation of light shield generator or enhanced laser weapon).]

[Simultaneously, 'Light Scout Unit' concept research can be initiated in parallel. Requirements: resource points 300, energy 2 units, time required: 4 standard hours. Research direction: high mobility, stealth, enhanced reconnaissance sensors.]

"Approve all! Begin research immediately!" Han Zhe authorized. Resource points and energy were relatively plentiful now; investing in technology was investing in future combat strength.

The two research tasks were added to the system queue. A portion of the Barracks' computing resources and the refining core's auxiliary analysis units were mobilized, beginning simulation runs and design work.

After arranging these matters, Han Zhe turned his gaze in another direction—towards the data storage unit recovered from the unknown probe wreckage. Previously, he had been too busy with survival and basic construction to spare it any attention. Now that the base had taken initial shape, with basic armaments and a relatively secure environment, it was time to try and uncover the secrets of this unexpected 'visitor.' It might bring risk, but it might also bring crucial information—about this star sector, about other civilizations, even clues about leaving this place.

He walked over to an independent analysis console in the Command Center, where the specially shielded containment box was placed. The box's surface bore no markings, only a system interface port.

"System, prepare for deep analysis of the unknown data storage unit. Activate the highest level isolation protocol, run the parsing program in an independent virtual environment to prevent any potential viruses, logic bombs, or back-tracing. Simultaneously, deploy some 'Sentry' units to guard the periphery of the analysis room, physically sever non-essential connections between the analysis console and the base's main network until safety is confirmed."

[Highest-level analysis protocol ready. Virtual isolation environment constructed. Physical security measures deployed. Attempting to establish low-privilege read-only connection...]

Han Zhe carefully opened the shielded box and retrieved the fingernail-sized, faintly glowing black crystal chip. He inserted it into the analysis console's specially designed reader interface, which featured multiple layers of filtering and buffering.

Instantly, the indicator lights on the console flashed frantically! Countless chaotic, high-speed data streams, encoded in a completely unfamiliar format, surged into the system like a breached dam!

[Warning! Encountering high-intensity encryption and anomalous data stream impact! Filtering protocols active... Attempting to identify underlying encoding logic... Matching database... No corresponding records found. Initiating adaptive decryption algorithm... Consuming additional computing power...]

The system's alert tone carried a hint of tension. Han Zhe stared intently at the screen, which was scrolling with incomprehensible gibberish and error messages. The technological level of this storage unit was clearly not low.

Time passed minute by minute. The analysis progress bar crawled forward slowly, with extreme difficulty. 1%... 2%... 5%... Just as the progress reached around 7%, a portion of the gibberish on the screen suddenly stabilized, forming an extremely concise, abstract, yet seemingly patterned combination of pictographic symbols and geometric shapes! Simultaneously, the parsing program captured some recurring, unique data clusters resembling 'identifiers' or 'keywords.'

[Partial underlying data encoding cracked! Basic information structure identified. Beginning extraction of readable information fragments...]

Several lines of fragmented text (translated by the system) and blurry, distorted image fragments appeared on the screen:

Text Fragment A: "...Third Survey Fleet... 'Foresight'... routine scan... unregistered star sector... detected Anomalous Gravity Well... coordinates... (data corrupted)... decided to investigate further..."

Image Fragment A: A distorted, eerily colored nebula background. A slender, pale purple-coated ship silhouette (consistent with the discovered probe's style) was entering a blurry, space-rending Fissure.

Text Fragment B: "...Inside the Fissure... spatial structure unstable... detected high-intensity... unknown energy signal... source... non-natural... suspected... (data corrupted)... Ancient Artifact?... dispatching probe unit..."

Image Fragment B: Probe's perspective, rapidly flying through a bizarre, ever-shifting colored tunnel. Ahead, the faint outline of a massive, ruined, indescribably shaped shadow loomed.

Text Fragment C: "...Probe unit transmitted preliminary data... structural analysis... tech level... cannot be assessed... contains... dangerous energy reaction... recommend... fleet maintain distance... await further... (data corrupted)..."

Image Fragment C: A close-up of a section of that massive shadow. It appeared to be a corner of some kind of gigantic machine or structure, its surface covered with incomprehensible runes and energy veins, with areas showing signs of meltdown and fracture.

Text Fragment D: "...Warning! Detected... active scanning pulse! Source: interior of the shadow! Probe unit locked!... Under... energy impact... systems damaged... transmitting final data and distress signal... (data completely interrupted)..."

Image Fragment D: The final image was a violently shaking, snow-filled view from inside the probe. External sensors captured a searing, indescribably colored energy beam rushing towards it, then the screen went completely dark.

The information ended abruptly here.

Han Zhe stared at the screen, silent for a long time.

Third Survey Fleet? 'Foresight'? Unknown star sector? Anomalous Gravity Well? Ancient Artifact? Dangerous energy reaction? Active attack?

These fragments pieced together a disturbing story: An unknown civilization (pale purple style, advanced technology) survey fleet discovered an anomalous spatial phenomenon (gravity well/Fissure), sent a probe to investigate, found a massive structure suspected to be an ancient relic, then the probe was detected and destroyed by a defensive mechanism (or something else) inside that structure, sending out a distress signal (likely the previously detected pulse) and final data before its demise.

And the wreckage of this destroyed probe somehow ended up drifting into this debris belt, where he found it.

What was that 'Ancient Artifact'? Ruins? A weapon? Some kind of slumbering terror? Was it still there? Did that unknown civilization's fleet receive the distress signal and come to investigate? If they came, did they leave, or... A chill crawled up Han Zhe's spine. He had originally thought this debris belt was just a garbage dump from past wars, but now it seemed it might be adjacent to (or even partially within) an even more bizarre and dangerous region. That 'Anomalous Gravity Well' or 'Fissure' might be not far away!

The storage unit he obtained wasn't just a technological sample; it might also be a... signpost, or rather, a warning, pointing towards an unknown dangerous region.

"System, record and encrypt all parsed information. Mark key terms like 'Anomalous Gravity Well,' 'Ancient Artifact,' 'dangerous energy reaction,' 'active attack.' Attempt to reconstruct the most precise coordinate information possible from the data fragments, even if it's only a relative bearing." Han Zhe's voice turned serious.

[Information encrypted and archived. Attempting coordinate reconstruction... Data severely corrupted, unable to obtain absolute coordinates. Can only infer, based on the probe's last known position before entering the Fissure and relative references from ship log fragments, that the 'Anomalous Gravity Well/Fissure' is likely located within a spherical region centered on this debris belt, with a radius of... three to five light-years. Error margin is extremely large.]

Three to five light-years... On a cosmic scale, it wasn't far, but for him now, it was an insurmountable chasm. But it also meant the danger might not be unreachable.

Han Zhe walked over to the star map in the Command Center (currently still crude, with only rough markings of the nearby debris belt and a few positioning stars). He gazed at the area of darkness representing the unknown.

The Barracks were built, the first soldiers were in service. But this level of strength, faced with the destructive energy beam in the probe's footage, or a civilization capable of building that 'Ancient Artifact,' probably wouldn't even qualify as an ant.

The sense of crisis hadn't vanished with the base's initial establishment. Instead, it had become clearer and more concrete in another form.

He needed to develop faster. More soldiers, stronger equipment, more advanced technology, and perhaps... a ship capable of leaving this place.

"System," Han Zhe turned, his gaze firm once more, "once the 'Sentry' MK II and scout unit research is complete, immediately begin the next phase. Evaluate our current resources and technology, design a basic combat unit or defense platform suitable for space environment operations, even if it's the most rudimentary. Simultaneously, begin collecting and organizing all technological fragments related to ship propulsion, navigation, and life support, preparing for possible future 'mobility.'"

"Additionally, after completing follow-up maintenance on the Barracks and resource transport, have the 'Pioneer' squad continue searching the debris belt for any special wreckage potentially related to technology or energy. We need anything that might accelerate our technological progress."

"Sentry units, increase patrol density and range, especially on the platform's edge facing the inferred 'anomalous region' direction. Report immediately with highest priority for any anomalous energy fluctuations or unidentified objects approaching."

Orders were issued methodically. The base, which had just relaxed slightly with the Barracks' completion, once again entered a state of high-speed operation and combat readiness.

Han Zhe watched the various data streams and unit statuses on the holographic projection, his fingers unconsciously tapping the edge of the console.

The Barracks were just the beginning.

In this dark and dangerous star sea, to truly survive, or even... go further, he needed more than just hiding and defending.

He also needed sharp spears, and a ship sturdy enough to carry him into the unknown.
