72: Empire Planet

The torrent of time carried the increasingly massive ark of the "Human Federation" forward through the sea of stars. The fires of the "Spark" protocol continued to burn in "Forge-I" and the newly built biological cultivation centers (distributed across "Glimmer," "Nether Abyss," and several large orbital stations), and the energy they released—new life—accumulated in a near-geometric progression.

The cry of the first naturally born infant was like spring thunder, awakening an instinct deeply rooted in the genetic makeup of the "Human Federation's" society. Although the "prairie fire" and "Spark" populations still made up the absolute majority, and new cultivation batches were constantly coming "off the line," the trickling stream of natural births had already begun to merge into the river of population. The incentive policies formulated by the Social Integration Department, the perfected childcare system, and the promotion of family values led more and more of the "prairie fire/Spark generation" to start trying to form families and welcome new lives. This population growth model, where "manufactured" and "natural" coexisted, brought unprecedented complexity and vitality, while also placing higher demands on social management.

Under the guidance of the "knowledge prism" and the cold, efficient scheduling of providence, the industrial machinery of the "Human Federation" roared with unprecedented efficiency. Resources were continuously mined, refined, and transported from various star systems, asteroid belts, and the moons of gas giants. Newly built giant orbital shipyards (some even built directly onto captured and modified asteroids) dotted the key nodes of the "Human Federation's" controlled territory like stars.

Then, on a standard day marked as "Milestone Day," an exciting signal came from the "Abyss Foundry" in synchronous orbit above the ice planet "Nether Abyss."

["The first ark-class ship, codenamed 'Dawn Bringer,' has been completed. All systems have passed self-check."] The voice of providence announced calmly, but in the neural interfaces of all recipients, it felt as if a mental shock bomb had been dropped.

"ark-class"! A true battleship designed based on the highest-level engineering principles of the "knowledge prism," integrating the "Stable Curvature Bubble" cruise system, "Concept Stabilization" enhanced shields and armor, a modular heavy weapons platform (with a triple-mounted "Corona-Modified" ultra-heavy plasma projector as the main gun, and reserved interfaces for "Concept Disintegration Cannon" arrays), as well as a massive internal hangar and marine deployment capabilities! Its size and tonnage far exceeded the "dawn-class," and it was even enough to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the Imperial Navy's older battleships!

In the holographic image, the "Dawn Bringer" slowly slid out of the shipyard. It no longer had the relatively "slender" streamlined feel of the "dawn" or the "dawn-class," but instead presented a heavy, solid, and majestic presence like a mobile Fortress. The thick armor plates were covered with a special coating that absorbed radiation and energy, the hull lines were rigid, and multiple turrets and missile silos protruded like the fangs of a giant beast. The three massive main gun barrels at the bow, even in their dormant state, exuded a heart-palpitating sense of pressure.

"The 'Dawn Bringer' has officially joined the 'Blade' fleet!" Han Zhe's voice spread through the wide-area communication channel to every corner of the "Human Federation's" controlled territory. "This is not just the launching of a new ship, but a sign that the 'Human Federation's' industrial and technological power has reached a new height! It will become the sword and shield with which we defend our home and Pioneer the future!"

The commander of the "Blade" fleet (with the assistance of providence) spoke with irrepressible excitement: "All officers and soldiers of the 'Blade' fleet will surely live up to our mission!"

The success of the "Dawn Bringer" was like opening a floodgate. Following closely behind, the second ark-class ship, "Twilight Watcher," and the third, "Light of Dawn" (planned to join the First Fleet), also completed their main construction in the shipyards of "Forge-I" and "Glimmer" orbit, entering the outfitting stage. More "dawn-class" improved models, "Hammer-class," "Blade-class," and various other vessels sailed out of the shipyards like dumplings being dropped into water, quickly filling the ranks of each fleet.

The scale of the "Human Federation Defense Force" space fleet continued to expand frantically from its base of "six hundred ships," soon breaking through eight hundred, nine hundred... and moving toward four digits. New sub-fleets were formed, responsible for more peripheral patrols, resource point defense, and the pioneering of new colonies.

And the territory expanded at an incredible speed along with it.

"Joint reconnaissance report from the 'Pioneer' and 'Harbinger' fleets," Alpha-01 pointed to the greatly updated star map at the military committee meeting. "In the sector extending about two hundred light-years out from the 'Glimmer' system, we have newly discovered seven resource-rich uninhabited star systems (rich in various rare minerals and gases), four terrestrial planets with terraforming potential (the environments are harsher than 'Glimmer' was initially, but technology is advancing), and... the signs of entrances to two relatively stable secondary Warp corridors that are not completely controlled by the Imperium or Chaos."

Warp corridors! Even if they were only secondary and unstable, it meant a huge increase in strategic mobility! They could connect future colonies faster and even... serve as potential, hidden paths to other areas of the galaxy.

"Immediately establish hidden monitoring outposts and navigation beacons (using our technology for camouflage) near the corridor entrances. For the resource systems, establish automated mining stations as planned, protected by nearby fleet detachments," Han Zhe instructed. "For those four terrestrial planets, conduct detailed surveys to assess terraforming priority and required resources."

The tentacles of expansion were like vines, quietly extending and taking root in the dark starry sky. The controlled territory rapidly expanded from a relatively compact "Core Three-Star System Belt" into a small star sector over four hundred light-years in diameter, containing dozens of star systems and hundreds of resource points and asteroid bases. Although most areas were still empty, with only scattered outposts and mining facilities, the flag of the "Human Federation" (crossed swords and gears, surrounding stars and flames) had truly been planted upon this vast expanse of space.

The explosive population growth, the launching of battleships, the rapid expansion of territory... everything seemed to be racing in the most ideal direction. However, in the midst of this surging tide of progress, a deep-space reconnaissance team from the "Ghost" special fleet sent back a report that instantly cooled all the fervor.

"'Shade-Deep Diver-03' squad, while scouting potential safe paths on the periphery of the second Warp corridor, detected strong, clearly characterized Imperial signals about zero point five light-years off the flank of the planned route." The voice of the reconnaissance captain (an elite transferred from Alpha Squad) tightened over the encrypted channel. "It's not a fleet, but... a planet. There are stable signs of civilized activity: city lights (on the night side), aircraft trails within the atmosphere, orbital defense platforms, and... a clear, uncamouflaged broadcast signal with the Aquila emblem."

An Imperial planet! A living human world under Imperial rule, right on the flank of their expansion path, and so close!

The report included processed images: a terrestrial planet with blue oceans and green continents, with several familiar-looking Imperial space stations floating in its orbit and grid-like city lights visible on the surface. All signs indicated that this was at least a Civilised World, or perhaps even on the edge of being a Hive World, with a significant population and industrial base, and clearly under effective Imperial jurisdiction.

"Attempting planet identification..." 'keystone' quickly compared the database (though data on specific Imperial planets was extremely scarce). "Based on its star type, planetary position, and rough continental outlines, there is a 67% match with a planet labeled as 'Katarina' in an extremely ancient star map fragment of unknown origin. In the fragment's records, this planet was marked as an 'Agricultural and Light Industrial World' belonging to the edge of the Segmentum Obscurus."

A planet directly under Imperial jurisdiction, potentially home to hundreds of millions or even billions of people! Right under their noses!

The atmosphere of the Steering Committee instantly dropped to the freezing point. The previous Imperial Fleet had just been passersby, but this time, it was a rooted, massive Imperial stronghold. Their expansion had already touched the borders of the Imperium's territory.

"Distance? Has the other side detected our reconnaissance activities?" Han Zhe asked in a heavy voice.

"The distance is about zero point five light-years, still at the edge of the effective detection range for conventional sub-light sensors. Our reconnaissance squad is maintaining a silent observation at the maximum distance and has not been discovered. However, the planet's orbital defense platforms are active and perform regular scans. It is unknown whether they possess longer-range detection means (such as psychic early warning or deep-space listening arrays)."

"Immediately recall all reconnaissance units and stay away from that area. The 'Ghost' fleet is to strengthen electronic silence and false signal cover in that direction." Han Zhe quickly ordered. "providence, analyze the risks and... opportunities that contact with this Imperial planet might bring."

[Risk Analysis:

1. Risk of Direct Conflict: If our activities (especially large-scale fleet movements or colony construction) are discovered, it is highly likely to trigger an active attack from the Imperial Navy or local PDF (Planetary Defence Force), and could even draw the attention of the Inquisition or the Astartes Chapter.

2. Risk of Intelligence Exposure: The planet may possess stable communication methods (Astropaths, Warp communication) with the core areas of the Imperium. Once our existence and some of our technological characteristics are reported, it will trigger alertness and targeted actions at a higher level of the Imperium.

3. Risk of Strategic Squeezing: This planet is like a wedge driven into our expansion path. Its existence will severely limit our development space in that direction and could become an outpost for the Imperium to penetrate our core area in the future.

Opportunity Analysis (High Risk):

1. Source of Intelligence: Close observation of a normally functioning Imperial world can provide first-hand intelligence on the Imperium's social structure, technological level, and military deployment.

2. Potential Trade or Infiltration (Extremely Dangerous): If an extremely hidden contact channel can be established, it might be possible to conduct limited barter trade (to exchange for special materials we lack) or even attempt to infiltrate its society to obtain deeper information.

3. Crisis Diversion: If Chaos or other forces threaten the planet, the Imperium's attention will be drawn away, potentially creating opportunities for our activities in other directions.]

The risks far outweighed the opportunities. But ignoring its existence was equally dangerous.

"We are not yet ready for a direct conflict with the Imperium, let alone attacking a planet with a complete defense system," Han Zhe said slowly. "But we also cannot allow this potential threat to hang over our heads. Adjust the direction of expansion and temporarily avoid the sector where the planet 'Katarina' is located. Establish a multi-layered, deep defense and early warning network in that direction. The 'Ghost' fleet will be responsible for long-term, ultra-long-distance hidden monitoring of the planet, recording every detail of its ship movements, communication patterns, and rotation of defensive forces."

"In addition," a sharp glint flashed in Han Zhe's eyes, "the Social Integration Department is to secretly launch a study: analyze the potential social contradictions of Imperial worlds like 'Katarina,' the true attitude of the populace toward Imperial rule (based on limited historical records and general human nature deductions), and... the theoretical possibility of conducting 'ideological infiltration' or 'non-military influence' in extreme circumstances (such as a collapse of Imperial rule or immense external pressure). Remember, this is only a theoretical deduction; any actual actions are strictly prohibited!"

"Understood!" everyone responded. The discovery of an Imperial planet brought not excitement, but heavy pressure. It meant that the "Human Federation's" "comfortable expansion period" might be coming to an end. They had to be even more cautious, continuing to grow and develop right under the Imperium's nose while avoiding that fatal thunderbolt.

The pulse of sixty billion people (with the final goal of the "Spark" protocol nearing completion) throbbed within the star sector controlled by the "Human Federation." The newly launched "ark-class" battleships were undergoing final debugging next to the shipyards. The vast new territory required assimilation and construction.

However, at the edge of the star map, that blue planet named "Katarina" was like a silent alarm bell, constantly reminding the founders of the "Human Federation" that although the galaxy is large, the influence of the Imperium of Man is everywhere. Their path to "restoration" was destined to have unavoidable intersections and friction with this ancient and massive giant.

Whether it was a blessing or a curse remained to be seen. But the "Human Federation," this giant ship already equipped with heavy armor and powerful cannons, had to adjust its course and continue its journey full of unknowns and challenges on the edge of the shadow of the Imperium's territory.
