213: Chapter 214 Perhaps You'll Be Surprised Later
Jiang Jing's gaze fixed on the delivery worker, or more accurately, on his left leg.
Relying on his right leg and a crutch for support, he was struggling to take a meal box out of the insulated delivery box.
Although his movements appeared somewhat slow due to his inconvenience, he was extremely diligent.
He carefully checked the address on his phone, his brows slightly furrowed.
Jiang Jing watched him climb the stairs, struggling with his crutch; because it was an old residential complex, buildings under seven stories did not have elevators.
The delivery guy returned to his electric scooter and let out a sigh of relief, looking slightly exhausted, then immediately picked up his phone, impatiently starting to refresh the order acceptance page.
His fingers swiped rapidly, but his brows furrowed tighter and tighter as he unconsciously muttered under his breath: "...How did I fail to grab it again..."
Clearly, on a food delivery platform where algorithms and speed are paramount, his physical condition put him at a natural disadvantage.
At this moment, he seemed to notice Jiang Jing's lingering gaze and looked up at him.
Then, he quickly buried his head back into his phone screen, continuing to battle against the internet speed and reaction time that always seemed one step behind everyone else.
Jiang Jing did not hesitate any longer and walked over.
"Hey buddy, busy?" Jiang Jing struck up a conversation in a casual tone.
The delivery guy didn't even lift his head, his fingers still tapping rapidly on the screen, his tone carrying a sense of helpless anxiety: "Ah, yeah, grabbing orders. It's peak hour, it's too hard to grab them."
His attention was completely focused on that small screen which determined his income.
Jiang Jing watched him tap again and again, missing the popped-up orders each time because he was "too slow," and could clearly feel his increasingly obvious frustration and anxiety.
Finally, after missing out on another nearby "lucrative order," the delivery guy put down his phone in discouragement and let out a long sigh.
He looked up at Jiang Jing, revealing a face that appeared somewhat rough from exposure to the wind and sun, yet still retained a hint of toughness in his features; he looked to be under forty.
"Sorry about that, buddy, I was just busy grabbing orders." He smiled apologetically.
"It's fine, I understand." Jiang Jing also smiled, his gaze sweeping over the empty trouser leg and the crutch leaning against the scooter, "Seeing that you... seem a bit inconvenienced, yet you're still doing deliveries, it must be quite tough, right?"
Hearing this, the delivery guy looked down at his leg and patted it naturally, his tone open-minded: "Hey, I'm used to it. Can't just sit idle and expect the state to support me for a lifetime, right? I come from a military background; I have hands and feet, so I have to rely on myself whenever I can."
"You were in the military?" Jiang Jing asked, following the flow of conversation.
"Yeah, I spent a few years in the army." The delivery guy nodded, a flash of nostalgia and a subtle, hard-to-detect sadness passing through his eyes.
"Later, there was an accident, and I lost my leg. The pension and subsidies provided by the state are quite good, and the policies are supportive too—the reimbursement rate for medical expenses is high, and there are fee waivers for the kids' schooling."
He spoke very calmly, as if he were talking about something very ordinary.
But then, his tone turned slightly deeper: "It's just that... the family expenses are high. My elderly parents aren't in good health and need medication year-round, and my child is about to start middle school, so the costs are getting higher and higher."
"A few years ago, the child's mother passed away from illness, and the family relies solely on me... Relying only on the pension is tight, so I thought I'd earn a little more wherever I could, and ended up doing this."
Misfortune always strikes the most vulnerable.
Listening to this plain yet heavy account, Jiang Jing was silent for a moment.
He looked at the man before him, who, although bent by the weight of life, was still struggling to keep his spine straight, supporting his family in his own way.
He sighed and said sincerely: "I originally wanted to offer some words of comfort, but after hearing your story, I feel... any words of comfort would be superfluous. You are stronger than the vast majority of people I have ever met."
Hearing Jiang Jing's words, the delivery guy was stunned for a moment, then a cheerful smile appeared on his face.
That smile dispelled the exhaustion between his brows, revealing the frankness and toughness unique to a soldier: "Haha! You sure know how to talk, buddy! What comfort? No need for that!"
"We folks who have served in the military, what kind of hardship haven't we endured? This little difficulty is nothing! As long as you don't lose your resolve, there are always more solutions than problems! Nothing can truly defeat us!"
His optimism and resilience came from the heart and were full of strength.
Jiang Jing was also infected by him and started laughing along.
But as he laughed, a thought in his mind became increasingly clear and firm.
He remembered something he had seen in the System Mall a long time ago—[Neural Induction Prosthetics].
The price of 200 million was negligible to him, but its description was—perfectly connects with the human nervous system, just like it grew from within one's own body.
For the veteran in front of him, and for the thousands upon thousands of people like him who are disabled due to accidents but still struggling to live, what would this mean?
It means rebirth!
Having earned so much money and possessing a cheat like the system, it was time to do something to give back to this society.
"Buddy, how should I address you? Let's exchange contact information, shall we?" Jiang Jing had made up his mind and smiled as he took out his phone.
"My name is Li Jian." The delivery guy readily gave his name and also took out his old phone with a slightly cracked screen, "What about you, buddy?"
"Jiang Jing." Jiang Jing entered his name and number, then dialed.
Li Jian's phone rang. When he saved the number, he looked at the two characters "Jiang Jing," his brows slightly furrowed as he muttered: "Jiang Jing... This name sounds a bit familiar... Like I've heard it somewhere..."
But he was busy rushing to grab orders and taking care of his elderly parents and child every day; how would he have the time and energy to pay attention to financial news or gossip about billionaires on internet trending searches?
He just felt a vague impression, but he couldn't for the life of him remember who exactly it was.
He quickly cast this doubt to the back of his mind.
After saving the number, Li Jian smiled: "Brother Jiang, if you order takeout in this area in the future and see that I'm the one delivering, please don't rush me!" He joked.
Jiang Jing also laughed. He looked at Li Jian, his eyes meaningful: "Brother Jian, perhaps very soon, you will receive an unexpected surprise."
