51: Dawn Battleship

The aftershocks of the impact echoed through the twisted metal skeleton of the Ark like the tolling of a rusted bell. The air was thick with the smell of ozone, molten insulation, and a faint hint of blood. Under the flickering emergency lights, soldiers and engineering personnel moved like busy worker ants, weaving through damaged corridors and compartments to repair pipelines, seal leaks, and carry the wounded. Low, suppressed groans of pain intermingled with short, calm commands, composing a cruel symphony of survival.

Han Zhe sat before a crudely connected backup command node—the original flight control center had been largely paralyzed by the impact and energy backlash. Startling damage reports flickered across the rough light screen. The figure 'Structural Integrity: 65%' burned into his consciousness like a red-hot iron. Sectors A through D, accounting for nearly a third of the Ark's forward structure, were either twisted and torn apart or pinned and embedded within the asteroid's rocky mass. The remains of the fallen soldiers had been properly collected, and the critically injured were receiving emergency medical treatment (resource points were being rapidly consumed to synthesize advanced medicine), but the weight and anger brought by the sacrifice pressed heavily on everyone's hearts.

However, after the initial agony and chaos, a colder, harder determination began to solidify. The experience of being passively attacked and nearly hunted and destroyed by twisted space monsters was like a bucket of ice-cold water, extinguishing the last trace of luck and complacency in Han Zhe's heart.

The Ark could not just be a mobile base, a clumsy miner, or a fragile cradle.

It had to be a sword. A steel blade capable of cutting through the darkness, severing threats, and protecting all the hope and future within it.

“keystone,” Han Zhe's voice was somewhat raspy from inhaling dust, but it was exceptionally clear, “summarize all damage data and initiate a comprehensive repair and modification plan. Code name... ‘anvil forging’.”

“Command confirmed. Summarizing damage assessment... Prioritizing repairs... Generating ‘anvil forging’ plan framework...”

On the light screen, a 3D model of the damaged Ark lit up. Red areas represented severe damage, yellow indicated repairs needed, and blue marked planned modification zones.

“Core plan objective: Transform the Ark from a general mobile platform into a light attack/escort ship (tentative classification) with basic combat capabilities. Execution in phases.”

Phase One: Emergency Repair and Structural Reshaping (Estimated time: 15-20 standard days)

· Repair the power system and restore the ‘Blaze’ reactor to over 80% output.

· Patch hull damage and reinforce existing structures. For the forward sections (most of Sector A, parts of Sector B) that are severely crushed by asteroid rock and have low repair value, execute a ‘strategic abandonment’—cut and separate them entirely! Use the refining core to recycle materials on-site.

· Replan the hull layout. Use the vacated space to expand key areas: strengthen the bridge's (new command center) protection; increase hangar and sortie bay capacity; and reserve energy distribution lines and mounting bases for weapon systems.

Phase Two: Weapon System Integration and Upgrading (Estimated time: 25-30 standard days)

· Main Battery (Prow): Integrate two ‘giant wave’ class twin-linked Plasma Macro-cannons (based on ‘Blaze’ reactor technology and ‘Taotie’ protocol energy compression principles, scaled up), used for medium-to-long-range fire projection.

· Secondary Battery (Broadside): Install multiple shipborne enlarged versions of the ‘Hive’ auto-turrets—the ‘Thunderstorm’ point-defense laser/railgun hybrid arrays, used for intercepting small high-speed targets and close-in defense.

· Missile Launch Units: Establish a Vertical Launch System (VLS), compatible with shipborne models of the ‘can opener’ anti-armor missiles (increased range and power) and future ship-to-ship and anti-air missiles.

· Carrier/Assault Craft Hangar: Expand the hangar and design launch and recovery systems capable of carrying improved versions of the ‘Hound’ reconnaissance platform (the ‘hound-ii’, with added light weaponry) and potential future small assault craft.

Phase Three: Defense and Mobility Enhancement (Estimated time: 20-25 standard days)

· Armor Upgrade: Replace all damaged and newly exposed hull surfaces with ‘Simulated Taosteel-II’ (an optimized version reaching 78% performance of true tao steel) composite armor plates. Consider adding extra dome armor or spaced armor to key areas (such as the reactor, bridge, and ‘Hive’ center).

· Shield System: Based on STC ‘Global Shielding’ technical principles, develop and install the ‘iron curtain’ energy deflection shield generator (experimental). Does not aim for total blockage, but rather to deflect and weaken energy weapon attacks and provide kinetic attenuation against physical projectiles.

· Propulsion System Upgrade: Repair and strengthen existing thrusters to increase thrust output. Research the addition of auxiliary thruster groups to improve turning and maneuverability. Pre-lay energy conduits and computing units for possible future short-range tactical warps (a controlled version of emergency jumps).

Phase Four: Internal System and Personnel Integration

· Optimize damage control systems and establish rapid isolation and repair procedures.

· Establish dedicated combat readiness zones, rapid response corridors, and internal defense positions for clone soldiers.

· Integrate ‘Diting’ network data with shipborne sensors to establish a unified battlefield information processing and tactical command system.

“Estimated total resource requirement (including repair and modification): 180,000 to 220,000 points. Energy requirement: Massive, requires the ‘Blaze’ reactor to run at full capacity. Total time span: 60 to 75 standard days, some phases can be carried out concurrently.” keystone provided the cold numbers.

180,000 to 220,000! This would nearly exhaust all of the Ark's current resource reserves and might even require 'eating' more than half of this asteroid. Sixty to seventy-five days... they had to remain highly vigilant during this period to prevent another attack.

“Approved. Execute Phase One immediately. Unlimited supply of resource points. Suspend all non-essential production; put everything into repair and modification.” Han Zhe did not hesitate for a second. Without power, no amount of resources would be anything more than making a wedding dress for someone else.

The order was given, and the Ark—this steel behemoth that had just suffered a heavy blow—began its painful and resolute metamorphosis.

Phase One was the most brutal and direct. Several SCVs and soldiers in heavy engineering exoskeletons, carrying high-power cutting lasers, began to cut away the forward compartments designated for ‘strategic abandonment’. The laser beams scorched the twisted metal, emitting blinding light and blue smoke. The severed, broken structures, weighing hundreds or even thousands of tons, were carefully moved away using tractor beams and then fed into the expanded input of the refining core, which was waiting like a gaping maw.

The ‘Taotie’ protocol ran at full power, ruthlessly devouring and decomposing these former living quarters, storage bays, and non-critical equipment areas, converting them into basic resource points and usable alloy materials. Every piece devoured was accompanied by a slight vibration of the internal structure and a jump in resource points, as if the ship were consuming a part of itself to be reborn.

Meanwhile, more engineering effort was poured into the emergency repairs of the core areas. Energy pipelines were relaid, damaged reactor components were replaced, and the damage to the bridge area was quickly patched and covered with thicker armor plates.

The Alpha, Beta, and Gamma Squads, in addition to being responsible for security (now primarily at key internal nodes and external cutting zones), were all put into the heavy labor of hauling, clearing, and assisting with installations. No one complained; everyone knew they were fighting for survival, for revenge, and for the future.

Han Zhe spent most of his time at the temporary command node, coordinating the overall situation and handling the endless stream of problems. He would occasionally look out the viewport at the asteroid that had severely injured them and was now being 'eaten' by them. Its rocky mass was being stripped and devoured at a visible rate, providing crucial raw materials for the ‘anvil forging’ plan.

Resource points fluctuated violently between heavy consumption and frantic replenishment, but the overall trend was slowly rising, gradually approaching the threshold required for the modification.

Fifteen days later, Phase One was basically complete. Nearly a quarter of the forward structure had been excised and recycled. The Ark's silhouette became shorter and more compact, but it also exuded a sharp sense of being rebuilt from the ashes. The power system stabilized, and the ‘Blaze’ reactor roared as it had before.

Phase Two followed immediately. The prow, which had been smashed to pieces, was completely cleared, and a massive, recessed gun mount base was cast. Components of the ‘giant wave’ class twin-linked Plasma Macro-cannon from the production lines (which had been partially restored) were hoisted and integrated one by one. The thick barrels and complex energy focusing rings gave off an aura of invincibility just by looking at them.

On the broadsides, armor plates were cut open to reveal the internal structure, and the rotating turret bases for the ‘Thunderstorm’ point-defense arrays were welded on. The positions for the missile silos were planned and excavated (using the space from the cut-away hull and parts of the asteroid rock).

Inside the ship, pipelines were relaid like new blood vessels according to the power requirements of the new weapons. The energy distribution hub was expanded and reinforced.

Phase Three proceeded almost simultaneously. Newly produced ‘Simulated Taosteel-II’ alloy plates were transported to various armor gaps and firmly fixed to the reinforced skeleton by heavy welders. Key areas began to be fitted with a second or even third layer of spaced armor. The prototype shield generator began assembly within the refining core, its schematics filled with baffling energy topologies derived from stc fragments.

The days passed one by one.

On the twenty-fifth day, the first ‘giant wave’ macro-cannon was installed and underwent a low-power test fire. A blinding plasma torrent streaked through the void, instantly vaporizing more than half of a discarded armor target specifically placed in the distance. Its power was astonishing, but its energy consumption was equally terrifying; a single volley could drain nearly a fifth of the ‘Blaze’ reactor's instantaneous output.

On the thirty-fifth day, the first batch of four ‘Thunderstorm’ point-defense arrays completed installation and calibration, forming an initial lateral fire network. The missile silos were excavated, and the installation of launch units and loading mechanisms began.

On the forty-fifth day, the ‘iron curtain’ shield generator prototype was installed and began testing. A thin, pale blue, slightly fluctuating energy film appeared on the surface of the Ark. Although it looked weak, tests showed it could effectively deflect and weaken low-intensity energy attacks and produce a certain degree of deceleration and deflection against physical projectiles.

On the fiftieth day, the external hull modification was basically complete. The current Ark no longer resembled the bloated platform of before. It was more like a... crude, powerful warship full of utilitarian, violent aesthetics. The short, thick hull, the heavy, angular armor, the menacing twin-linked macro-cannons at the prow, the forest of point-defense turrets on the broadsides, and the reinforced thruster array at the stern all proclaimed its combat nature. Although the lines still carried the coarseness of being handcrafted, and weld scars could be seen at many joints, an air of killing intent was already palpable.

Internally, a new, more robust, and functionally partitioned command center was put into use. The clone soldiers had dedicated readiness zones and rapid corridors. The ‘Hive’ center was protected by a more complete damping and armor system, and the cultivation of the delta batch was not significantly affected; in fact, it proceeded more smoothly due to the resource investment.

On the sixtieth day, the main engineering of the ‘anvil forging’ plan was declared complete.

The Ark—or perhaps it should now be called the warship ‘dawn’—floated quietly beside the asteroid, which had been mostly devoured and left as a wreck. Its entire body was covered in dull ‘Simulated Taosteel-II’ armor, with the deep prow cannons and the grim broadside turrets. The shield generator ran at low power, emitting a faint blue light. The internal energy core pulsed steadily, providing power to this newly forged blade.

Han Zhe stood in the brand-new command center, staring at his creation through the wide observation window. The sixty days and nights of suffering, sacrifice, and near-manic labor had finally transformed into this body of steel before him.

It was not yet perfect; its fire configuration was singular, its mobility was still poor, its shields were fragile, and it lacked electronic warfare and more advanced detection methods.

But it was already a warship. A warship with main guns, point-defense, missiles, shields, and a marine corps composed of loyal soldiers.

No longer was it prey to be slaughtered at will.

“Reporting to the Captain, all ship systems self-check complete. ‘dawn’ status: Ready.” keystone's voice rang out in the new command center, carrying a hint of resonance that was different from before, as if it had merged with the ship's hull.

Captain... Han Zhe savored this new title. Yes, he was no longer a base Commander, but the captain of a warship.

His gaze turned toward the deep starry sky. There, those twisted monsters might still be roaming, and more dangers and secrets might be hidden.

But now, he had a sword in his hand.

“Order the entire ship,” Han Zhe's voice was calm and firm, echoing through the command center, “rehabilitative training and tactical integration to begin. Target: to initially form ship-personnel coordinated combat capability within thirty days. Simultaneously, the ‘Diting’ network is to move forward and expand the reconnaissance range.”

“We must become familiar with our new home and sharpen our claws and teeth.”

“And then...”

He paused, a cold light flashing in his eyes.

“Go and get our payback.”
