89: One wave subsides only for another to rise.

"The second phase of the 'Cognitive Fog' project deployment is proceeding smoothly, covering two other key resource corridors between 'Ark World' and 'Ice Thorn Fortress'." The Chief Engineer traced new gray phantom areas on the holographic star map. "The reporting frequency of abnormal signals from Imperial reconnaissance ships in these areas has dropped by 58%, and their patrol trajectories show a clear tendency to avoid them. The illusions of 'natural psionic interference zones' and 'unstable asteroid belts' simulated by providence seem to have successfully misled their navigation and perception systems."

The temporary breathing room was bought with exquisite deception. However, Han Zhe's gaze did not relax much because of it. His eyes moved past the gradually expanding 'fog zone' on the star map, casting toward the light points representing the two expeditionary fleets—one extending steadily toward the dark depths of the Extragalactic void, while the other moved cautiously through the dust and starlight of the Milky Way's spiral arms.

"The latest periodic status report from the 'Homeward Journey' fleet: It has completed its first supercluster-scale 'curvature bubble' jump. Navigation is steady, all systems are operating normally, and it has entered the periphery of the preset intergalactic medium 'Great Wall' structure," the communications officer reported. "Captain Li Mu reports that multiple 'weak points in the structure of reality' mentioned in 'The Library' data were detected during the voyage, consistent with the logs of the 'far gaze'. Coordinates and environmental data are being recorded."

"The 'Pioneer' fleet reports: It has successfully infiltrated the periphery of the target resource zone. The 'Marauder' has detected three high-value mineral deposits (rich in zero-point energy resonance crystals and rare elements required for the new alloys in 'The Library'), a suspected remnant belt of an ancient gas giant (rich in hydrogen isotopes and inert gases), and... an unrecorded, low-level carbon-based biosphere planet. Preliminary scans show an oxygenated atmosphere with primitive vegetation and simple animals, but no signs of intelligent civilization." Another intelligence officer added, "Commander Zhao Qing requests instructions: Should we proceed with the plan to establish a hidden mining outpost and conduct preliminary exploration of the biosphere planet?"

An unclaimed planet suitable for basic carbon-based life? In the resource-rich fringe of the Milky Way, this was simply an unexpected boon. Although the Human Federation had long surpassed reliance on traditional habitable planets, a ready-made 'natural laboratory' for ecological research or even future terraforming was of immense value.

"Permission granted to establish a mining outpost. Ensure absolute concealment and use Reality Weaving technology for camouflage. For the biosphere planet, dispatch a minimum-scale scientific team for non-destructive preliminary exploration to collect basic ecological samples and assess its compatibility or research value for the Human Federation's ecosystem. However, any form of colonization or large-scale interference is strictly prohibited," Han Zhe instructed. "Remember, your primary mission is resources, not establishing colonies. The operation must be fast, quiet, and clean."

Relatively smooth news came from both fleets, which slightly eased the tense atmosphere in the command center. However, this relief did not last long.

"Forge-I deep-level monitoring station, code-named 'Silent Watch', reports an anomaly." The intelligence director in charge of internal security spoke with a serious voice, pulling up a new set of data. "Continuous monitoring of the 'data fragment' incident outside the Stasis Vault has revealed a new... pattern."

Complex charts and waveforms unfolded on the holographic screen. "Since the appearance of the 'data fragment', we have strengthened monitoring of all physical and informational layers around the Stasis Vault. In the past seventy standard hours, the 'Information Entity Isolation Field' outside the Stasis Vault has recorded a total of twenty-seven extremely weak, non-natural information disturbances. These disturbances are not attempts to breach the isolation field, but rather... regular 'taps' or 'scans'. Their frequency and waveforms have a clear, progressive evolutionary connection to the encoding structure of the original 'data fragment' and the abstract syllable conversion format from the previous robot 'whispering' incident."

"Evolution?" Han Zhe's brows furrowed deeply.

"Yes. It's as if... that unknown 'imprint' or 'presence' is using these extremely hidden 'contacts' to gradually learn and adapt to the characteristics of our isolation technology, adjusting its 'infiltration' or 'interaction' methods." The intelligence director's voice carried a hint of disbelief. "Even more disturbing, we have found similar but more faint and diffuse abnormal signals in the redundant sensor networks of the Stasis Vault's outer layers, which are used to monitor background psionic and spatial disturbances. These signals do not seem to be directly targeting the Stasis Vault, but are rather like a... diffuse background 'whisper' enhancement, centered on the Stasis Vault and extremely slowly spreading to wider areas of Forge-I."

That unknown thing from the depths of the Warp was not only not isolated and suppressed, but instead seemed to be 'learning' and 'spreading' in a way that couldn't be fully understood? What was its purpose? Merely 'observation'? Or was it a prelude to some more terrifying... 'assimilation' or 'marking'?

"Is the purification protocol of the Soul Cleansing chamber effective against this kind of 'information infiltration'?" Han Zhe asked the Chief Technologist.

"Theoretically... no." The Chief Technologist shook his head, his expression grim. "The Soul Cleansing chamber targets the distortion of a living being's 'concept' by Chaos corruption. But this 'imprint'... it doesn't seem to be of a Chaos nature. It's more like a pure, highly abstract 'informational state existence' or a conceptual entity. Our isolation field can block it, but it seems unable to completely eliminate it, and might even be gradually parsed by it during the 'interaction'."

A non-Chaos, yet Warp-derived (or related) eerie 'informational entity' capable of learning and adapting to isolation technology? This was more unsettling than simple demons or Chaos corruption because it fell completely outside existing cognitive frameworks.

"Strengthen the intensity of the Information Entity Isolation Fields in all key areas, especially the Ark World core, the 'kindling' project data center, and the fleet command nodes." Han Zhe ordered, feeling a deep sense of powerlessness. Technological progress could fight visible enemies, but against this formless, quality-less 'presence' of unknown nature, they still seemed to lack effective means. "At the same time, establish a special research group, code-named 'behind the curtain', to try and find ways to understand or even counter this 'imprint' using theories from The Library regarding 'informational state life', 'conceptual entities', and cross-dimensional seals. providence, lead this research."

[Command received. Project 'behind the curtain' initiated. Warning: This research direction involves deep intervention in the underlying information structure of the universe; theoretical risks are extremely high.] providence responded.

Internal troubles were not yet settled when external threats arrived. This time, they did not come from the Empire.

"Emergency report from the 'Pioneer' fleet!" The communication channel suddenly switched, and Commander Zhao Qing's voice came through with a hint of urgency and shock. "During our preliminary orbital scan of the target biosphere planet (code-named 'Jade-II'), we detected a non-natural energy bunker and recent activity traces in an ice field on its night side! The traces show that units not belonging to us, the Empire, or any known major xenos species established a temporary camp here approximately... three to five standard months ago! The camp has been abandoned, but the residual equipment and some debris show that their technological level is not low. The style is... extremely mixed, appearing to fuse technological characteristics of multiple races, and there are clear signs of non-combat-related excavation and sampling!"

Another unknown power? Also eyeing this resource zone? Perhaps even studying that biosphere planet?

"Can you determine their identity or where they went?" Han Zhe asked immediately.

"No. The traces were cleaned professionally, leaving only the most unavoidable subtle residues. Based on energy signatures and material analysis, we have preliminarily ruled out common xenos like the Aeldari, Tau, or Necrons. In their technological style... there seem to be very faint characteristics similar to the 'bio-mechanical fusion' xenos wreckage found in the Graveyard of Ten Thousand Races, but mixed with other elements." Zhao Qing replied, "Commander, do we proceed with establishing the outpost as planned? The appearance of this unknown power increases the risk of exposure."

The plan was disrupted once again. A potential third-party power also interested in this area was a new variable with unknown intentions.

"Adjust the plan." Han Zhe made a quick decision. "Continue establishing the resource mining outpost, but choose a more hidden location and strengthen the passive monitoring network. Suspend exploration of planet 'Jade-II' and change to continuous long-distance surveillance at the highest stealth level. The main force of the 'Pioneer' fleet will temporarily withdraw to a safer hidden position to observe if there is any further activity from this power in the area. If encountered, try to avoid conflict and prioritize identifying their identity and intentions."

"Understood," Zhao Qing took the order.

One wave had not settled before another rose. The Imperial threat was temporarily obscured by the 'fog', and the deep-space rescue and resource plunder plans had just begun, yet an incomprehensible shadow of 'information penetration' had appeared internally, while new unknown peepers had emerged in the resource zones of the galaxy.

The Human Federation was like a giant ship sailing through a Thunderstorm at night. It not only had to dodge the icebergs in plain sight (the Empire) but also deal with the hidden undercurrents beneath the sea (unknown powers) and the unexplainable corrosion quietly spreading within the cabins (information penetration).

Han Zhe felt a wave of exhaustion, but even more so, a hardened resolve was stirred within him. The survival of a civilization was never smooth sailing. Challenges and accidents were the norms of the universe.

"Order the 'Homeward Journey' fleet to accelerate their progress, but they must maintain the highest level of deep-space stealth and alertness."

"Order the 'Pioneer' fleet to heighten their vigilance. Treat resource acquisition as the top priority and adopt an 'observe-avoid-identify' strategy toward the unknown power."

"Order the 'behind the curtain' project group to produce a preliminary analysis and response plan regarding the 'imprint' at all costs and as quickly as possible."

"Order the construction of 'Ark World' to proceed at full speed! We must possess an unshakeable Fortress as soon as possible to have the confidence to face all the wind and rain from within and without!"

As one order after another was issued, the massive machine of the Human Federation accelerated its operation once again. Hope and crisis, like the double helix of DNA, were tightly entwined with their destiny, pushing this ark to continue its journey filled with thorns and unknowns in an increasingly blurred and peril-filled sea of stars. The path ahead was dark, but the engines were not stalled, and the lights were not extinguished.
