226: ungrateful
Chapter 226: Giving Face Yet Refusing It. It really was a beast.
Chen Mo felt his entire body's blood burning.
The power absorbed from that heart earlier, though weak, was like a spark that ignited the gene pool within him, which was already on the verge of losing control.
Exhilarating.
Tear them apart.
Kill them all.
Chen Mo's vision had turned blood-red, and his ears were filled with the crisp sound of shattering bones.
But he hadn't lost his mind.
He was looking for that “Shepherd”.
The Faceless Man holding a lantern stood in the distance, watching the slaughter like a ghost.
It didn't move, nor did it make a sound.
But whenever a monster tried to retreat, the lantern in its hand would sway, and those monsters would, as if stimulated, rush forward again like mad.
That was the control center.
“Cover me!”
Chen Mo roared and suddenly accelerated.
He stepped on the scattered corpses, his whole body like a cannonball, directly crashing into the dense monster horde.
“Madman!” Ninth Master gritted his teeth and raised his gun, “Get lost for me!”
Boom boom boom!
The remaining shotgun shells were all unleashed, clearing a bloody path for Chen Mo.
Su Qingxue, meanwhile, calmly aimed at the lantern-holding figure in the distance.
Bang!
The bullet cut through the darkness, heading straight for the Faceless Man's glabella.
Clink.
A crisp impact sound.
The bullet stopped ten centimeters from the Faceless Man's face, as if hitting an invisible wall, then fell weakly to the ground.
“Force Field Shield?” Su Qingxue's pupils contracted, “That's a personal energy shield, military technology from the old era!”
The Faceless Man seemed enraged by this shot.
It slowly raised its hand that wasn't holding the lantern, its palm aimed at the charging Chen Mo.
Buzz—
A visible air ripple burst from its palm.
Chen Mo felt as if he had collided with a high-speed train.
The immense impact sent him flying backward, smashing hard against the wall, shattering the mural depicting the sun.
“Cough, cough...”
Chen Mo spat out a mouthful of blood, struggling to get up.
Was that telekinesis? Or some kind of sonic weapon?
The Faceless Man did not press its advantage.
It still stood there, the question mark drawn on its face appearing particularly mocking in the dim light.
It was waiting.
Waiting for Chen Mo to despair.
“Interesting.”
Chen Mo wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and threw away the steel rebar, which was now bent into a U-shape.
He stretched his neck, making cracking sounds.
“Since you don't want to show your face, then you don't need it.”
Chen Mo charged again.
This time, faster and fiercer.
The Faceless Man raised its hand again.
Another air ripple.
But this time, Chen Mo didn't meet it head-on.
The moment the ripple was about to hit him, he suddenly scooped down to the ground, sliding past with his body pressed low.
The ripple grazed his scalp, shearing off a few strands of hair, and blasted a large pit in the rock behind him.
He was close.
Five meters.
Three meters.
The Faceless Man seemed not to have expected this barbarian to possess such footwork; the lantern in its hand suddenly flared with a dazzling white light.
It was a high-frequency flashbang.
Enough to instantly blind a normal person.
But Chen Mo didn't close his eyes.
His pupils contracted to pinprick size in that instant, enduring the intense light's stimulation.
“Got you.”
Chen Mo's hand, like an iron clamp, seized the Faceless Man's throat.
It was cold to the touch.
Not like human skin, but rather some kind of synthetic rubber.
The Force Field Shield was completely ineffective at such close range, or rather, Chen Mo's grabbing speed exceeded its reaction threshold.
Bang!
Chen Mo pressed the Faceless Man's head and slammed it hard into the ground.
That smooth head created a dent in the ground, but it surprisingly didn't shatter.
Instead, Chen Mo's fingers felt a tingling sensation.
Was this guy's skull made of alloy?
The Faceless Man began to fight back.
Its joints suddenly twisted backward, and its two arms wrapped around Chen Mo's neck like snakes, tightening more and more.
The strength was astonishing, completely unlike what a slender humanoid creature could produce.
A sense of suffocation instantly flooded his brain.
Chen Mo felt his windpipe was about to be crushed.
But he smiled.
He released his grip on the opponent's neck and instead grabbed the still-glowing lantern.
“Like playing with lights?”
Chen Mo swung the antique-style lantern, striking the Faceless Man's question-mark-drawn face.
Smash!
The glass cover shattered.
The wick inside was not a flame, but a glowing high-energy battery.
The battery exploded.
Blue electric arcs instantly burst forth, spreading along the Faceless Man's face and across its entire body.
Sizzle sizzle sizzle—
The Faceless Man convulsed violently like an electrocuted frog, and the arms wrapped around Chen Mo's neck instantly loosened.
“Let me add some special effects for you.”
Chen Mo straddled it, picked up a sharp stone from the ground, and stabbed it fiercely into that face.
Pfft!
No blood.
Only white nutrient fluid splattered out.
The paper-white face was sliced open, revealing what was underneath.
No skull, no muscles.
Only dense circuit boards and a rotating eyeball camera.
“A robot?” Ninth Master, who had rushed over, was dumbfounded, “Is this a damn Terminator?”
“Not a robot.”
Su Qingxue walked over, squatted down, and examined the wound. “It's a bio-prosthetic human. The brain is alive, the body is mechanical.”
She pointed to the faintly throbbing pink tissue next to the camera. “Look, the brain matter is still there.”
Chen Mo threw away the stone and pulled out a data cable, still sparking, from the pile of wreckage.
As this cable broke, the surrounding monsters, which had been restless, suddenly stopped in unison, as if their power had been cut.
Then, they began to retreat.
That fear was ingrained in their bones; deprived of their controller's forced commands, they instinctively wanted to get away from these three harbingers of death.
“It's not the boss.”
Chen Mo stood up, looking at his hands covered in white fluid. “It's just a remote-controlled toy guarding the door.”
He kicked the remains on the ground.
On the mangled face, the question mark had been split in half, looking like a crying face.
“Let's go.”
Chen Mo picked up the broken lantern, now only a handle, and walked forward. “Let's go see who its master is.”
Passing through this battlefield, the tunnel widened.
The walls on both sides were no longer rough rock, but smooth metal plates.
The air became dry, even carrying a hint of the fresh smell unique to constant-temperature air conditioning.
It didn't feel at all like being hundreds of meters deep in an underground tomb.
“This place... something's not right.”
Ninth Master touched the wall. “The feel of this metal plate is smoother than my gold tooth. What material is this?”
“Titanium alloy.”
Su Qingxue said, “And it's aerospace-grade. An underground facility of this scale couldn't be built even if the Wang family emptied half their fortune.”
“So the Wang family didn't build this.”
Chen Mo stopped.
Before them was a massive glass curtain wall.
Through the glass, they witnessed a breathtaking scene.
