240: Want to sit at the table before even buying a ticket?
Chapter 240: Trying to Take a Seat Before Buying a Ticket? Ninth Master twisted the throttle hard.
Blue flames spat from the exhaust pipe as the motorcycle, like a raging bull, charged headlong into the dark, narrow alley.
There was no red light here, only chilling darkness and countless pairs of peeping eyes.
The gang here was called the "Scavengers."
Usually, they survived by recycling prosthetics from the dead, but in these chaotic times, they didn't mind stripping parts off the living.
Screech—!
The ear-piercing sound of brakes.
A modified garbage truck sat across the middle of the alley, flanked by piles of rusted iron drums and corpses.
The road was blocked solid.
"I told you there'd be a roadblock!" Ninth Master cursed loudly.
Several dark figures emerged from behind the garbage truck.
They held crude shotguns and steel pipes welded with serrated blades.
"Yo, isn't this Ninth Master?"
The leader was a bald man with half his face replaced by an iron plate, fiddling with an eyeball from an unknown source. "What, in a hurry to be reincarnated?"
"Get lost, Iron Head."
Ninth Master didn't cut the engine; it was still roaring. "That crazy woman behind us is arriving any second. If you don't want to die, get out of the way."
"That broad is busy tearing down buildings, what the hell does that have to do with us?"
Iron Head stared greedily at the heavy motorcycle, then glanced at Su Qingxue behind them. "Leave the bike, leave the woman. As for these two cripples..."
He pointed at Chen Mo and Ninth Master. "Strip their prosthetics and crawl the hell out of here."
Su Qingxue's gaze turned cold, her right hand reaching for the pulse pistol at her waist.
Chen Mo pressed down on her hand.
"Save your bullets."
Chen Mo stepped off the bike.
His steps were a bit unsteady, and with bandages still wrapped around his left shoulder, he looked like he might topple over in a light breeze.
Iron Head was amused.
"What? A gimp trying to play the hero?"
The surrounding thugs erupted into a burst of laughter.
Chen Mo didn't say a word.
He just walked forward.
One step, two steps.
As the distance closed, the wound on his chest began to throb with heat.
The vial of medicine White Dove had injected seemed to be activated by some kind of emotion.
Chen Mo raised his head.
In those eyes, clouded from excessive blood loss, a flash of dark red light suddenly flickered.
Thump.
This heartbeat wasn't just heard by Chen Mo.
Everyone present heard it.
Dull and oppressive, it was like a hammer striking everyone's eardrums.
Iron Head's laughter stopped abruptly.
He felt the surrounding air suddenly become viscous, and a terrifying pressure from the top of the food chain crashed down like a mountain.
It wasn't bloodlust.
It was appetite.
Pure, naked appetite.
Standing before him wasn't an injured man, but a ferocious beast that had been starving for centuries, looking at a plate of talking meat.
"You..."
Iron Head tried to raise his gun, but his fingers were so stiff they wouldn't obey at all.
Chen Mo walked up to him.
The distance was only half a meter.
Iron Head could even smell the scent of rust and medicine clinging to Chen Mo.
"Move."
Chen Mo spoke only one word.
His voice wasn't loud, and he didn't roar.
But Iron Head's legs went weak, and the gun in his hand fell to the ground with a clang.
"Move... Move! Everyone fucking move!"
Iron Head shrieked, scrambling to push the garbage truck aside, not caring if he scraped the paint, only wishing he had been born with two extra legs.
The other thugs were in even worse shape; some collapsed directly to the ground, a wet patch spreading across their crotches.
Chen Mo got back onto the motorcycle.
"Drive."
Ninth Master swallowed hard, looking at Chen Mo as if he were looking at a ghost.
But he didn't dare ask anything. He floored the throttle, and the motorcycle roared as it burst through the roadblock.
Only when the motorcycle disappeared at the end of the alley did Iron Head shakily climb up from the ground.
"Boss, who was that..." a lackey asked tremulously.
Iron Head wiped away cold sweat, staring in the direction Chen Mo had vanished.
"That wasn't a person."
"That was an evil spirit that just crawled out of hell."
...Rushing out of Kowloon Walled City, the field of vision suddenly opened up.
The central district of Jiang City.
Unlike the filth and chaos of the outskirts, the streets here were wide and smooth, and one could even see holographic billboards still in operation.
And at the center of it all stood a white tower.
The Lighthouse.
It was pure white, its surface seamless, like a giant ivory tusk piercing the clouds.
A pale blue energy barrier enveloped a five-hundred-meter radius around the Lighthouse, isolating the noise and filth of the outside world.
That was the last pure land in Jiang City.
And also its greatest den of iniquity.
"We're here!"
Ninth Master shouted, "The checkpoint is just ahead!"
The motorcycle sped toward it.
The checkpoint wasn't as crude as the roadblock earlier.
There were two three-meter-tall automated defense mechs, equipped with rotary machine guns and missile launchers.
A red laser scanning grid blocked the road.
[Warning. Illegal vehicle.]
[Please stop immediately for inspection. Otherwise, you will be destroyed.]
A cold, synthesized electronic voice rang out.
The mechs' barrels began to spin, emitting a heart-pounding hum.
Screech—
Ninth Master slammed on the brakes. The motorcycle stopped less than two meters from the warning line, tires dragging two black marks on the ground.
"These things don't recognize people!"
Ninth Master panted heavily. "Without a pass, they really will shoot!"
Su Qingxue jumped off the bike, raising her pistol and scanning the surroundings warily.
"A pass?"
Chen Mo looked at the blue light curtain.
Behind the light curtain, one could see waiters in tailcoats trimming the lawn, as if the apocalypse outside had nothing to do with them.
"We don't have such a thing," Su Qingxue said through gritted teeth. "Do we force our way in?"
"There are better ways to commit suicide," Ninth Master shook his head. "These two 'Gatekeepers' can turn us into sieves."
Just then, a dull vibration came from behind.
Chen Mo whipped his head around.
A few blocks away, that cloud of red energy had already caught up.
The high-rises along the way collapsed like dominoes.
Ruan Qiushui wasn't dead.
And she had caught their scent.
"Damn it, she's caught up!" Su Qingxue's face turned pale.
Wolves in front, tigers behind.
"Ninth Master, do you have explosives?" Chen Mo asked suddenly.
"I do, but the little C4 I have is only enough to blow up a toilet, it won't break this turtle shell!"
"No need to break it."
Chen Mo pulled a palm-sized piece of yellow explosive from Ninth Master's backpack and stuck it onto the motorcycle's fuel tank.
"Just making a mess here will be enough."
"What are you planning?" Ninth Master's eyes widened.
"If I were that doctor."
Chen Mo looked at the elegant figures behind the light curtain. "I certainly wouldn't like someone making a ruckus at the entrance of my restaurant."
"Detonate it."
After Chen Mo spoke, he grabbed Su Qingxue and dragged her behind a nearby piece of cover.
Ninth Master wasn't stupid either; he gave a strange cry and rolled to the other side.
The next second.
Ninth Master pressed the detonator.
BOOM!!!
The modified motorcycle's fuel tank was filled with high-energy fuel; this explosion was practically like a small tactical missile.
A giant fireball soared into the sky, and the shockwave directly overturned the two defense mechs.
Ear-piercing alarms instantly echoed throughout the entire block.
[Warning! Under attack!]
[Level One Defense Protocol activated!]
