42: Listen

Alpha Squad returned to the base, dragging a mangled left leg and damaged armor, carrying the lingering shock of a near-death escape. The platform was a scene of intense activity; medical units and maintenance mechanical arms were already in position, their warning lights flashing. Han Zhe stood outside the observation window of the isolation zone, watching as Alpha-04 was carefully removed from the severely damaged armor—the part below the left calf was in a bizarre state of molten atrophy, as if acted upon by both high temperatures and strong acid. The skin and muscle tissue were almost fused to the armor lining, a gruesome sight. The young clone soldier's face was pale, cold sweat beaded on his forehead, but he gritted his teeth and did not let out a single groan of pain.

The other three team members also had varying degrees of energy burns and impact bruises, but compared to 04's injuries, they were considered minor. They silently assisted the medical units, their eyes occasionally glancing at Han Zhe outside the observation window. Their expressions were complex, filled with self-reproach for failing to complete the mission effectively and lingering fear of the unknown danger.

“'keystone,' put everything into treating Alpha-04, regardless of the resource cost. Assess the other members' injuries and ensure a full recovery.” Han Zhe's voice reached the medical area through the communicator, steady and carrying an unquestionable authority. “You all did well. When facing unpredictable danger, decisive withdrawal is the top priority. Submit the mission report later.”

“Yes, Commander,” Alpha-01 responded on behalf of the squad, his voice a bit raspy.

Han Zhe turned and left the observation window without offering any more words of comfort. Comfort belonged to an era of peace; here, surviving and restoring combat effectiveness was the best possible outcome. What he needed was data, analysis, and to figure out exactly what that thing was that had nearly wiped them out.

“'pioneer-01,' I need the analysis report on the continuous monitoring data from the energy eruption point.” He walked quickly back to the command center and pulled up the relevant monitoring data streams.

“The target energy eruption lasted for approximately forty-seven minutes before gradually weakening; it is currently in a state of low-intensity leakage. The total energy released during the eruption was extremely high. Nature of the analysis: a mixture of high-intensity plasma, unknown highly corrosive particle streams, and... a faint 'Reality Distortion' effect associated with Warp disturbances was detected. It was precisely this 'Reality Distortion' effect that drastically lowered the phase transition melting point and structural strength of the Pseudo-Tao Steel Alloy, leading to its abnormally rapid meltdown.” The keystone adjutant's voice was accompanied by detailed data charts and simulation animations. “The energy source is speculated to be located in the deepest part of the Wreckage Mountain, possibly linked to an ancient energy or weapon core that is not fully destroyed or is in an unstable state, or... some high-risk substance with Warp contamination that has been sealed for a long time. This eruption may have been triggered by pressure changes or a brief connection of energy circuits caused by the opening of the hatch.”

Warp contamination? Reality Distortion effect?

Han Zhe's heart sank. This was far more troublesome than simple physical or energy hazards. The Warp was a realm of chaos, where the 'rules' were completely different from the material universe, capable of twisting reality, eroding matter, and corrupting souls. His 'Global Shield Field' could interfere with Warp ripples and psionic detection, but it was unknown how much effect the shield field would have against this kind of Energy Slurry with Reality Distortion effects erupting directly from the material level.

Even more troubling was whether this contamination would spread. Would it attract even more troublesome things, such as demons or entities extremely sensitive to the Warp?

“Assess the potential threat of this energy leak point to our base. Can the shield field effectively block or weaken its influence? Is it possible for the leak to intensify or trigger a chain reaction?” Han Zhe pressed further.

“Based on the current leakage intensity and distance (approximately twelve kilometers), the regular operating mode of the 'Basic Global Shield Field' can significantly weaken its energy radiation and any potential Warp information contamination, but it cannot completely eliminate its physical corrosiveness and Reality Distortion field. Threat Level: Medium (relatively safe within the shield field, but unwise to approach). The structure of the leak point itself is extremely unstable; there is a possibility of a larger-scale eruption or even an explosion due to continued internal energy imbalance, with the probability increasing over time and with unknown internal changes. Chain reaction risk: Exists, but cannot be quantified.”

An unstable energy bomb with Warp contamination attributes was buried just twelve kilometers away. Although temporarily separated by the shield field, it was like sleeping with a landmine that could go off at any moment.

Deal with it directly? With the base's current strength, even getting close was dangerous, let alone going deep into its source to dismantle or seal it. Leave it alone? The risk was uncontrollable.

A dilemma.

Han Zhe rubbed his brow. What Alpha Squad had brought back at the risk of their lives, besides casualties and warnings, seemed to be only more unknowns and risks. The data storage fragments collected from near the Wreckage Mountain peak and the hatch were being urgently parsed, but the probability of finding a way to deal with this Energy Slurry inside was slim.

He needed more information. Not just about that leak point, but about this wreckage belt, other potential dangers, the speculated 'Anomalous Gravity Well/rift,' and even the broader star sector. Passively waiting for danger to arrive or running around like a headless fly was too costly.

Information had to be collected actively, systematically, and safely.

“'keystone,'” Han Zhe looked up, the light of decisiveness refocusing in his eyes, “design a dedicated, high-stealth deep space information collection device, codename: 'Truth Listener.' Requirements: long-range, multi-spectral passive signal reception and analysis capabilities (electromagnetic waves, neutrinos, gravitational wave anomalies, low-intensity Warp ripples, etc.); equipped with a high-precision telescope and spectrometer for optical observation; integrated basic matter analysis sensors to scan the composition of small objects floating nearby (dust, ice crystals, metal scraps); must have a degree of autonomous maneuverability and orbital adjustment capability to expand the monitoring range and evade danger; and most importantly—absolute stealth, with extremely low signal transmission power, ideally only performing passive reception and data storage, returning to base periodically or upon command to transfer data, or using quantum encrypted directional transmission that is extremely difficult to intercept.”

He was going to create a batch of 'eyes' and 'ears' to scatter into the surrounding starry sky, weaving an invisible intelligence network. No longer would he rely on the clumsy close-range exploration of SCVs or risk sending soldiers into dangerous areas.

“Command confirmed. Conceptual design for the 'Truth Listener' deep space information collector initiated. Integrating existing sensor technology, micro-thrusters, high-efficiency energy (considering small 'Cold Fusion' batteries), and low-observability design concepts from 'Global Shield' technology...” keystone quickly entered a working state.

“Preliminary plan generated: 'Truth Listener-I' information collection platform (prototype).

· Form: Small disc or cross-shaped, approximately one meter in diameter and zero point three meters thick.

· Energy: Built-in micro 'Cold Fusion' battery (requires solving miniaturization challenges), estimated continuous operation time: 1-2 standard years (low-power mode).

· Sensor Suite: Multi-band passive receiving array, high-resolution optical/infrared telescope, basic mass spectrometer, Warp background noise monitoring unit.

· Maneuverability: Micro-ion thruster clusters, capable of limited velocity changes and orbital adjustments.

· Communication: Primarily relies on periodic returns to base or preset relay points for physical data exchange. Backup plan: extremely low-power quantum encrypted pulses (only for emergency states or critical information return, with long transmission intervals, high directionality, and low probability of interception).

· Stealth: The outer shell uses wave-absorbing/refractive composite materials, and the shape design reduces the radar cross-section. The operating mode is primarily passive reception, with extremely low energy fluctuations.

【Construction requirements per unit (estimated):

· Resource Points: 600 points (high cost for miniaturized precision components).

· Special Materials: Wave-absorbing composite materials, micro-superconducting coils, high-purity optical lenses.

· Energy: 4 units (for precision machining and system infusion).

· Time: 5 standard hours per unit.

· Estimated initial production quantity: 4-6 units to form a preliminary monitoring network.】

Six hundred points per unit, thirty-six hundred points for the first batch of six! Another huge sum. But compared to the potential disasters avoided and the new resources or opportunities discovered, this investment was worth it.

“Approve the design and manufacturing plan for the 'Truth Listener-I.' Build four units for the first batch as verification and for preliminary networking. Temporarily divert resource points from the 'Blaze' upgrade plan reserves, but ensure it does not affect the core material reserves for the energy upgrade.” Han Zhe made a trade-off. Information was the foundation of decision-making; in an environment where the situation was unclear, intelligence priority had to be raised.

“Command confirmed. 'Truth Listener' project initiated. Resources being allocated. Manufacturing sequence for the first four units established.”

The refining core adjusted its production plan once again, beginning to synthesize the special materials and miniaturized precision components needed for the 'Truth Listener.' This was a task that required even finer craftsmanship than manufacturing 'Sentry' units or cmc armor.

While waiting for the 'Truth Listener' prototypes to be manufactured, Han Zhe did not remain idle. Alpha-04's condition stabilized with the input of advanced medical resources, but bionic limbs or biological regeneration would take time; he would not be able to return to the battlefield in the short term. Alpha Squad was temporarily reduced to three members.

“Alpha-01, 02, 03,” Han Zhe gathered the three members who were in good condition at the command center, “04 needs time to recover. But our mission will not stop. Until the 'Truth Listener' network is established and provides us with a clearer external view, internal security and construction of the base cannot be relaxed.”

He pulled up a detailed structural diagram of the base.

“Your new tasks: First, lead the 'Sentry' units in conducting regular, more detailed inspections and maintenance of all key facilities on the platform (Fusion Reactor, refining core, cradle of life, command center, shield field generators), and establish complete maintenance logs and emergency plans. Second, utilize the integrated training grounds to begin tactical reorganization and adaptability training for the squad's reduced state, exploring efficient combat modes for a three-man team. Third, assist the 'Pioneer' squad in conducting more thorough flaw detection and reinforcement assessments of the platform's structure, especially in those early-built areas that may have hidden hazards. We need a more solid, impregnable Fortress.”

“Yes, Commander!” the three members responded in unison, their fighting spirit reignited. The blow of losing a comrade needed action to fade, and shouldering more important responsibilities was the best way to do so.

“'keystone,' synchronize the base defense deployment and patrol routes to adapt to Alpha Squad's temporary reduction. Optimize the 'Sentry' units' alert algorithms to compensate for the manpower shortage.”

“Command confirmed. Defense plan being adjusted.”

A few more days passed amid the intense internal adjustments, construction, and training at the base.

The first prototype of the 'Truth Listener-I' was finally assembled in the refining core's precision workshop. It was a dark grey disc-shaped object, one meter in diameter and about thirty centimeters thick, with a smooth surface and subtle honeycomb-like structures that seemed to absorb light. Around the edge was a ring of almost invisible micro-thruster nozzles, and at the center was an integrated composite sensor array. It hovered silently on the test rack, like a silent, high-tech black frisbee.

“'Truth Listener-01' assembly complete. Initiating self-check... Sensor calibration... Thruster test... Energy system online... Stealth mode activated... Self-check passed, status: Standby.”

“Good.” Han Zhe looked at the test data. “Prepare for launch. Target orbit: a circular orbit centered on the base with a radius of fifty to one hundred kilometers, with the orbital plane covering the main areas of the wreckage belt and the direction of the speculated 'Anomalous Gravity Well' as much as possible. The four 'Truth Listeners' will be launched in batches to construct a cross-monitoring network. After launch, they will enter full passive monitoring mode and perform periodic orbital fine-tuning according to preset programs to avoid being hit by debris. The data storage cycle is set to thirty standard days; after thirty days, they will be awakened in sequence to attempt to establish a very short-duration, low-power quantum encrypted link with the base to transmit data.”

“Command confirmed. 'Truth Listener-01' launch sequence initiated. Launch platform preparing...”

At the edge of the platform, a temporarily constructed small electromagnetic catapult track adjusted its angle. 'Truth Listener-01' was secured to the launch rack. As the countdown ended, after a low hum, the disc-shaped probe was accelerated out, turning into an almost invisible trajectory as it vanished silently into deep space.

Following that, 'Truth Listener-02,' '03,' and '04' were also launched in sequence, disappearing into the starry background according to their different preset orbital parameters.

Four silent 'eyes' were thus scattered out.

They would not actively search; they would only quietly 'listen' and silently 'watch,' recording the most subtle electromagnetic whispers, the most distant shifts of light and shadow, and the most hidden ripples of space itself in this star sector.

Han Zhe stood at the observation port, watching the light of the last 'Truth Listener' disappear. The anxiety caused by the unknown danger seemed to be replaced by a calmer, more controlled sense of expectation.

He could not predict what the 'Truth Listeners' would bring back. Perhaps it would be warnings of more potential dangers, clues to valuable resource points, traces of other civilizations, or perhaps... nothing at all.

But at least, he was no longer passively waiting for the storm to arrive.

He had begun to weave his own net to capture the silently flowing information in this dark forest.

And information was power, the chips for survival, and... the first blurred map leading to the future.

Below the platform, within the 'cradle of life,' the indicator lights for the beta batch flashed steadily.

Above the platform, the Fusion Reactor hummed stably, and the refining core's faint light flowed.

In deep space, the four 'Truth Listeners' quietly took their positions, beginning their long and silent vigil.

The base, after experiencing a setback and risk, continued its lonely and determined path of evolution in a more restrained and systematic manner.
