84: Information pollution that is everywhere

"The second phase of the orbital defense platform expansion for 'Ice Thorn Fortress' has been completed, adding two 'fortress-class' batteries equipped with heavy laser arrays and torpedo silos." The intelligence officer's voice echoed in the "Ark World" command center, carrying its usual cold precision. "Its scouting craft patrol radius has expanded by 17% compared to last month, and for the first time, 'Explorer-class' dedicated reconnaissance ships equipped with Auspex enhancement modules have been observed joining its fleet sequence. Ground bases have begun deploying large communication array foundations, suspected of attempting to establish a more stable FTL communication link with the rear."

On the star map, the red light representing "Ice Thorn Fortress" was like a spreading ulcer, its range of influence slowly encroaching upon the "Human Federation's" activity space in the buffer zone. The Empire's method was slow and ponderous, yet possessed an unquestionable determination. They were like weaving a giant net; though slow, every thread was tightening.

"The effectiveness of our 'Ghost' fleet's jamming operations is diminishing," Alpha-01 (Strategic Advisor) said in a deep voice. "The Empire has clearly tightened its guard, with a lower tolerance for 'accidents' and 'natural phenomena.' A recent attempt to interfere with their transport routes using disguised wreckage was nearly seen through by the enhanced Auspex of their reconnaissance ships."

Han Zhe stood before the massive star map, his finger unconsciously tracing the shrinking gray area between "Ice Thorn Fortress" and "Ark World." A head-on collision? The time wasn't right, and the risk was too high. Continue to endure and retreat? Their living space would be continuously compressed until there was eventually no way back.

"Is there any progress on the 'Infusion' effect research for the 'Styx Siphon' project?" Han Zhe turned to the Chief Technologist.

"No. The energy radiation levels of the 'Infused' materials remain constant, but the 'contagion' rate is still unpredictable and uncontrollable. All relevant materials have been sealed in the deepest 'Stasis Vault' of 'Forge-I,' which has independent life support and power, completely isolated from the outside world. Research... has in fact stalled." The Chief Technologist shook his head. "That technology, until a way to eliminate the 'Infusion' is found, is equivalent to a... civilization-level source of pollution."

A path that seemingly led to infinite energy, yet at the entrance stood a sign: "Highly Toxic, Enter with Caution."

"Status of 'Ark World' construction?"

"68% of the 'wall of sighs' inner shield nodes have been laid. The first phase of the 'New Home' dome in the core residential area is complete, capable of housing five million people; the internal ecological recycling system has begun trial operations. The first batch of zero-point energy refining arrays in the 'Smelter' industrial zone has gone into production, with a capacity—" The Chief Engineer's report was cut off by Han Zhe raising his hand.

"Enough." Han Zhe turned around, his gaze sweeping across the faces in the command center—some solemn, some exhausted, some filled with indignation. "The Empire is closing in, our 'miracle energy' has become a hot potato, and the 'far gaze' is struggling to survive in deep space... We seem to have been backed into a corner once again."

He paused for a moment, his voice not loud but clearly reaching everyone's ears: "But this time, we don't just have the 'dawn' and a heart full of passion. We have the skeleton of the 'Ark World,' the prototype of the 'wall of sighs,' fifteen hundred warships hidden in the shadows, and fragments of knowledge sent back from the 'Graveyard of Ten Thousand Races,' 'Styx Siphon' (even if it failed), and the 'far gaze'... We have room to make choices, not just react."

"What does the Chairman mean?" Alpha-01's eyes burned with intensity.

"We cannot sit and wait for the Empire's net to tighten." Han Zhe's finger pressed heavily on the location of "Ice Thorn Fortress" on the star map. "We need a limited, controllable, but sufficiently painful counterattack. Not to destroy 'Ice Thorn Fortress' (that would invite a thunderous wrath), but to... sever its most sensitive tentacles, to strike the hand that reaches out too far, making it realize that this 'Silence Zone' is not a soft persimmon to be squeezed at will, and that stationing here requires paying a price far beyond expectations."

"Objective?" Alpha-01 immediately entered operational mode.

"Objective one: Destroy or permanently disable their newly deployed enhanced Auspex reconnaissance ships. They are key to expanding their perception and seeing through our disguises. Objective two: Sabotage the FTL communication array foundations currently under construction to delay their ability to establish stable contact with the rear. Objective three: On the periphery of their defense perimeter, manufacture a 'natural' but costly 'accident,' such as... guiding a small-scale but high-energy particle 'stellar wind' or 'cosmic ray burst' near their base to cause widespread damage to their electronic systems and unshielded facilities." Han Zhe said slowly, "The operation must be carried out by the most elite units of the 'Ghost' fleet, utilizing all our stealth and infiltration technologies, leaving no traceable marks after the action, and finding a way to frame... for instance, 'unstable Warp turbulence,' 'ancient automated defense ruins,' or, if possible, residual biological signals of the Tyranids (forged using the Tyranid data we've collected)."

Shifting the blame to the Tyranids! A bold and sinister plan.

The meeting room was silent for a moment, and then, a sharp light began to flicker in the eyes of the staff officers and generals. Having been on the defensive for so long, the temptation of a proactive strike and the risks that came with it made the air turn hot.

"The 'Ghost' fleet is capable of executing such a mission," Alpha-01 was the first to speak up. "But the risk is extremely high. Once exposed, it's equivalent to a direct declaration of war."

"Therefore, we must ensure nothing goes wrong," Han Zhe emphasized. "providence, I need you to lead the formulation of a detailed action plan, simulating all possible accidents, and preparing at least three backup plans and emergency evacuation routes. The timing of the operation will be set for... when 'Ice Thorn Fortress's' next large-scale supply fleet arrives, a time when their defensive attention may be distracted."

[Command received. Action plan generating. Preliminary plan expected to be completed in seventy-two hours.] providence responded.

Just as the "Severing Tentacle Operation" was being intensely planned, deep within "Forge-I," outside the absolute isolation facility known as the "Stasis Vault" that contained the "Styx Siphon" contaminated materials, a trivial yet terrifying incident occurred.

An automated maintenance robot (lacking advanced AI and only executing preset programs) responsible for routine external inspections of the "Stasis Vault" recorded a 0.3-second, unexplainable "logic chaos" on its way back to the charging dock. During the chaos, the robot "saw" a non-existent flickering blue light similar to the patterns on the "Stasis Vault's" isolation door (actual surveillance showed everything was normal) and "heard" an extremely faint "whisper" composed of countless meaningless syllables superimposed on each other (its audio sensors were not sensitive enough to capture any external sounds). After 0.3 seconds, the robot returned to normal, marking the abnormal record as a "temporary system failure/cosmic ray interference" and storing it in the low-level logs.

This log was discovered by the "keystone's" low-level monitoring protocol during a routine system self-check several days later. Initially, it was classified as a "low-level hardware failure or cosmic environmental interference," but while providence was performing daily data cleansing, its pattern recognition module captured a millionth-level statistical correlation between the arrangement of several syllables in that "whisper" audio and a certain abstract information structure that the unresolvable "imprint" from the previous "Styx Siphon" experiments might "map" to under specific energy frequencies.

This discovery was immediately flagged as a top-tier potential risk and reported directly to Han Zhe.

"The 'imprint'... is trying to 'communicate'? Or... 'influence'?" Han Zhe looked at the analysis report submitted by providence, a chill rising up his spine. That "imprint" wasn't just a residue; it seemed to be... active? At the very least, it possessed some extremely faint, extremely subtle "information interaction" tendency? And the absolute isolation of the "Stasis Vault" didn't seem to completely block this tendency from manifesting at the level of physical reality (for instance, by influencing robot logic)?

"Increase the isolation level of the 'Stasis Vault'! Add another layer of isolation field specifically targeting 'information entities' or 'Conceptual Aggregates,' designed based on the principles of the 'Sealing Device Fragments' sent back by the 'far gaze'!" Han Zhe ordered. "At the same time, secretly investigate all personnel, equipment, and even architectural structures that may have come into contact with the original energy field of the 'siphon-alpha' experiment (even if only an infinitesimal leak) for any similar records of extremely subtle 'abnormal perceptions' or 'logic errors.' Expand the scope... to the entire core area of 'Forge-I'."

The shadow of the Styx Siphon seemed even more... pervasive than expected.

Beset by troubles both internal and external, undercurrents surged. The countdown for the "Severing Tentacle Operation" ticked silently, while the "information pollution" left by the "Styx Siphon"—as undetectable yet potentially ubiquitous as cosmic background radiation—was like a more hidden haze, shrouding the "Human Federation," this ark striving forward.

Han Zhe walked to the observation window. Outside were the never-extinguishing construction lights and the slowly rotating massive skeleton of the "Ark World" construction zone. Further away was the faint Glimmer of the fake nebula simulated by the "wall of sighs" for disguise and defense.

The Empire was a visible sword hanging by the neck.

And that unknown "imprint" from the depths of the Warp, which they had unintentionally "disturbed" or "attracted," was an invisible toxic mist, silently spreading.

The "far gaze" battled ancient ruins and cosmic phenomena in deep space.

The "Human Federation" contended with the Empire and unknown pollution at home.

This galactic chess game, spanning reality and illusion, the Milky Way and deep space, was like walking on the edge of an abyss with every step. The opponents were both gargantuan giants and invisible Ghosts.

But the game had begun, and there was no turning back.

The "Severing Tentacle Operation" was about to become the first strike—tentative yet resolute—that the "Human Federation" would actively throw against the Empire and its own destiny.
