211: Specimen Frenzy
Chapter 211: Specimen Frenzy. Chen Mo stood silently.
He touched his chest.
There, that so-called "Biological Pump" was beating powerfully.
If it were before, he would have thought he was going crazy.
But now, looking at the surrounding jars filled with failed products and listening to Wang Daoming's mad ramblings, he actually felt an unprecedented sense of calm.
So that was it.
All the headaches, all the auditory hallucinations, all those nightmares that had tortured him for five years.
None of it was an illness.
It was rejection.
It was his human soul refusing this modified shell.
"Are you finished?"
Chen Mo looked up, his eyes terrifyingly calm.
Wang Daoming's laughter stopped abruptly. "You... you're not surprised? You're not angry?"
"Why should I be angry?"
Chen Mo pulled out the Bone-cleaver tucked into his lower back, the blade glinting coldly under the blue light of the screen. "Regardless of whether I'm human or a ghost, and regardless of whose heart this is..."
He took a step forward.
"The control is in my hands now."
"You..." The fanaticism on Wang Daoming's face faded, replaced by fear. "What are you doing?"
"Destroying defective products."
Chen Mo swung the blade.
Crack!
The keyboard on the console was split in two with a single strike, sparks flying everywhere.
The face on the large screen instantly distorted and flickered before turning into a field of static.
"No! The data! My data!" Wang Daoming screamed, lunging forward to try and salvage the hard drive.
Chen Mo swung the back of his blade and struck him across the face, sending him flying until he crashed into an empty transparent container.
Crash.
The container shattered, and glass shards embedded themselves all over Wang Daoming.
"Ninth Master, find the explosives."
Chen Mo gave the order without looking back. "Blow this place up. This place shouldn't exist."
"You got it!" Ninth Master had long found this place an eyesore. He pulled several blocks of C4 from his backpack. "I originally kept these for those mercenaries, but now they'll serve as a send-off for these canned dead people."
"Wait!"
Su Qingxue suddenly shouted, "Chen Mo, look at that screen!"
Although the main console was destroyed, a small side screen was still flickering.
A video was playing on it.
The footage was shaky, looking like a secret recording.
The setting was an operating room. A thin young boy lay on the operating table, his chest cavity open. A doctor was taking a beating heart out of a metal box filled with green liquid.
The doctor took off his mask, revealing a face.
Su Qingxue covered her mouth. "That... that's..."
Chen Mo stared at that face.
It was very familiar.
Extremely familiar.
The owner of that face had once presented him with a medal at his police academy graduation ceremony.
He had once prescribed him painkillers when he was in agony because of his ears.
He had once patted him on the shoulder and said "Good job" every time he solved a cold case.
That was the Director of the Forensic Science Department at the Municipal Bureau.
He was also the elder Chen Mo had trusted most all this time.
"Old... Old Zhang?" The C4 in Ninth Master's hand almost fell to the floor. "How is this possible? Old Zhang is such a good guy, he can't even stand to watch a chicken being slaughtered!"
In the video, "Old Zhang's" eyes were as cold as a knife.
He skillfully severed blood vessels, sutured them, and then said something to the camera.
There was no sound.
But Chen Mo could read lips.
It was four words.
"The seed is planted."
Zzzzt—
The screen went completely black.
The basement fell into a dead silence.
Only the "Biological Pump" in Chen Mo's chest cavity gave off one heavy roar after another.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
"It seems the person we need to catch isn't just Wang Daoming."
Chen Mo turned around, the expression on his face having vanished.
Completely vanished.
Like a machine that had shut down all its emotional modules.
"Take Wang Daoming with us," Chen Mo said. "He's the only survivor now."
"And here..." Ninth Master pointed to the jars around them.
"Blow it up."
Chen Mo's voice was devoid of any inflection. "Officer Su, set a ten-minute countdown."
Looking at the current Chen Mo, Su Qingxue suddenly felt a sense of strangeness.
The Chen Mo who would joke around, who would frown because of pain, and who would act impulsively for justice... it felt as if a part of him had died after watching that video.
"Okay." She bit her lip and began setting the detonator.
Just then.
Boom!
A loud noise came from overhead.
The entire basement shook violently, and dust trickled down.
"What's going on? An earthquake?" Ninth Master braced himself against the wall.
Chen Mo snapped his head up, staring at the ceiling.
That sound.
That frequency.
It wasn't an earthquake.
It was some kind of high-powered drilling equipment forcibly breaking through the concrete layer above.
"Someone is attacking the manor."
Chen Mo narrowed his eyes, his ears twitching slightly. "It's not the police. The heartbeats are wrong."
The heartbeats coming from above were too orderly.
Hundreds of heartbeats, perfectly synchronized, without fear or hesitation.
Exactly the same as those four "Scavengers" from earlier.
"Ninth Master, forget the countdown."
Chen Mo gripped the knife in his hand and turned toward the exit. "Detonate it directly. We must break out immediately."
"Why?"
"Because 'Old Zhang' has come to destroy the evidence."
Chen Mo said coldly, "And to destroy me as well."
Before Ninth Master could press the detonator, the heavy lead door suddenly emitted a piercing alarm.
Beep— Beep— Beep—
"Warning! External forced intrusion! Quarantine protocol initiated!"
Clang!
All the jars opened simultaneously.
The pale yellow nutrient solution poured out.
Hundreds of "failed products" that were originally lifeless actually began to twitch and writhe the moment the liquid hit the floor.
Hundreds of pairs of eyes that were originally closed or hollow lit up with a red glow at the same time.
"Shit!"
Ninth Master's scalp tingled as he watched those deformed monsters crawl up from the ground. "Is this a fucking Resident Evil scene?"
Chen Mo didn't speak.
He simply switched the knife to his left hand.
With his right hand, he picked up a piece of glass that hadn't completely shattered from the broken container and stabbed it ruthlessly into his own thigh.
Pfft.
Blood sprayed out.
The intense pain caused the frenzied heart in his chest to cool down instantly.
"Charge out."
Chen Mo licked the blood from the corner of his mouth, his eyes like a wolf's. "Anyone in the way dies."
...The speed at which the monsters lunged was faster than a dog's.
No, that couldn't be called running.
It was crawling on all fours, joints inverted, sliding across the floor tiles like spiders.
"Die!"
Ninth Master pulled the trigger.
Boom!
The double-barreled shotgun spat out a ball of fire.
A large hole exploded in the chest of the "Specimen" in the lead, green nutrient solution mixing with black blood and splashing against the wall.
It was knocked backward, tumbling into two of its kind behind it.
But it didn't die.
The monster with the hole in its chest twitched twice on the ground and actually stood up again, swaying.
Through that large hole, one could see the deformed heart inside still beating frantically.
"These things don't die?!"
Ninth Master cursed while quickly reloading. "Is shooting them in the head useless too?"
