Chapter 250: The Adversaries
The bed was still warm, sheets tangled and half hanging off the edge. The faint glow of the wardlights outside the palace windows bled through the cracks, painting soft lines across their bodies. Luna lay with her head on his chest, her hair spilling over him, damp strands sticking to his skin. Her breathing was steady now, the storm of earlier slowed to something quieter, more vulnerable.Lucifer stared at the ceiling, one arm draped across her back, his fingers tracing idle circles along her spine. He didn’t speak right away. For once, the silence didn’t feel heavy. It was fragile. Real.
"You’re quiet," Luna murmured, breaking it first. Her voice was low, husky, softened by exhaustion. "That’s rare. Usually you’ve got something wicked to say."
Lucifer’s lips twitched into the ghost of a grin. "Don’t get used to it. I’m just... thinking."
She tilted her head, resting her chin on his chest so she could look at him. The crimson in his eyes wasn’t glowing now, just steady. Weaker light, almost human. "About what?"
He exhaled through his nose, slow. "About what comes next. Facing him."
Luna didn’t need to ask who. She felt her stomach tighten. She pushed herself up a little, one hand resting on his chest for balance, her hair falling like a curtain around her face. "Your father."
Lucifer’s eyes narrowed slightly. The word father didn’t sound right to him. "The First Progenitor," he corrected, his voice flat but edged. "Damaris. The one who vanished. The one this entire bloodline was built on."
"Vanished," Luna repeated. "And now you’re going after him?"
Lucifer turned his head, finally looking at her. "I don’t have much of a choice, Luna. He’s not gone. He’s waiting. And if I don’t face him..." His jaw flexed. "This world won’t hold."
She studied him, her thumb absently brushing his collarbone. "How dangerous?"
He almost laughed, but it wasn’t humor. "Dangerous enough that I don’t know if I’ll come back."
The words sat heavy in the room, thicker than the shadows. Luna’s breath caught. "Then why do it? You’ve already fought wars, built armies, claimed thrones. You don’t need to—"
"I do," he cut in, not harsh but sharp, like steel. He sat up a little, leaning on his elbows, his eyes fixed on hers. "Because everything I’ve done leads to this. He’s not just my father, Luna. He’s the beginning of what I am. If I don’t face him, then I’ll never be more than his shadow."
Her lips parted, but no words came at first. She saw the weight behind his eyes, the way his voice carried something colder than fear. Resolve, but threaded with the kind of awareness that only came when you’d seen too much already.
Lucifer reached for her hand, squeezing it once. "But I’m not walking in alone. I’ve got friends. A brother. An army that would follow me into hell if I asked." His tone softened, the faintest curve of a smile pulling at his mouth. "What I’m worried about isn’t me."
Her brows furrowed. "Then what?"
"You."
That made her blink. "Me?"
He nodded, his thumb brushing across her knuckles. "If Adam dies, Luna..." He hesitated, the weight of the thought pressing down on him. "If Adam dies, the humans go with him. And that means you."
Luna froze. She felt her chest tighten, the weight of his words slamming into her harder than any threat could. Her voice came out low, uneven. "You’re saying... my life is tied to his?"
Lucifer’s gaze didn’t waver. "That’s what I’m afraid of."
She pulled her hand free, sitting up straighter, pulling the sheet around herself. Her expression hardened, though her eyes betrayed the flicker of unease. "So what? You think I’m just waiting to vanish if he falls?"
"I don’t want to think it," Lucifer said, sitting up fully now, his tone low but steady. "But you’ve seen what he is. Adam isn’t just another player in this world. He’s the axis holding humanity together. If that breaks, everything tied to him might break too."
"And you’re telling me this now?" Her voice rose, sharp.
"I’m telling you this because it matters," he shot back, his crimson eyes glowing now, brighter with emotion. "Because every time I look at you, I can’t shake it. I can fight gods. I can face my father. But if he dies and I lose you—" He stopped himself, his jaw clenching.
The silence burned between them. Luna’s hands tightened on the sheet, her knuckles white. For a long moment she didn’t speak, didn’t move. Then she let out a shaky breath, her tone softer when she finally broke it.
"So that’s what you’ve been carrying."
Lucifer leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees, his hair falling into his face. "I don’t care if I die fighting him. But I care if you’re taken from me because of something I can’t stop."
Her chest ached at his words. She reached out, brushing his hair back, forcing him to meet her gaze. "Then don’t make this about losing me," she said, steady now. "If Adam dies, if I go with him, then it happens. But I’m here now. With you. That’s all that matters."
He searched her eyes, crimson locking with steel-grey, and for once he didn’t argue. He just let the truth of her words settle in.
She leaned closer, pressing her forehead to his. "You’ve got a brother. You’ve got an army. You’ve got me. So don’t sit here worrying about what happens if everything falls apart. You fight. You always fight. And whatever comes, we’ll face it."
Lucifer closed his eyes, inhaling slow, her scent grounding him. When he exhaled, it was like letting go of something he’d been holding too long. He wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her closer, holding her like the world outside didn’t exist.
The moment lingered, quiet but charged. Outside, the wardlights flickered again, as if the realm itself was eavesdropping.
Luna broke the silence first, her voice lighter this time, almost teasing. "Besides... if I die with Adam, who’s gonna keep you from drowning in your own ego?"
Lucifer huffed a laugh, low and rough. "You think that’s your job?"
"Someone has to do it," she said with a smirk, brushing her lips against his jaw. "You’d be insufferable without me."
He smirked back, pressing a kiss to her temple. "Probably."
The air between them eased, the sharp edge of the conversation softening into something warmer. Still, the weight of it lingered in the back of their minds. The shadow of what was coming.
Lucifer leaned back against the headboard, pulling her into his lap, her back against his chest. His arms wrapped around her, his chin resting on her shoulder. "When it comes," he murmured, "when I stand in front of him... I need you to remember something."
Luna tilted her head slightly. "What’s that?"
"That no matter what happens, no matter what gets broken... you were the one thing I never wanted to lose."
Her breath caught, but she didn’t turn, didn’t let him see her eyes gloss over. She just covered his hands with hers, squeezing them tight.
"I’m not planning on going anywhere," she whispered.
They stayed like that, bodies pressed together, breaths syncing in the quiet. The night stretched long, heavy with the knowledge of what was coming. And yet, in that bed, in that fragile calm, it was just them. Two storms colliding, finding stillness if only for a moment.
Because when the dawn came, the world would not wait.
Elsewhere
The throne room of New Earth was drowned in white light, polished marble stretching into infinity, pillars etched with living scripture that shifted whenever one looked too long. At the heart of it, Adam sat upon his throne—a structure of obsidian veins and silver fire, pulsing with quiet authority. His eyes were closed, but his presence alone commanded the space, each breath he took bending the very air like the world inhaled with him.
Before him, rows of angels knelt in reverence. Their wings shimmered like fractured starlight, their hands still stained with the labor of centuries. They had built it—the Gate.
It towered at the far end of the hall, black metal interwoven with celestial gold, every edge humming with locked power. Its surface was not solid but liquid, rippling with the faint reflection of countless realms. The seal between planes had been undone, not by accident, but by Adam’s will.
An archangel stepped forward, bowing his head low. "The project is complete, my Lord. The adversaries you named... they will answer."
Adam’s crimson eyes opened slowly, twin embers in the vast brilliance. He didn’t speak at once. He only raised his hand, and with a gesture as simple as parting curtains, the Gate roared to life.
The chamber shook. Symbols ignited across the archway in burning script, voices whispered through the light, and then—darkness bled through. A fissure of shadow cracked across the portal, and from it, a figure stepped.
The first adversary.
He emerged barefoot, chains still clinging to his arms, body marked with runes of exile that flickered as they burned away. His eyes opened—void black, endless. The hall grew colder, the angels stiffened, and the Gate throbbed with hunger. Thɪs chapter is updatᴇd by NoveI-Fire.ɴet
Adam leaned back against his throne, his gaze steady, unshaken. "Welcome back," he said, his tone flat, carrying across eternity. "Your prison ends here. The war begins anew."
The adversary smiled, lips curling over teeth too sharp for a human mouth.
And the world felt the first tremor of what Adam had unleashed.
