128: Chapter 129 The Arrogant Li Ruonan
Jiang Jing recalled Li Ruonan's behavior just now, which revealed one thing unmistakably—she was jealous.
He chuckled with a slightly lecherous grin, stretched, and left his office.
In the hallway, everyone looked at Jiang Jing with adoring eyes, and the chorus of "Hello, President Jiang!" was endless.
Jiang Jing arrived at Li Ruonan's office door. Through the gap in the blinds, he saw the usually decisive Finance Director staring blankly at her computer screen, her fingers unconsciously twirling a lock of her hair.
He curled his lips into a smile and pushed the door open without even knocking.
"Director Li, slacking off during work hours?" Jiang Jing leaned against the doorframe, his voice filled with teasing amusement.
"Ah!" Li Ruonan sprang up from her chair like a startled rabbit, knocking over the coffee cup beside her in her panic.
Fortunately, it was empty and didn't cause any trouble. Even so, Li Ruonan still glared at Jiang Jing. "You—why didn't you knock!"
Jiang Jing strolled in and closed the door behind him. "I did knock. You were just too lost in thought to hear it."
He lied without changing his expression and pulled a handkerchief from his pocket to hand to her. "What were you thinking about so intently? Your face is all red."
Li Ruonan snatched the handkerchief and lowered her head to wipe the table, but the tips of her ears turned even redder. "None of your business! I was checking the third-quarter..."
"Were you thinking about my conversation with Leng Ba?" Jiang Jing suddenly leaned forward, bracing his hands on her desk, trapping Li Ruonan between himself and her chair.
The faint scent of male pheromones instantly enveloped Li Ruonan. She froze in place, her heart pounding like a drum.
At this distance, she could clearly see the curve of Jiang Jing's eyelashes and feel the rise and fall of his chest as he breathed.
She should have pushed him away, but her body felt as if it had been hit by a freezing spell.
"You... stop being so narcissistic!" Li Ruonan turned her face away, but her voice lacked its usual conviction. "I just feel bad for Li Xue. She likes you so much, yet you..."
Jiang Jing chuckled, his warm breath brushing against her ear. "Is that so? Then why is it that every time I flirt with other women, Director Li looks at me as if she wants to swallow me whole?"
"Nonsense!" Li Ruonan whipped her head back, almost bumping into the tip of Jiang Jing's nose.
She hurriedly leaned back, and her chair let out an overwhelmed creak. "I was just... just..."
"Just what?" Jiang Jing didn't retreat but advanced instead, his fingers gently lifting a stray lock of her hair. "Li Ruonan, don't tell me you are..."
"I don't like you at all!" Li Ruonan blurted out, then immediately realized what she had said. Her entire face flushed crimson instantly. "No! I mean..."
Jiang Jing suddenly straightened up and laughed heartily. "I didn't say anything. Why did Director Li confess it herself?"
Li Ruonan wished she could crawl into a hole in the ground.
As a black belt in taekwondo and a formidable Finance Director who dominated the business world, how did she become such a flustered little girl in front of this man?
This was so unlike her!
"Get out!" She grabbed a folder, making a motion to hit him. "I need to work!"
Jiang Jing easily caught the folder and took the opportunity to grab her wrist. "How is work more important than dating?"
His fingers gently caressed the delicate skin of her wrist, feeling her pulse racing. "Li Ruonan, do you know how cute you look when you're jealous?"
"Wh—who's jealous!" Li Ruonan tried to pull her hand back, but she couldn't muster any strength.
Jiang Jing watched her flickering gaze, then suddenly let go and stepped back half a pace. "Alright, since Director Li isn't interested in me, I guess I'll have to go to the appointment alone tonight."
"Appointment?" Li Ruonan's ears perked up. "What appointment?"
"Leng Ba said her friend opened a new restaurant and invited me to try the food." Jiang Jing sighed with feigned regret. "I was planning on bringing someone who knows good food, but since you..."
"Wait!" Li Ruonan stood up abruptly, then realized she was overreacting. She forced herself to stay calm and adjusted her collar. "I... I've been trying to lose weight lately and need to walk more. If it's food tasting, I can reluctantly accompany you."
Jiang Jing held back his laughter. "So reluctant? Never mind then, I'll just..."
"Jiang Jing!" Li Ruonan stomped her foot in anger. "You're doing this on purpose, aren't you!"
"What am I doing on purpose?" Jiang Jing looked innocent. "Trying to ask our Director Li out for dinner? Or trying to hear her call me a scumbag?"
"Smooth talker..." she muttered, though the corners of her mouth rose uncontrollably. "Is this how you usually hit on girls?"
Jiang Jing suddenly became serious. "No, only with you." He stepped forward and gently lifted her chin. "Li Ruonan, you are different from the others. I love seeing you acting all fierce..."
Li Ruonan's breath hitched.
"Cut the act..." She swatted Jiang Jing's hand away, but her voice softened. "How many women have you said these things to? Li Xue, Jiang Yan, and that female host..."
"Are you jealous?" Jiang Jing chuckled.
"No!"
"You don't mean that." Jiang Jing suddenly leaned in and whispered in her ear, "Seven o'clock tonight, I'll pick you up."
Having said that, he turned and left without giving Li Ruonan a chance to retort.
When he reached the door, he turned back to add, "By the way, people on diets can eat steak, right? I heard a certain place has great Wagyu."
The moment the door closed, Li Ruonan collapsed into her chair, covering her burning cheeks with both hands.
She was done for. She clearly knew this man was a player and overly amorous, yet she still couldn't help but be moved.
What was most terrifying was that he seemed to have seen through all her little secrets long ago.
"Jerk..." she cursed, biting her lip, but she had already started picking out earrings to match her dress in her mind.
The phone on her desk suddenly vibrated. It was a message from Li Xue: [Ruonan, are you free tonight? I want to take you out...]
Li Ruonan stared at the screen, a wave of guilt washing over her.
Her best friend had previously confided in her about her feelings for the same man, completely unsuspecting.
[I have to work overtime tonight] she replied with difficulty, [Can I hang out with you tomorrow?]
Putting down her phone, Li Ruonan walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked at the endless stream of traffic below.
The woman reflected in the glass had eyes full of longing; where was there any trace of the "heroine" she used to be?
"Just this once..." she whispered to her reflection. "Let me be a spoiled little girl for once."
