76: Recovery and progress
The scale of time became blurred yet resilient in the "Forgotten Frontier," a corner forgotten by both reality and nothingness. The measurement of standard days was gradually replaced by survival cycles—how many cycles the "dewdrop" outpost had been successfully operating, how many newly repaired life-support modules in the "Forge-I" wreckage area had come online, and how many more severely wounded had passed away due to resource shortages or infections... Time flowed through blood, sweat, and cold numbers.
However, it was precisely within this near-desperate struggle, under the day-and-night high-pressure management of the "Emergency State Committee" and the almost cold efficiency optimization of providence (whose core array was slowly self-repairing), that the remaining Sparks of technology within the "Human Federation" did not extinguish. Instead, under extreme survival pressure, they burst forth with a deformed yet astonishing evolution.
The interpretation of the final prompts from the k-73 relic, combined with continuous research into the unique environment of "Spatial Folds," gave birth to a subversive theoretical breakthrough: "Zero-Point Field Resonance Energy Extraction." In traditional concepts, a vacuum is not truly "empty" but is filled with quantum fluctuations and virtual particle pairs known as the "Zero-Point Energy Field." In the relatively fragile reality structure of the "Forgotten Frontier," this field exhibited observable, periodic "resonance" phenomena at certain specific "folds" or "nodes." Scientists of the "Human Federation" (many of whom were talents with knowledge structures leaning toward basic theory, trained during the late stages of the "Spark" protocol) combined fragments of the ultimate principles regarding energy-space coupling from the "knowledge prism" with a profound understanding of "Concept Stabilization" from the K-73 "Pure Kindling" protocol to design an extremely complex and precise "Zero-Point Energy Resonance Capture and Conversion Array."
The first prototype was assembled inside the "dewdrop" fold, utilizing its unique spatial structure as a natural resonant cavity. Using salvaged wreckage materials and the surviving precision processing equipment from "Forge-I," it took four full survival cycles to barely put it together. It looked like a bizarre combination of twisted metal pipes and coils inlaid with irregular crystals.
The moment it started, everyone held their breath. There was no deafening roar, no blinding light. There was only a low hum that seemed to act directly upon space itself, and at the core of the array, a stable sphere of energy emitting a faint blue Glimmer appeared out of thin air—it wasn't burning, nor was it fission or fusion; it was drawing and converting observable, usable energy directly from the "nothingness" of the zero-point field!
"Output power... stable! Efficiency... is climbing!" The scientist in charge of monitoring spoke with a trembling voice. "We... we succeeded! Endless energy! Theoretically endless energy!"
Of course, it wasn't truly "endless." The scale of the array, the stability of the resonance points, and the wear and tear of conversion materials all limited its total output. But it meant that once enough resonance points were found and established, the "Human Federation" would completely break free from its dependence on traditional fuels and limited energy sources (such as fusion reactor fuel or solar energy)! For a fugitive civilization with extremely scarce resources, this was no different from discovering an inexhaustible spring in the desert!
The breakthrough in Zero-Point Energy technology was like the first falling domino, triggering a chain reaction. With a stable (though later proven to have extremely high maintenance costs) energy supply, many scientific research and engineering projects that had been stalled due to energy shortages were able to restart.
Materials science made progress under the extreme environments assisted by the Zero-Point Energy Field (simulating high temperature, high pressure, and strong radiation), leading to the development of "Resonance Alloy," which was lighter, stronger, and possessed a degree of self-repair capability. Based on the principles of the "Concept Disintegration Cannon" and driven by Zero-Point Energy, the new "Zero-Point Fluctuation Cannon" was developed. Its method of destroying physical targets was even more eerie, capable of triggering quantum-level resonance within the target matter, leading to structural collapse.
What was most striking was the ultimate application of "Stable Curvature Bubble" technology—"Reality Weaving." Supported by Zero-Point Energy and the ultimate principles of the "knowledge prism," and combined with in-depth research into "Spatial Folds," the top theoretical team of the "Human Federation" (with deep involvement from providence) proposed a bold vision: no longer just utilizing existing Spatial Folds, but actively "weaving" or "reinforcing" small-scale, stable, and customizable spatial structures in areas where the reality structure was fragile, using powerful energy fields and information turbulence—for example, an invisible "Pocket Space Station" with an internal space far larger than its external volume, or an extremely secretive "Short-Range Reality Channel" that only opened under specific conditions.
This was still just a theory, but it had already painted an incredible blueprint for future survival and development.
Technology progressed painfully and distortedly in the face of desperation, like a hardy poisonous vine growing in the cracks of rocks. And the population, after suffering a devastating blow, also began a restorative growth in a more cautious manner that emphasized "quality" and "adaptability."
The surviving biological cultivation modules of "Forge-I" were repaired and upgraded, and a new cultivation protocol—the "Rebirth" protocol—was launched. This time, it no longer pursued explosive numerical growth. The number of each batch was strictly controlled, and the gene pool was collected as widely as possible from the surviving naturally-born population and the "prairie fire/Spark" survivors, introducing directional adaptability optimizations based on the new environment (low gravity, specific radiation backgrounds, and Zero-Point Energy Field exposure). Neural indoctrination content also focused more on resilience, collaboration, and the cultivation of an identity and sense of mission as a "fugitive civilization." Meanwhile, natural birth was strongly encouraged, and new families were formed in the crude but relatively safe underground shelters of "Forge-I" or newly built "Fold Outposts." The cries of infants rang out again, becoming the most moving sound of hope in the midst of despair.
The population recovery was slow but steady. From one survival cycle to the next, the numbers went from twenty billion to twenty-five billion, then thirty billion... When the "Zero-Point Energy" network was initially completed, supporting more life-support and cultivation facilities, population growth began to accelerate.
Time lost its Galactic Standard meaning in the "Forgotten Frontier." Perhaps decades passed, or perhaps longer. When the "Human Federation" controlled zones (centered around the initial temporary base and connected to outposts and production bases scattered across several "Spatial Folds" and large asteroids via secretive "reality channels" and Zero-Point Energy beacons) gradually stabilized, the total population finally slowly and firmly crossed the threshold of one trillion.
One trillion! Far exceeding what it once was, this was a civilization volume rebuilt upon ruins, more resilient and with a more unique technological path. The social structure also underwent profound changes: the early "prairie fire/Spark" population, the naturally-born generation, and the new population from the "Rebirth" protocol coexisted, forming more complex and diverse social strata and cultures. Although resources remained tight and survival pressure was immense, a unique internal contribution point economic system based on contribution, professional skills, and survival necessities, as well as a set of simple laws and social norms emphasizing discipline, sacrifice, and collective survival adapted to a state of exile, had been initially established.
And military power, as the most direct guarantee of civilization's survival, also underwent a complete transformation and expansion during this process.
Most of the early remaining vessels were dismantled, their materials used to build ships better adapted to the new environment and integrated with new technologies. Ship design concepts underwent a fundamental shift: emphasizing stealth, survivability, multi-functionality of single ships, and unique tactics relying on "Reality Weaving" technology (initial application) and Zero-Point Energy.
The fleet size expanded once again, but no longer blindly pursued numbers. The newly formed "Human Federation Exile Defense Force" space fleet's main force consisted of the following series:
· "Shadow"-class multi-functional cruiser: A medium-sized vessel integrating advanced stealth systems (based on "environmentally adaptive" technology and "Reality Weaving" camouflage layers), a Zero-Point Energy core, and modular weapon stations (optionally equipped with Zero-Point Fluctuation Cannons, Concept Disintegration Cannons, heavy missiles, etc.). It is the backbone of the fleet and the most numerous.
· "Sentry-III" type high-speed frigate/destroyer: Emphasizes mobility and reconnaissance, equipped with enhanced sensors and electronic warfare suites, commonly used for patrols and forward early warnings.
· "Ark-II" type battleship: A comprehensive upgrade of the "ark-class" design concept, slightly smaller in size but more compact and powerful, equipped with a more formidable Zero-Point Energy main gun array and "Reality Stabilization" shields. It is the core of the fleet's assault force. They are rare in number, but each one is a mobile Fortress.
· Most striking of all was the newly designed "Kunpeng"-class fleet aircraft carrier! This was the culmination of "Human Federation" technology. It lacked traditional heavy armor and giant cannons; its hull was more like a massive, streamlined platform, housing vast internal hangars and production and maintenance workshops for drones and manned fighters. Its core combat power lay in the hundreds of "Falcon" space fighters (integrating miniaturized Zero-Point Energy engines and light wave weapons) and "Swarm" intelligent attack drones it carried. The carrier itself possessed a powerful Zero-Point Energy supply, a CIC (Command and Control) system, and temporary "frontline airfields" or "maintenance platforms" that could be rapidly deployed using "Reality Weaving" technology. Its appearance completely changed the tactical system of the "Human Federation" navy, making beyond-visual-range strikes, saturated drone attacks, and highly flexible battlefield situation control possible.
Under the guidance of a quality-over-quantity approach, the total fleet size steadily recovered and surpassed pre-exile levels, reaching a scale of over 1,200 combat vessels of various types. This included six "Kunpeng"-class carriers, fifteen "Ark-II" battleships, and a large number of "Shadow"-class and "Sentry-III" ships. All vessels integrated Zero-Point Energy systems (at least as auxiliary power) and basic "Reality Stabilization" fields.
This fleet was no longer for conquest or large-scale expansion, but for survival, stealth, and responding to the Empire or other threats that might hunt them here. They were scattered around the various "folds" and secret bases controlled by the "Human Federation," like a pack of predators lurking in the dark deep sea, their fangs retracted but deadly.
Han Zhe stood on the broad command bridge of the newly launched lead ship of the "Kunpeng"-class—the "northern darkness." From the bridge, he could overlook the entire flight deck. Outside the window was the internal scene of a medium-sized Spatial Fold serving as the "northern darkness's" home port, reinforced and camouflaged through initial "Reality Weaving." Artificial sunlight (simulated by Zero-Point Energy) fell softly upon the orderly port facilities and other docked ships. In the distance were the eternally frozen, resource-rich ice layers on the "walls" of the fold.
His hair was now white, but his gaze remained as sharp as ever. Beside him, Alpha-01 (now the Commander-in-Chief of the Exile Defense Force) and other high-ranking generals also bore the deep marks left by time and countless struggles on the edge of life and death.
"We survived," Han Zhe spoke slowly, his voice calm yet containing immense power. "From the Emperor's Exterminatus Order, from the corpses of forty billion compatriots, from this desolate land where even starlight is stingy, we survived, and... we have stood up once again."
"We have a new energy source, a new home (albeit a broken one), a new fleet, and a trillion resilient people." He turned around to look at his generals. "But do not forget, hanging over our heads is the Emperor's eternal kill order. The 'Forgotten Frontier' beneath our feet is by no means a paradise. The 'hidden dangers' warned of by K-73 before its slumber have not yet been fully explored. We cannot afford the slightest negligence."
"Commander-in-Chief," Han Zhe looked at Alpha-01, "what is the status of fleet training and combat readiness?"
"Always on the highest alert, Chairman," Alpha-01 responded, standing at attention. "The integration of new ships and tactics is basically complete. The 'Ghost' reconnaissance network now covers a five-light-year radius around the controlled zone, and a multi-layered early warning system has been established. We are like a hedgehog, curled up here, but every quill is dipped in poison."
"Very good." Han Zhe nodded. "Scientific research must not stop, especially the deepening application of 'Reality Weaving' and Zero-Point Energy. We must truly turn this 'frontier' into our 'Fortress' and 'hunting ground.' Meanwhile... the Social Integration Department must continue to strengthen the education of the new generation of citizens, making them remember where we came from, what we are fighting for, and... where we must go."
He looked out the window again at that piece of void, modified and still desolate, yet lit with the fires of civilization.
A trillion people, one thousand two hundred warships, six aircraft carriers, endless Zero-Point Energy, and secretive technology unique in the galaxy.
The Human Restoration Alliance has not perished.
It has merely moved to a darker, more cruel stage, and has quietly set up a more deadly and unpredictable chess game.
The Emperor's gaze may eventually descend again, and other threats may arrive unexpectedly.
But this time, the "Human Federation" is no longer that prey that can only flee in despair.
It is a predator that has sharpened its fangs in desperation, learned to survive in the shadows, and has quietly woven an invisible net... a Ghost of the starry sky.
