108: Chapter 108 Death Cliff, the Only Way to Survive
Before dawn.
Qin Feng lay behind a sand dune eight hundred meters away from the electronic highland, like a lifeless rock.
The cold wind whipped up grit, striking his face like fine steel needles.
He had been lurking here for ten minutes.
Through his monocular, he had meticulously rehearsed the entire base's defensive deployment in his mind, frame by frame, dozens of times.
Infiltrating directly would be tantamount to suicide.
The perimeter of the base's wire fence was covered with invisible infrared sensors and microwave detectors.
The enemy's vigilance far exceeded his expectations.
The only breach point was that fifty-meter-high natural barrier—the vertical cliff.
This seemingly most impossible route often hid the deadliest traps.
Qin Feng's military rock climbing skills had reached an intermediate level; although it was night, he could still climb up if he was careful enough.
The next second.
He adjusted the magnification of his monocular to the maximum and began to carefully observe the cliff, inch by inch.
Sure enough.
In several extremely hidden rock crevices, he spotted the reflection of micro-cameras and some kind of automatic sensing device.
If he climbed rashly, he would be met by cold gun barrels extending from the cliff.
This was a perfect death trap.
Qin Feng's brows knitted tightly together.
Advancing was a dead end.
Retreating meant that Platoon Leader Long Zhan and his men would be trapped and left to die in Yangjiao Village.
What to do?
His brain, like an overloaded processor, was spinning frantically.
He began to analyze the base's energy supply, the patrol's supply routes, and even the brief few seconds of gap during the soldiers' shift changes at the sentry towers.
Half an hour later, an extremely bold, or perhaps even crazy, plan gradually took shape in his mind.
This plan was interconnected; if any part went wrong, it would mean total destruction.
Its success rate was less than ten percent.
But, this was the only path to survival.
"Platoon Leader, can you hear me?"
Qin Feng lowered his voice and contacted Yangjiao Village via the specially modified communicator.
"Yes! How is it on your end?" Platoon Leader Long Zhan's anxious voice came through.
"The situation isn't good. This place is an iron tortoise, with nowhere to bite into." Qin Feng's tone was calm.
"I need your cooperation."
"Speak!"
"In fifty minutes, I will send you a signal. Once you receive the signal, create as much commotion as possible in Yangjiao Village."
"Fire all your ammunition! Just treat it like setting off fireworks for the New Year."
"Remember, you must make the enemy believe that you are about to launch a desperate breakout."
There was silence on the other end of the radio for a few seconds.
"Understood." Platoon Leader Long Zhan's voice was extremely heavy.
He knew that this might be their last bit of ammunition.
"Chef, you..."
"Don't worry." Qin Feng interrupted him. "I never joke. Wait for my signal."
Ending the communication, Qin Feng began his first step of action.
Like a lizard, he pressed against the ground and crept silently toward an inconspicuous power box on the flank of the base.
That was the independent power source for the entire base's outer defensive system, including the deadly traps on the cliff.
To disable the traps, he had to cut off the power here.
But the area around the power box was one of the most heavily guarded zones.
Qin Feng lay prone in a gully fifty meters away from the power box, waiting quietly.
Ten minutes later, a four-man patrol team marched past him in perfect step.
Qin Feng's heart almost stopped.
He could even smell the scent of cheap cigarettes mixed with sweat on them.
The patrol team moved away.
There was only one chance.
He unhooked a grenade from his waist, but he didn't pull the pin.
He just used all his strength to throw the grenade with force toward the direction of the base gate.
The grenade traced a high arc in the air, and finally, with a "clatter," smashed against the metal door at the base entrance, emitting a crisp, loud sound.
"Who is it?!"
"Something is happening at the gate!"
The searchlights on the sentry towers instantly turned toward the gate.
Even the patrol team that had just passed by immediately turned around and rushed toward the gate.
Everyone's attention was drawn away.
Now is the time!
Like a cannonball fired from a chamber, Qin Feng leaped up from the gully; he covered the fifty-meter distance in less than six seconds!
He rushed to the power box without rushing to destroy the metal casing.
Instead, he pulled out a crude graphite bomb wrapped with military tape and wires from his bosom.
He had made it on the spot using graphite rods from several high-power batteries.
He precisely stuffed the bomb into the cooling fan intake of the power box.
Then, without looking back, he sprinted toward that death cliff!
Behind him, the graphite bomb detonated.
There was no flash, no loud noise.
Only a cloud of black powder was sucked in by the fan, instantly covering the entire internal circuit of the power box.
"Sizzle—"
A burst of dense electrical sparks flashed by.
On the cliff, the sensors and automatic machine guns hidden in the dark flashed their indicator lights crazily for a few moments, and then, they all went out.
They were paralyzed.
But Qin Feng knew that this paralysis wouldn't last long.
The backup power would start very soon.
He had less than three minutes!
Qin Feng strapped all his equipment to his back, took a deep breath, and gripped the cliff's rock with both hands.
The climb began!
Fifty meters in height was nothing to him usually.
But at this moment, every second felt as long as a century.
He dared not pause for even a second; every muscle in his body was tensed to the limit, and like a precision machine, he climbed upward frantically.
The wind whistled in his ears.
Sweat blurred his vision.
He could feel his stamina draining away rapidly.
Just when he was only five meters away from the top.
"Hum—"
On the cliff, the indicator lights that had just gone out suddenly lit up again!
The backup power had started!
"Damn it!"
Qin Feng cursed under his breath, his pupils constricting sharply.
He saw that in a rock cave not far above him, a pitch-black gun barrel was slowly turning toward him!
The shadow of death instantly enveloped him!
At the critical moment, Qin Feng kicked off the rock wall, forcing his body to shift half a meter sideways in mid-air!
"Tat-tat-tat!"
Bullets grazed past his body, striking a series of sparks on the rock he had just been clinging to.
The alarm sound rang throughout the entire base at this moment!
Exposed!
The alternating red and blue warning lights flashed crazily, illuminating the platform Qin Feng had just climbed onto like a dance floor in hell.
"Intruder! At the C-zone cliff platform!"
"Team 3, Team 4, seal all exits of the platform immediately! Snipers, take your positions!"
"Repeat, intruder detected!"
From the speakers inside the base came a roar in Russian, mixed with static noise.
Qin Feng didn't even have time to catch his breath; his Danger Perception shot straight to the top of his head.
He rolled, taking advantage of the momentum, and tumbled toward the cover on the inside of the platform.
Almost at the same time.
"Tat-tat-tat-tat!"
"Bang!"
Dense bullets and large-caliber sniper rounds, like a violent storm, slammed fiercely into the spot where he had just landed.
The concrete floor was blasted, sending debris flying and sparks spraying.
A stray bullet hit his black pot with a "clang," and the massive kinetic energy left Qin Feng's back numb, sending him rolling another two meters away.
"Damn, isn't this welcome ceremony a bit too grand?"
