80: An unexpected discovery
Time passed like a taut silken thread, stretched thin and slow amidst the silent growth of the Ark World's iron skeleton and the looming threat of the Imperial hounds. Deep within the core of Forge-I, the Earth Core Furnace was cautiously restarted with the aid of Zero-Point Energy, its energy output layered with suppression and camouflage, like the suppressed breathing of a giant beast. Massive alloy frameworks spread outward from the furnace core like planetary veins and nerves. The first few Reality Overwrite test zones began to manifest smooth, anti-common-sense geometric metal surfaces, as if unnatural creations were growing from the planet's surface.
The Wall of Silence protocol was running at its limit. All non-essential energy radiation was consumed; communications relied on short-range, directional quantum entanglement relays and disposable drifting beacons. The fleet was like a true phantom, performing only minimal maneuvers when absolutely necessary. Theoretically, the entire Human Federation-controlled zone should appear as a "void in reality" or "natural interstellar turbulence" to the Empire's wide-range psychic scans and conventional detection.
However, the Emperor's "Mark" seemed to grant the Empire a vague perception of "heretical" existence that transcended the conventional. Even though the Human Federation's stealth technology was no longer what it once was, that soul-chilling "gaze"—the feeling of being swept over by an invisible eye—would still pass over providence's core sensor arrays and the fringes of consciousness of a few psychic-sensitives like a dark cloud from time to time. The Empire had not pinpointed them, but it had undoubtedly listed this "silent zone" as a highly suspicious target.
This pressure, like a thorn in the back, forced the construction of the Ark World's defense systems to an unprecedented priority. Under providence's coordination, the engineering team designed a multi-layered planetary defense system named the wall of sighs:
· Outermost layer: Conceptual Fog. Utilizing Reality Weaving technology to create large-scale, continuous, harmless but extremely complex spatial curvature perturbations and "information turbulence" background noise around the Ark World. Any ship entering the area without authorization would have its sensors and navigation systems severely interfered with, as if trapped in a bizarre labyrinth, making it difficult to pinpoint or aim accurately.
· Middle layer: Zero-Point Resonance Grid. Deploying a large number of hidden, automated defense platforms powered by Zero-Point Energy. These platforms usually remained dormant, blending into the background radiation. Once an unidentified intrusion was detected, they would activate, firing interlaced Zero-Point Wave Beams and Conceptual Disintegration Pulses to form a lethal interception firenet.
· Core layer: The ark itself. The Ark World's gradually forming metal shell and internal structure were designed as natural electromagnetic and energy absorption/deflection bodies, with countless weapon ports and shield generator nodes pre-installed. Its massive internal Zero-Point Energy array was sufficient to support a planet-wide Concept Stabilization Shield, capable of withstanding most orbital bombardments except for Exterminatus Order weapons.
· Final Resort: Reality Folding protocol (Theoretical). This was the most extreme and dangerous component of the wall of sighs, activated only when the Ark World faced the threat of total destruction. Its principle was to momentarily overload the Reality Weaving core, forcibly subjecting the Ark World and its surrounding space to a brief "conceptual folding" or "phase shift," causing it to temporarily "disappear" from the current physical universe to evade a fatal blow. However, the success rate was unknown, and it could trigger catastrophic spatial structural collapse or unpredictable dimensional shifts.
Just as the basic framework of the wall of sighs began to be laid and the Ark World's silhouette increasingly revealed its unnatural, formidable profile against the stars, the trace of the Imperial "Hounds" finally turned from a vague warning into a physical entity.
"Pioneer Front-Deepest Outpost reporting! Unidentified Warp jump-out signal detected! Bearing: approximately eight light-years from the Ark World core area, near the blurred boundary between the buffer zone and known Imperial territory! Signal signature... confirmed! Imperial Navy, one Storm-class light cruiser accompanied by two Sword-class frigates! The target has initiated conventional scanning. Heading... straight toward the interior of our controlled zone!"
It had come! Although it was only a small reconnaissance flotilla, this was undoubtedly the Imperial Navy's tentative feelers!
"Order all peripheral units to maintain absolute silence; no proactive detection or interception allowed," Han Zhe ordered immediately, his voice calm. "Activate the wall of sighs' outer Conceptual Fog to minimum interference mode, simulating natural spatial turbulence. Let them in. Ghost fleet, prepare to tail and monitor them; record all their behavioral patterns, scanning frequencies, and communication content."
"Are you concerned they might discover the Ark World or our main bases?" Alpha-01 (Strategic Advisor) asked.
"The Conceptual Fog and our stealth technology are sufficient to handle conventional reconnaissance. Besides," a sharp glint flashed in Han Zhe's eyes, "I want to see, after all these years, how much of the Great Crusade era's quality remains in the Imperial Navy."
The Imperial reconnaissance fleet was clearly unaware of the Human Federation's active concealment and surveillance. Like explorers entering an unfamiliar forest, cautious but carrying the Imperial Navy's habitual arrogance, they moved slowly through the annoying sensor noise created by the Conceptual Fog, routinely scanning and recording. Their communications (successfully intercepted and decrypted by the Ghost fleet) were filled with contempt for this "barren sector" and formulaic searches for "possible traces of heresy."
A few days later, the small fleet seemed to have found nothing and prepared to turn back. However, just as they were about to leave the Human Federation's inner controlled zone and approached a "rich ore zone" (camouflaged as a natural asteroid belt) rich in Zero-Point Energy resonance crystals, an unexpected event occurred!
Several Human Federation automated resource collection barges (equipped with basic self-defense weapons) hidden in the shadows of the ore-rich asteroids suddenly opened fire! They had misidentified the Imperial ships' close-range scans as an encounter with space pirates or hostile xenos, triggering a preset low-level defense protocol. Though the firepower was weak, it shattered the silence!
The Imperial cruiser was clearly stunned by this sudden attack from the "asteroids," but its response was well-trained—it immediately sounded the battle alarm, raised shields to full, and turned its main guns to lock onto the barges' position! The two frigates quickly moved forward to provide cover!
"Oh no! The automated barges are exposed!" the monitoring personnel exclaimed.
"Order the barges to cease fire immediately and initiate self-destruct! Ghost monitoring fleet, prepare to recover barge crew (if any) and jam the Imperial ships' targeting!" Han Zhe reacted quickly, but his brow was furrowed. Accidents always arrived before plans.
However, what happened next left everyone in the Human Federation command center... perplexed.
The Imperial Storm-class cruiser's main gun—a Laser Macrocannon that should have been quite powerful—fired a beam whose energy density and rate of fire were at least 15% lower than the parameters for similar vessels recorded in the Human Federation's database! Furthermore, when its shields took hits from the barges' sporadic Railgun Slugs, the magnitude of the flickering and the recovery speed seemed... somewhat "sluggish"? The evasive maneuvers of the two Sword-class frigates also appeared to have an indescribable "stiffness" and "formulaic" nature to the Human Federation's sensors and analysis software.
It was as if... the weapons were excellent, but the users were unskilled, or the weapons themselves hadn't reached their theoretical optimal state?
The barges were quickly destroyed by the Imperial cruiser's "slightly weak" but still lethal main guns (the crew had already evacuated via emergency teleportation devices). The Imperial Fleet didn't investigate further why the "asteroids" had attacked them, seemingly categorizing them as "out-of-control automated defense facilities" or "xenos mechanical wreckage." They clearly didn't want to linger in "this worthless area." After destroying the barges, they turned their bows and accelerated toward the Warp node they came from, preparing to jump away.
"Ghost fleet requesting instructions: should we intercept or track?" the frontline Commander asked. This was an opportunity—an opportunity to test the Imperial Navy's true combat power—but the risk was immense.
Han Zhe stared at the Imperial Fleet's "standard" but somehow off-feeling retreat on the screen and fell silent for a moment. "No. Let them go. But... Ghost-7, with the highest stealth configuration, perform a maximum-distance passive tailing. Record their jump process, Warp navigation stability, and... whether there are unusual energy leaks or signs of structural stress on the hull. Remember, you must not be detected."
Ghost-7, the Human Federation's top reconnaissance ship, followed quietly like a true shadow. It recorded the Imperial Fleet's somewhat "crude" Warp entry operations and monitored the energy fluctuations and structural tremors emitted by the hulls at the moment of the jump, which were stronger than expected, as if their propulsion systems and hull structures were bearing unnecessary loads.
A few days later, Ghost-7 returned safely with a detailed analysis report. Combining the observation data from the previous engagement, providence provided a thought-provoking conclusion:
[Comprehensive analysis indicates that while the Imperial Navy reconnaissance flotilla's ships belong to standard Imperial patterns, the following anomalies exist:
1. Weapon system output efficiency is 12-18% lower than theoretical values, with slight energy transmission losses.
2. Shield generator response time and recovery efficiency show a delay of approximately 0.3-0.5 seconds, failing to meet the model's optimal parameters.
3. During conventional navigation and Warp jumps, the hull structures detected micro-stress and energy leaks higher than normal levels, suspected to be due to insufficient maintenance or material fatigue.
4. Crew operations exhibit high formulaic behavior, lacking the flexibility to deal with unexpected situations, and tactical choices lean toward conservative dogma.
Inference: Under the heavy pressure of vast territories and continuous warfare (Black Crusade, Tyranid threats, etc.), the Imperial Navy's conventional fleets in peripheral regions may generally suffer from declining equipment maintenance levels, insufficient personnel training and combat experience, and an over-reliance on standardized operating procedures while lacking tactical flexibility. Their 'paper strength' and 'actual combat power' may have a significant gap.]
The Imperial Fleet... wasn't as strong as imagined? At least, this peripheral reconnaissance fleet was.
This news caused a stir among the Human Federation's high-level leadership. For a long time, the Imperial Navy had been like a sword of Damocles, the greatest external threat and hypothetical enemy to the Human Federation's survival. Its "invincible" image was deeply rooted. Now, this first peeling piece of rust revealed an unbelievable yet traceable possibility: as massive as the Empire was, its power was not a monolith. In the endless fires of war and across its vast territories, its edge... might have been quietly worn down in some corners.
"But this is only a peripheral reconnaissance team," the Chief Technologist cautioned. "The Empire's main fleets, especially those stationed at the Cadia Gate, Segmentum Solar, and other core regions, the Astartes Chapter's battle barges, the Inquisition's Black Fleets... their combat power is by no means comparable to these scraps."
"Of course." Han Zhe nodded, the light in his eyes growing sharper. "But this is a signal. A signal that the Empire is not invincible, and that its massive body has weak links. Our wall of sighs, our fleet, our technology... perhaps, when facing direct conflict with non-mainstream Imperial units, we are not without a chance of winning."
He stood up, walked to the star map, and pointed his finger at the Ark World region shrouded in the Conceptual Fog, which was slowly growing.
"Continue to accelerate the construction of the Ark World and the wall of sighs. At the same time, based on the data obtained from this contact, update all tactical models regarding the Imperial Navy. Our goal remains unchanged: hide, develop, survive. But our mindset can change a bit."
"We are no longer just prey that can only tremble and pray not to be discovered."
"We are now... observers lurking in the shadows, assessing the hunter's strengths and weaknesses."
"The giant beast that is the Empire might still easily crush us. But its claws reaching into this periphery... we might already have the ability to snap a finger or two."
"Orders: All fleets are to strengthen targeted training, simulating engagement scenarios with standard Imperial vessels (with parameters adjusted based on the new data). The Ark World defense system is to add simulated response plans for common Imperial Navy tactics (boarding, saturation bombardment, psychic interference)."
"Next time, if the Empire's claws reach in again and threaten our core..." Han Zhe's voice was calm but carried a cold determination, "we must ensure it leaves behind some profound 'souvenirs'."
The steel of the Ark World continued to grow in silence, and the veins of the wall of sighs extended into the void. And the Human Federation, this star-bound phantom tempered in desperation, for the first time in a true sense, began to look back at that vast sea of stars belonging to the Empire—a place it once could only look up to and flee from—with a gaze of scrutiny and appraisal.
