157: You call this evolution?
Chapter 157: You Call This Evolution? Crack.
A crisp sound.
The first glass jar on the left cracked.
Due to excessive internal temperature and violent shaking, the high-strength bulletproof glass shattered Li Ke a spiderweb.
Bang!
The glass completely shattered.
Boiling nutrient solution mixed with fragmented brain tissue splashed across the floor Li Ke a pot of hot porridge.
Followed by the second, and the third.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
A series of explosions echoed in the hall.
The stench instantly overpowered the original high-end fragrance.
Those four "Perfect Brains," which Professor Qin cherished as treasures and intended to carry the computing power of the new world, were now a mess of red and white sludge on the floor.
The liquid on the floor flowed to Professor Qin's feet, staining his expensive handmade leather shoes.
The light orb went out.
The data waterfall on the surrounding screens completely stopped, turning into static.
The oppressive humming sound that had filled the air finally vanished.
The world became quiet.
Except for Chen Mo's broken personal stereo, which was still tirelessly spinning, emitting a rustling background noise.
"Evolution?"
Chen Mo limped over, his feet making squelching sounds as he stepped on the viscous liquid.
He bent down, picked up the still-spinning personal stereo, and pressed the stop button.
"Turning people into this rotten flesh soaked in a jar, you call this evolution?"
Chen Mo carefully tucked the personal stereo back into his pocket, treating it as a treasure more precious than human life.
"Professor Qin, you've read yourself stupid."
"True evolution is finding a way to survive even in this pile of sludge."
Professor Qin stared blankly at the mess on the floor.
His hair was messy, his tailcoat stained, and his aura of lofty divinity vanished in that moment.
He looked Li Ke a child whose candy had been snatched away, or a gambler who had lost his last penny.
"It's gone... all gone..."
Professor Qin muttered to himself.
Suddenly, he lifted his head sharply, staring intently at Chen Mo.
His eyes, once full of rationality, were now filled only with naked madness and murderous intent.
"Since I cannot become a god..."
Professor Qin's hand suddenly reached for the base beneath the light orb.
There was a red mechanical lever there.
It was very primitive.
But this often implied the most direct form of violence.
"Stop him!" Su Qingxue shouted, pulling the trigger again.
Bang!
The bullet hit Professor Qin's shoulder, making him stumble.
But he didn't stop.
Using the impact force of the shot, he lunged onto the lever and yanked it down hard.
"Then let's go to hell together!"
Professor Qin laughed maniacally, spitting blood foam, "This is the final purification protocol designed to prevent system contamination! Two tons of high-energy explosives are buried in the base of the Broadcast Tower!"
"Since it's dirty, burn it clean!"
Buzz—!
The entire Broadcast Tower shook violently.
Red warning lights began spinning madly, and a piercing siren echoed throughout the sky.
[Self-Destruct Sequence Initiated, Countdown: 180 seconds.]
The mechanical, synthesized voice coldly pronounced the death sentence.
The floor began to tilt.
The metal plates overhead emitted a grinding, sickening sound.
"Run!"
Chen Mo roared.
He grabbed Li Ke from the floor and shoved him into Su Qingxue's arms.
"Take them and go! The elevator still works!"
"What about you?" Su Qingxue gripped Chen Mo's sleeve tightly, her knuckles white.
"I still have a score to settle."
Chen Mo looked at Professor Qin, who was still laughing maniacally while clutching the lever.
"Ninth Master! Open the elevator!"
Ninth Master climbed up from the floor, his face covered in blood. He glanced at Chen Mo, said nothing, but nodded heavily.
He pressed the remote control in his hand.
The elevator door slid open.
Su Qingxue wanted to say more, but Ninth Master and Li Ke forcefully dragged her inside.
"Chen Mo! You bastard!"
Su Qingxue's curses were cut off as the elevator door closed.
Only two people remained in the hall.
And the widespread wreckage.
As well as the furiously ticking countdown numbers.
[160...159...]
"You're not running?"
Professor Qin leaned against the base, clutching his bleeding shoulder, a morbid pleasure on his face. "It's useless. At this height, there's no way out except the elevator."
"I didn't plan on running."
Chen Mo picked up the shotgun, which had long run out of ammunition, and used the barrel as a cane.
He walked up to Professor Qin.
Looking down.
"I just want to ask something."
Chen Mo's voice was soft, yet terrifyingly clear amidst the siren.
"Twenty years ago, at the Orphanage."
"The man who dug me out of the pile of corpses, the police officer who gave me a piece of candy."
"Was he one of your test subjects too?"
Professor Qin paused.
Then, he laughed.
He was shaking with laughter.
"Old Lin? That fool?"
"He was the perfect observer. Too bad he was soft-hearted." Professor Qin shook his head. "I had him observe you, recording your every emotional fluctuation. What was the result? He raised you as his own son."
"To protect you, he even secretly modified your medical examination reports and blocked your abnormal brainwave signals."
"If it weren't for him, you should have been lying in this jar fifteen years ago."
Professor Qin pointed to the fragments on the floor.
"So, I had no choice but to dispose of this unqualified part."
"Do you know? When his brain was being extracted, he was still muttering your name."
Professor Qin narrowed his eyes, seemingly savoring that marvelous moment.
"He said: Let Xiao Mo live Li Ke a normal person."
"Hahahaha! A normal person? You are A-001! You are a god!"
Chen Mo remained silent.
He just listened quietly.
His hand gripped the gun barrel so tightly that his fingernails broke, and blood dripped down the rusty iron pipe.
[120...119...]
"Are you finished?" Chen Mo asked.
"I'm finished." Professor Qin spread his hands. "What now? Want to kill me? Go ahead. We'll all turn to ash in two minutes anyway."
"Kill you?"
Chen Mo shook his head.
Suddenly, he threw away the gun barrel he was holding.
Then, he pulled something out from his lower back.
It wasn't a weapon.
It was a pair of handcuffs.
A pair of the oldest, slightly rusty police handcuffs.
It was one of Old Lin's belongings, kept in the deepest part of the safe.
Click.
Chen Mo cuffed one end of the handcuffs onto Professor Qin's undamaged wrist.
The other end, he cuffed onto the heavy console base that was welded to the floor.
Professor Qin's expression changed.
"What are you doing?"
"Don't you Li Ke purification?"
Chen Mo turned and walked toward the massive floor-to-ceiling window.
Outside, the wind and rain intensified.
Thunder and lightning intertwined.
"You stay right here and watch how your 'Kingdom of God' collapses."
Chen Mo grabbed a chair and smashed it with all his might against the bulletproof glass.
Bang!
The glass didn't budge.
"It's useless! That's aerospace glass! You can't get out!"
Professor Qin shouted, "You're going to die here with me!"
"Oh really?"
Chen Mo pulled the boning knife out of his pocket.
The blade was already dull.
But he didn't care.
He aimed the tip of the knife at a corner of the glass, a small white spot that had been hit by a stray bullet during the earlier chaos.
That was the stress point.
"Old Lin taught me."
Chen Mo took a deep breath.
"As long as you find the right spot, even the hardest bone is brittle."
