267: Devil's Game
Chapter 267: The Devil's Game. Chen Mo stepped over the engine oil and blood covering the ground, walking toward the steps.
The red laser blade was only a centimeter away from the fat man's nose; the searing temperature caused the grease on his face to sizzle.
"The entrance... to the second basement level."
Chen Mo's voice was colder than the rain.
"In... in the cafeteria..."
The fat man trembled so much that the IV tube behind him was about to shake loose. "Big... Big Sister... is down there..."
"Big Sister?"
Chen Mo frowned.
"She's the leader of these lunatics."
Haozi crawled out from a pile of corpses, kicking away a severed hand that was still clutching his ankle. "I heard she's a ruthless character. She was originally the head nurse here, but then she went crazy and modified herself into..."
Haozi didn't get to finish his sentence.
Boom!
The main building's entrance suddenly exploded.
A massive shockwave sent Haozi flying, and even the several-hundred-pound fat man was blown backward, rolling several times on the ground.
Chen Mo held his left arm in front of him, blocking the flying debris.
The dust and smoke cleared.
A massive figure stood at the entrance.
It was a woman.
At least, she once was.
She wore a filthy pink nurse's uniform, but the garment was stretched to the point of tearing.
She stood at least two and a half meters tall, her muscles bulging like rocks.
The most terrifying part was her arms.
They weren't arms at all, but two massive, still-spinning industrial drills.
She wore an iron mask that only revealed a pair of blood-red eyes, and a roar like a steam engine emanated from her throat.
"Who... disturbs... mealtime..."
The woman's voice sounded like muffled thunder.
"This is the head nurse?"
Ruan Qiushui floated in front of the woman and gestured. "Whoa, look at that bust, those muscles. It's a shame she's not in a bodybuilding competition."
"This is the 'Drill Executioner'."
Haozi scrambled up from the ground, his face pale. "We're done for. This woman is the ceiling of combat power here. They say she can drill through even a tank!"
Chen Mo looked at the giant.
The core's energy readings were dropping.
That last burst of power just now had consumed quite a bit.
"Hey, newcomer."
The giantess looked down at Chen Mo, who wasn't even as tall as her legs. "The parts on your body... smell delicious."
"I want to... tear them off... and use them as toothpicks."
Whirrr—
The two massive drills began to accelerate their rotation, the resulting wind pressure whipping up the debris on the ground.
"You can try."
Chen Mo lowered his left hand, the laser blade retracted, and in its place, a ball of blinding blue light lit up in his palm.
It was the charging glow of a miniature electromagnetic cannon.
"But my toothpicks are a bit too hot for the mouth."
The atmosphere froze to the breaking point.
Just as both sides were about to make a move...
A piercing broadcast suddenly rang out across the entire courtyard.
Sizzle—
"Testing... testing..."
It was a flippant male voice, laced with a bit of mockery.
"Oh my, how lively. It seems our new friend has arrived."
Upon hearing this voice, the arrogant giantess suddenly shuddered, like a mouse hearing a cat's meow.
Her madly spinning drills actually slowed to a halt.
Chen Mo abruptly looked up at the speaker on the roof.
This voice.
It wasn't Wang Daoming.
Nor was it Li Chunfeng.
"Who are you?"
Chen Mo asked the air.
"Who I am isn't important."
The voice from the speaker chuckled. "What matters is that you're here for 'Lab Zero', right?"
"Then come on in, Officer Chen."
"However, we have to play a game."
"From here to the second basement, there are three stages. If you can make it to me alive, I'll tell you where Wang Daoming is."
"If you die halfway..."
The voice paused, turning incredibly cold.
"Then this body of yours will be my finest collectible."
Click.
The broadcast cut off.
At the same time, all the lights in the main building went out.
Leaving only a deathly silent darkness.
"Play a game?"
Chen Mo extinguished the light in his palm, his lips curling into a cold arc.
He hated playing games most of all.
But what he was best at was flipping the table.
"Haozi, stay close."
Chen Mo strode across the debris on the ground, heading straight for the giantess. "Anything in my way must die."
The giantess, however, seemed to have lost her fighting spirit. She looked into the depths of the dark main building in terror and actually stepped aside, clearing a path for Chen Mo.
"What? Is she scared?"
Haozi was dumbfounded.
"No."
As Chen Mo passed by the giantess, he heard her muttering under her breath.
"The devil... the devil has awakened..."
"Who's the devil?" Haozi asked.
Chen Mo didn't answer.
He looked at the dark entrance ahead, which resembled the gaping maw of a giant beast.
Li Chunfeng had said that this was the starting point of evil.
Since it was the starting point, it must bury the secrets Wang Daoming least wanted anyone to know.
"Let's go."
Chen Mo turned on his night vision goggles.
In the green field of vision, he saw walls covered in bloody handprints extending deep underground.
"Let's go see if this devil can withstand my blade."
...The air in the lobby was thick.
In the green view of the night vision goggles, the floor was scattered with medical records and broken medicine bottles.
The wall paint curled and peeled like dead skin, revealing rusted rebar behind it, as if the building itself were a giant with a skin disease.
"Don't step on that."
Chen Mo suddenly stopped and blocked Haozi behind him.
Haozi's toe hovered a centimeter above a floor tile, his whole body stiff. "Wha... what's wrong? Landmines?"
"No."
Chen Mo squatted down, using his brand-new mechanical left hand to gently brush away the waste paper on the floor.
Underneath was a face.
A human face embedded in the floor, crushed and mangled.
It wasn't painted on; it was real human skin connected to some kind of sensory wiring underneath.
"It's a pressure sensor."
Chen Mo pointed ahead. "The entire floor of this lobby is paved with 'people'. Every step will trigger an alarm."
Haozi felt like vomiting on the spot.
He pulled his foot back, pressing himself against the doorframe, his face whiter than the wall plaster. "Brother, how the hell do we move? Fly across?"
"Simple."
Chen Mo looked up at the ceiling.
Several precarious chandeliers hung there, along with some exposed ventilation ducts.
"Hold on to me."
"Huh?"
Before Haozi could react, the grappling hook from Chen Mo's left arm shot out, biting firmly into the thick ventilation pipe.
Zzt—
The winch retracted.
Carrying the hundred-plus-pound Haozi with one hand, Chen Mo soared into the air like a giant bat and landed lightly on the ventilation pipe.
"Holy..."
Haozi clung tightly to Chen Mo's thigh, not even caring how hard the metal was. "Were you an acrobat before this?"
"Shut up."
Chen Mo squatted on the pipe, looking coldly at the floor below.
The moment they left the ground, the 'faces' on the floor all suddenly opened their eyes.
Countless murky eyeballs rolled in their sockets, and mouths opened, emitting faint, scalp-tingling groans.
"It hurts... it hurts..."
If they had stepped on them just now, they would likely have been swallowed alive by these things.
"It seems the first stage is cleared."
That annoying broadcast voice rang out again. "But Officer Chen, cheating isn't a good habit."
Chen Mo ignored him.
He moved quickly along the pipes toward the interior.
This was the former outpatient building, its structure as complex as a maze.
The further they went, the heavier the smell of formalin became, even overpowering the scent of mold.
"Ruan Qiushui."
"Here."
The female ghost floated ahead to scout, her red dress appearing exceptionally eerie in the green night vision display. "There's a large room ahead with a terrifyingly heavy yin energy. It's more sinister than a mass grave."
"Any living people?"
"No living people, but quite a few... living dead."
