337: Chapter 337 The Seed is No Good
Starting from the second evening, Zhou Kai no longer experienced that kind of uncontrollable restlessness after nightfall.
He was no longer transforming.
At night, he slept soundly for the entire evening, snoring loudly, and even Yang Ningcong managed to sleep peacefully along with him.
Xu Zhixia's explanation was that active transformation was equivalent to giving the body an outlet; once that beastly energy suppressed within the body was released, it would no longer uncontrollably push outward at night.
Put simply, if he trained enough during the day, he would behave himself at night.
This was good news for everyone.
Over the next few days, Zhou Kai turned the woods near the beach upside down.
He mastered the trick to using that body.
Every morning, he took off his clothes as his bones reorganized and his fur grew wildly, transforming into a three-meter-tall black giant beast that darted into the woods.
Relying on a sense of smell far surpassing ordinary people, the wild boars and goats on the island all became his prey.
Throughout the day, he would make four or five round trips between the Karst Cave and the jungle, and every time he came back, he was gripping a massive prey in his hands.
The material area of the Karst Cave was already piled high with the spoils scavenged over these past few days.
"Kaizi, you've worked hard." Lin Fan looked at Zhou Kai; when it came to finding food, Zhou Kai alone could match a whole group of them.
"Piece of cake!" Zhou Kai patted his chest. "My whole body feels uncomfortable now if I don't run for a day. Wandering around the woods more often is just right for venting my energy."
Before Lin Fan could speak, a line of crimson, bolded text suddenly popped up on his retina.
[The third batch of personnel will land on this island within twenty-four hours.]
[Countdown: 23:59:59]
The red numbers jumped before Lin Fan's eyes.
Lin Fan's gaze instantly turned cold.
He straightened his body, his gaze sweeping across the distant coastline.
Xu Zhixia was organizing the newly harvested hemostatic herbs, her peripheral vision catching Lin Fan's expression.
Having spent so much time together, she understood this man's body language.
She put down the herbs and walked over to Lin Fan's side. "Tomorrow marks the fifteenth day, right?"
Lin Fan nodded.
Xu Zhixia turned around to look at the distant sea surface. "Do you have a plan? Should we go set up traps on the beach in advance?"
"We can't use the old method anymore," Lin Fan began. "Your batch of people suffered a shipwreck and only prepared a bit of distress equipment, washing ashore half-dead. I just had to wait for rabbits by a tree stump and tie them up with ropes."
"This time is different. The prompt says they are landing on the island with preparation, which means they have already made preparations to be swallowed by the tsunami."
"Perhaps when they arrive here, they will all be conscious."
"And they have firearms. If we rashly go to the beach to ambush them, facing dozens of guns, our few people won't be enough to handle them."
"Ropes on the island are limited. Even if we're lucky and can knock down a few people, there's no way to control a large group of conscious armed personnel. The rope-binding tactic is completely ruined."
"There's one more thing." Lin Fan glanced deep into the woods. "Now that a large number of outsiders are landing on the island, those people definitely won't just sit and watch. They hold control over the mutated creatures, so they should come out to grab people."
Xu Zhixia crossed her arms over her chest. "Therefore, the outsiders' background is unknown, and there are also those people in the heart of the island. What we need to do is avoid their sharp edge and let them consume each other first."
"The Karst Cave has high terrain and is easy to defend and hard to attack. As long as we block the passage coming up, it will be very difficult for the people below to attack. With our abundant supplies, we can completely stay up here and wait to see how things develop."
Lin Fan looked at the Karst Cave piled high with supplies and shook his head.
"Defending can only save lives; it cannot break the deadlock." Lin Fan clenched his fists, feeling the power within his body. "I am currently at Triple Enhancement. Facing ordinary people or solitary mutated beasts, crushing them is no problem."
"But facing an organized armed team, triple the speed cannot dodge a dense rain of bullets, and both strength and speed are still not enough."
Xu Zhixia raised an eyebrow, sizing up Lin Fan. "You want to improve your strength? You can go into the woods to look for those mutated tubes. Perhaps there are still survivors who brought those tubes out, and you can take a gamble."
"I don't gamble with luck, and I have other methods to enhance my abilities. Why would I want to become half-human, half-beast?" Lin Fan turned his head, his gaze landing on Xu Zhixia with a meaningful look in his eyes.
Xu Zhixia felt somewhat uncomfortable under his gaze and took half a step back. "What are you staring at me for?"
"Dr. Xu." Lin Fan leaned forward. "We've been working day and night, toiling around the clock for so many days now, how come your belly still hasn't made any movement?"
As soon as these words came out, Song Ya's face instantly turned completely red, and she hurriedly lowered her head to get back to work.
Su Qingxue sat on the other side, let out a cold snort, and touched her own belly.
Xu Zhixia's expression remained unchanged as she met Lin Fan's gaze. "Sowing seeds without a harvest, are you blaming the land for being bad?" Xu Zhixia's voice was cold and clear.
Lin Fan leaned back against the stone wall, the corners of his mouth curling up. "The land is definitely good land; it was plowed deep enough, and the water was poured thoroughly."
"Then it must be that the seeds are no good." Xu Zhixia struck back unceremoniously, her tone carrying a professional diagnostic tone. "Low survival rate, poor activity. It is suggested that you rest more and eat less of those game meats with excessive internal heat."
Zhou Kai was holding back his laughter so hard that his shoulders trembled continuously, yet he didn't dare make a single sound.
Lin Fan wasn't annoyed either.
He stood up, walked over in front of Xu Zhixia, and looked down at her from above.
The shadow enveloped Xu Zhixia within it. "Whether it works or not, tonight we can change a few angles and have an in-depth discussion on this medical problem once more." Lin Fan lowered his voice, speaking in a volume only the two of them could hear.
Xu Zhixia tilted her head back, her fair neck forming a graceful curve.
There was not the slightest bit of retreat in the depths of her eyes; instead, she leaned closer by a few inches against Lin Fan's sense of oppression.
Xu Zhixia stared at the face that was only half a foot away from her.
"Lin Fan." Xu Zhixia raised her hand, her index finger pressing against Lin Fan's chest, pushing back the incoming force. "The fire is already burning at your tail, and you're still in heat in your head?"
Lin Fan stepped back half a step following the strength of her fingertip and straightened up. "Dr. Xu, my original intention was simply to survive on this island."
Lin Fan glanced at the beast meat on the ground. "Who would have thought that my bodily functions and the cheat given by the heavens would have such a unique bound upgrade method."
Xu Zhixia's eyes darkened slightly, as if she thought of something.
She bent down to pick up the back basket, shaking a few withered herbs inside out onto the ground.
"The medicine is not enough." She glanced at Lin Fan. "A new patch of Arhat grass is growing on the top wall of the cliff. You're coming with me to harvest it."
"Right now?"
"What, scared?" Xu Zhixia glanced toward Su Qingxue's direction, and what she meant by being scared couldn't be more obvious.
