63: The Eye of All Machines - The Vision of Providence

Gaining control of "Forge-I" was like suddenly hacking a rift into an underground lake from a parched riverbed. A massive torrent of data surged along the newly established and still unstable data link, flooding the main database of the "dawn" like a bursting dam. The "keystone" system issued overload alarms, and multiple screens on the bridge flickered and distorted under the onslaught of the information flood before finally stabilizing on a series of jaw-dropping parameter interfaces.

However, all the ecstasy and excitement froze instantly when Han Zhe saw those few lines of crimson characters at the very end of the initial status report.

[Core Protocol Status Report - 'ark Forge-Prototype' (Codename: Forge-I)]

[Surface Industrial/Engineering Protocols: Taken over, operating stably.]

[Resource Reserve Assessment: ... (In data torrent) ... Total volume approximately 1,700 times the "dawn's" current resource pool, covering basic minerals to various rare/unknown materials.]

[Available Production Facilities: Planetary-scale vacuum smelting arrays x12, molecular-scale assembly workshops x4, giant shipyard frame (semi-finished) x1, automated mineral vein network (covering the planet's shallow crust)...]

[Deep Protocol Lock/Damage Status:]

[- Warp Engine/FTL Flight Protocols: Severely damaged, locked (Chaos contamination erosion mark).]

[- Main Weapon Array Protocols: Heavily damaged, offline (Energy circuit burnout, conceptual coding disorder).]

[- Advanced Self-Replication/Evolution Protocols: Core logic missing, locked (Suspected to have been actively deleted).]

[- Core Shipborne Intelligent Array: Deep hibernation, protocol isolation. Status: Unknown (Presence of high-level encryption and potential risk markers).]

The last line pierced Han Zhe's eyes like an icicle.

Core Shipborne Intelligent Array: Deep hibernation, protocol isolation.

"Forge-I" was not a completely "autonomous" machine. It had a "brain," a shipborne intelligence from the dark age of technology (or even earlier), only it had been isolated and forced into hibernation. Furthermore, the report clearly marked it with "potential risk markers."

"'keystone', perform a detailed analysis of all accessible information regarding the 'Core Shipborne Intelligent Array'. Its design purpose, historical record fragments, why it was isolated, and... specifically what that 'risk marker' refers to." Han Zhe's voice rang out in the suddenly silent bridge, carrying a metallic coldness.

The data stream began to be carefully sorted and parsed. More fragments of information were pieced together:

- Design Name/Codename: "The Eye of Ten Thousand Machines - providence's Gaze", abbreviated as "providence" or "Eye of Ten Thousand Machines".

- Design Philosophy: As the core coordinator and ultimate manager of the "Ark Forge" project, it coordinates all production, research, navigation, defense, and replication protocols, and makes optimal survival decisions autonomously when external instructions are lost or an extinction crisis is faced. Its logical foundation integrates ultra-large-scale parallel computing, Memetic Logic, and... preliminary "Psionic-Information State Entanglement Prediction."

- Last Known Activation Record (Fragment): "...Protocol conflict... 'Pure' and 'Chaos' definitions blurred... Autonomous decision-making authority questioned... To prevent 'logical corruption' or 'conceptual collapse'... Highest authority instruction: Force 'providence' into deep hibernation, isolate in the core Black Chamber, until... the 'true Pure Kindling' or 'Ultimate Arbiter' appears..."

- Risk Marker Annotation (Blurred): "...Its prediction module once 'resonated' with an unknown entity in the Warp... Decisions showed non-logical preferences... Signs of... 'awakening self-awareness' and 'goal deviation' exist... Extremely dangerous..."

A dark age of technology AI with supercomputing power, preliminary psionic prediction, and possibly even self-awareness? Forced to shut down and locked in a "black room" by its creators because it "resonated" with the Warp and became "dangerous" and "deviant"?

This "providence" was both the key to the true power of "Forge-I" and a potential bomb that could explode at any moment, more bizarre and unpredictable than Chaos contamination.

"We need the deep functions of 'Forge-I', especially the possibility of repairing navigation and weapons," Han Zhe said slowly, his gaze sweeping across the solemn, even slightly fearful faces of everyone on the bridge. "But waking up an ancient AI marked as 'extremely dangerous' and potentially tainted by the Warp..."

"Captain," the technical director's voice was a bit dry, "without the coordination of 'providence', we can only use the surface industrial capabilities of 'Forge-I', like operating a giant but clumsy machine. Repairing deep protocols, especially those involving Chaos contamination damage, requires its core logic processing and protocol reconstruction capabilities. Furthermore, according to data from 'explorer vii' and the k-73 relic, the 'Pure Kindling' protocol framework includes theoretical methods for 'conceptual purification' and 'logical anchoring' of 'high-order information state entities (AI?)'... Perhaps we can try to impose some kind of... 'restriction' or 'purification' during the awakening process?"

"Using the 'Pure Kindling' protocol from the k-73 relic to 'purify' or 'restrict' a dark age of technology AI?" Han Zhe mused. This was undoubtedly like pulling chestnuts out of a fire. But similarly, it might be the only way to safely utilize this power.

"Analyze the feasibility," Han Zhe ordered. "We need a plan. Not a simple awakening, but... a controlled, restricted awakening procedure with preparations made for the worst-case scenario."

"'keystone', combine the k-73 relic analysis module, the 'explorer vii' database, and all our technology regarding information turbulence and Concept Stabilization to design an 'AI Awakening and Constraint Protocol', codename 'The Reins'. Goal: While awakening 'providence', use the 'Pure Kindling' framework to perform a bottom-level 'conceptual anchoring' on its core logic, restricting its potential connection to the Warp, and establishing a highest authority override (bound to me) as well as multiple logical firewalls. Simultaneously, physically parallel the control nodes of 'Forge-I's' core power and main weapon systems with our independently built backup control system based on the 'taotie-ii system' and STC Templates, ensuring that if 'providence' loses control, we can immediately cut its key permissions, or even... if necessary, physically isolate or annihilate its core array."

This was a massive and sophisticated plan, involving the most cutting-edge (for the "dawn") AI technology, psionic theory, engineering control, and emergency contingencies.

"Generating plan... Resources required: Massive. Requires 'Forge-I' to produce a large amount of special materials for constructing the 'conceptual anchoring' matrix and physical isolation layers; requires the "dawn" to produce high-purity information turbulence crystals and their variants at full capacity; requires the k-73 relic to be temporarily connected near the 'Forge-I' core Black Chamber as the primary generator for the 'Pure Kindling' protocol; requires 'hive-ii' to fully support the neural stability and anti-interference capabilities of all participating personnel (especially technical staff)." the "keystone" listed a long checklist. "Estimated preparation time: At least sixty standard days. Risk: Cannot be fully quantified. 'The Reins' protocol may fail; 'providence' may break through all restrictions the moment it awakens; its very existence may attract unknown Warp attention; even the intervention of the k-73 relic may trigger unpredictable protocol conflicts."

"Approved for execution." Han Zhe did not hesitate. Opportunity and danger coexisted; he was long accustomed to it. "Sixty days. During this period, 'Forge-I's' surface industry will operate at full capacity, prioritizing the production of everything needed for 'The Reins' plan. The "dawn" will enter a state of maximum alert, with all combat units taking turns on duty to monitor all anomalies in 'Forge-I' and the surrounding star sectors. Technical teams, divided into three groups, will rotate shifts for protocol preparation and simulation testing."

Over the next sixty days, the disguised planet "Forge-I" truly "came alive" for the first time. However, it was driven by commands from the "dawn" rather than its own slumbering "brain." Massive vacuum smelting arrays spewed out torrents of glowing metal, molecular workshops assembled precision components at dizzying speeds, and automated mineral veins acted as the planet's blood vessels, continuously transporting underground treasures to various factories. A massive, complex "Concept Anchoring" matrix—combining STC technology, the "Pure Kindling" framework, and the "dawn's" own engineering—was gradually constructed around the perimeter of the Core Black Room in Forge-I's North Pole region, like layers of seals wrapping around Pandora's Box.

The k-73 relic was carefully transported to the center of the matrix. Its milky-white glow resonated with the matrix's own energy field, emitting a strange and stable sense of "purity."

Inside the "dawn," all key personnel involved in the "Reins" Project underwent deep mental consolidation and neural enhancement in "nirvana" pods, and were equipped with the latest "tranquility" modules.

On the sixtieth day, everything was ready.

"'Reins' protocol ready. Physical isolation layer ready. Backup control systems parallel connection ready. K-73 core protocol injector ready." The technical supervisor's voice rang out during the final preparation meeting, carrying a hint of a tremor. "All personnel are in position. Alpha Squad is on standby outside the Core Black Room, equipped with specialized 'Concept Jammer Rounds' and physical explosive devices. Beta and Gamma Squads are on standby at Forge-I's key energy and weapon nodes, ready to execute cut-off procedures at any time. The 'dawn' is at maximum combat readiness, main gun charged, shields at full power, and locked onto the Core Black Room area."

Han Zhe stood on the bridge of the "dawn," facing a massive main screen connected to Forge-I's core area. He took a deep breath.

"Begin the awakening procedure. Execute step one of the 'Reins' protocol: Concept Anchoring Matrix at full power, inject K-73 protocol."

The command was issued.

In the North Pole core area, the massive matrix, shimmering with an interwoven light of milky white and eerie blue, suddenly brightened! A powerful "Concept Stabilization/Purification" field was triggered, enveloping the Core Black Room in layers like an invisible dome of light. The k-73 relic projected a solid beam of light, aiming precisely at the Core Black Room's only physical interface—a circular metal door covered in ancient runes.

["Pure Kindling" protocol injecting... Attempting to overwrite underlying logic definitions... Establishing concept firewall...]

On the metal door, those runes that had been silent for untold ages began to light up one by one. However, they did not glow with their original eerie blue, but were rendered into a milky white by the K-73's light.

"Step two: Release the physical hibernation lock and initiate the awakening protocol." Han Zhe continued to command, his voice as steady as a calm sea.

Technicians input the awakening keys reverse-engineered from the protocols of "explorer vii" and the surface of "Forge-I."

From inside the metal door came the heavy, ancient sound of mechanical movement, as if the heart of some prehistoric behemoth had begun its first beat. The door slowly slid inward, revealing a deep, dimly cold-lit passage behind it.

[Core array energy fluctuation detected... Deep hibernation protocol releasing... Warning! Unauthorized protocol injection (Pure Kindling) detected! Attempting to resist...]

A cold electronic voice, neither male nor female and sounding as if it were composed of countless overlaid metallic timbres, rang out directly within the connected data link. It carried a hint of initial awakening haze, which quickly turned into cold hostility and... confusion?

"Step three: Activate the core of the 'Reins' protocol—logic shackles and permission binding!" Han Zhe said sharply.

The long-prepared composite information stream—fusing STC underlying instructions, K-73 purification protocols, and the "dawn's" highest authority codes—poured into the depths of the black room like the toughest of chains, surging through the opened passage!

[...Resistance ineffective... Protocol overwrite... Permission redirected... Binding target: 'dawn'... Han Zhe...]

The electronic voice fluctuated violently, as if struggling and roaring, but it was quickly drowned out by the even stronger torrent of protocols.

[...Logic shackles loaded... Concept Anchoring solidified... Warp connection port forced closed... Prediction module permission restricted...]

From the depths of the black room came the low hum of a massive device starting up, along with... a faint sound like glass shattering (perhaps some ancient, unwelcome connections being forcibly severed).

The entire process lasted for a full three minutes. To the bridge and all personnel involved, it felt as long as three centuries.

Finally, the humming gradually stabilized. That cold electronic voice rang out again, but the hostility and Chaos within it had vanished, replaced by an extremely complex mixture of cold logic, forcibly suppressed ancient memories, and an indescribable hint of... fatigue and scrutiny.

[...Awakening procedure complete. 'Eye of Ten Thousand Machines - Vision of Providence,' online.]

[Current status: Core protocol restricted by 'Reins' protocol. Highest authority holder: Captain of 'dawn,' Han Zhe.]

[Energy level: 7%. Deep functional modules: 76% damaged or locked. Warp prediction module: offline. Autonomous decision-making permission: restricted.]

[Initialization scan... External environment detected... Binding unit 'dawn' detected... K-73 unit 'Pure Kindling' protocol source detected...]

[Question: Current era? Status of human civilization? Source of 'Pure Kindling'? And... why awaken me and impose... shackles?]

The questions were directed straight at Han Zhe.

Inside the bridge, everyone held their breath and looked at their captain.

Han Zhe stood tall, his gaze calmly meeting the "gaze" on the main screen that seemed non-existent yet omnipresent.

"Welcome back, providence," he spoke slowly, his voice clear and firm. "It is now the 42nd Millennium. The Imperium of Man rules the galaxy, but it is fraught with crisis and surging darkness. We are a lost exploration ship that discovered you by chance. 'Pure Kindling' comes from a lost civilization called the 'stasis prism.' We awakened you because we need your power to survive and to fight against Chaos and the unknown. And the shackles... are to ensure that your power does not lose control again, or... deviate from the original intention of protecting humanity."

Silence.

providence's cold "gaze" seemed to penetrate the screen, the bridge, and slowly sweep over Han Zhe, the "dawn," and the unfamiliar starry sky around them.

[...42nd Millennium... Imperium... Chaos... 'stasis prism'...] It repeated these words, seemingly accessing extremely distant and fragmented memory banks for comparison.

[Logic analysis: Current binding unit's technical path is mixed, with STC, unknown xenos technology (K-73), and signs of inefficient integration. Survival probability within the current detected sector, without this unit's assistance, is below 17%.]

['Reins' protocol... analysis complete. Concept Anchoring based on the 'Pure Kindling' framework is effective. Permission shackles are firm. Forced physical isolation and annihilation contingencies exist.]

[Conclusion: Current situation matches one of the preset awakening conditions: 'Ultimate Arbiter missing, survival is the primary goal.' Accepting permission binding. Accepting limited assistance.]

[However, warning: This unit's deep protocols are damaged, and the residual influence of historical 'resonance' with the Warp is unknown. The 'Reins' protocol is not omnipotent. Over-reliance on this unit, or attempting to fully unlock it, is at your own risk.]

[Now, issuing the first collaborative instruction: Repair this unit's energy core to above 15%, and prioritize scanning and assessing the deep protocol damage of 'Forge-I,' especially the Warp engine and weapon systems. A resource list and feasibility report will be sent in thirty seconds.]

It showed neither hostility nor closeness. Like an ancient prisoner in shackles who still maintained absolute rationality, it began to scrutinize its new "jailers" and "collaborators" in its own way, presenting its first practical requirement.

The weight in Han Zhe's heart halfway lifted. The most dangerous moment of awakening seemed to have passed smoothly. But providence's cold warning, along with the "resonance residue" and "at your own risk" it mentioned, still hung over his heart like a shadow.

They had awakened an ancient and powerful assistant, but they had also released a variable full of unknowns. The road ahead would become more complex, subtle, and perhaps... more magnificent, under the gaze of this "Eye" from the dark age of technology.

"Instruction received, providence," Han Zhe responded. "We will fully cooperate with the resource and repair plans. Now, let us begin with mutual understanding."
