13: Chapter 13 First Signs of Supernatural Abilities

Returning to the entrance of the pet store, the remaining few zombies were still uselessly scratching at the door frame.

Mo Yufei glanced over, his gaze suddenly pausing; the key to the shop door was actually still stuck straight in the keyhole.

It must have been right when The Apocalypse broke out; the shop owner had just arrived early in the morning and was preparing to open for business when the disaster suddenly struck. They likely met with misfortune on the spot, not even having the chance to pull out the key.

Fortunately, zombies only know how to crash into things with brute force; they have no idea how to turn a key. If they possessed that kind of intelligence, they would have long since broken open the cage doors and torn the pets inside to shreds.

Mo Yufei first raised his hand to activate his Storage Space, sweeping all the remaining zombies at the entrance into it. The surroundings instantly returned to a dead silence.

He raised his stiff hand, grasped the cold key in the door, and slowly turned the lock. With a soft click, the shop door opened in response, and he stepped inside.

But just as he stepped into the shop, a sharp, terrified scream suddenly exploded: "Don't eat me! Help!"

The sudden sound caused Mo Yufei to freeze, his already stiff body instantly tensing up. He whipped his head around to look toward the source of the noise.

He saw that on a bird perch atop a shelf, a brightly feathered Parrot was flapping its wings, its round eyes filled with fear. It shrieked again at the top of its lungs; it wasn't a living person at all, but clearly this frightened Parrot calling for help.

Mo Yufei forced two hoarse words out from his cracked lips: "Shut up!"

The noisy, squawking Parrot instantly froze. Its round eyes were filled with terror, and its small body uncontrollably shivered, its emerald green feathers with colorful patterns all bristling up.

The next second, it abruptly buried its head deep under its thick wings, huddled on the bird perch, not daring to move, and fell completely silent.

Seeing that the Parrot had finally settled down, Mo Yufei dragged his exhausted body and scanned the pet store slowly, his gaze vigilant and careful.

The shop was permeated with a faint scent of musk mixed with the stench of rot, and iron pet cages were placed everywhere.

As far as the eye could see, the first things that came into view were several zombie dogs locked securely in reinforced cages.

Large patches of their fur had fallen off, revealing the blue-gray, festering, and pus-oozing flesh underneath. Their murky, grayish-white eyes stared fixedly at the outside, fangs exposed, constantly emitting low growls.

Their claws frantically scratched at the iron cages, making harsh clanging sounds. Their bodies exuded a thick aura of the zombie virus, and their aggression was palpable, yet they were trapped tightly by the cages and unable to break free.

Beside these mutated zombie dogs, in several relatively clean cages, a few unmutated cats and dogs were huddled in the corners. Evidently, they had been badly frightened by the previous commotion and the frenzy of the zombie dogs; their bodies were tense, and their eyes were filled with panic.

Mo Yufei examined them one by one. That Parrot was far larger than an ordinary one and clearly a rare breed. There was also a black dog, which should be a Labrador; it lay obediently in its cage, ears drooping, and its eyes held a touch of timidity as it looked at Mo Yufei.

Not far away were two cats, curled up in the corner of their cage, their bodies trembling slightly. Mo Yufei didn't know much about pet breeds and couldn't recognize what kind of cats these were at all.

Both cats were white—one with short fur and one with slightly longer fur. They looked quite pretty, and Mo Yufei knew they certainly wouldn't be cheap.

Passing several rows of crooked pet cages, he discovered a few rabbits huddled in a ball in a cage in the corner.

Their snow-white and grayish-brown fur was messy. They stood their long ears up, watching Mo Yufei vigilantly, their bodies trembling slightly, but they still looked like normal animals, without the slightest hint of mutated ferocity.

In the small cage next to them, a White Ferret was also kept. Its entire body was snow-white and sleek, and its pair of black, bright eyes looked intelligent, though at this moment, it was also huddled in the corner of the cage from fear, not daring to make a sound.

Walking further inside, an independent area partitioned by glass came into view; it was the aquarium section of the pet store.

Mo Yufei stopped in his tracks, a rare flicker of pleasant surprise crossing his eyes.

Several large glass fish tanks were arranged neatly. The goldfish in the tanks swayed their colorful tails, nimbly weaving between the water plants. Small shrimp crawled slowly against the tank walls, and turtles were tucked into their shells, occasionally extending their limbs slowly. These animals in the fish tanks had no idea that the world outside had changed.

He leaned close to the glass tank to observe carefully. The insulating glass and the water body acted like a natural barrier, completely blocking the spread of the zombie virus.

Compared to the panicked cats and dogs in the cages, the terrified rabbits and White Ferret in the corners, and the frantically roaring zombie dogs in the cages nearby, this aquarium section had become the only clean and peaceful little world in this dilapidated The Apocalypse, where not even a trace of the virus's stench had permeated.

Mo Yufei's tense lips relaxed slightly. In this devastated The Apocalypse, it was truly rare to see such unpolluted living creatures.

Mo Yufei's gaze fell on those shivering rabbits in the corner, a hint of consideration flashing in his eyes.

He had always wanted to fully understand the characteristics of his own Storage Space, and these non-aggressive rabbits were the best experimental subjects.

He walked slowly to the rabbit cage, stared at a little snow-white rabbit inside, and silently thought "Store" in his mind.

The next second, with a slight movement of his intent, an invisible force wrapped around the white rabbit in the cage. In the blink of an eye, the previously curled-up rabbit vanished into thin air, leaving no trace.

Mo Yufei immediately focused his mind to perceive his Storage Space and clearly sensed that the white rabbit was resting securely in a corner of the space. It wasn't struggling at all, there was no movement, and even its breathing seemed to have stopped; it was in a completely static state.

The White Ferret, which had been huddled in the corner of the cage, docile and timid, suddenly erupted with fine, blue-white electric arcs all over its body, and the crackling sound of an electric current suddenly rang out.

Weak electric light jumped and flowed over its snow-white fur, enveloping its small body in a layer of pale blue light mist, and its originally black, bright eyes now even revealed a hint of electric light.
