10: Special Affairs Bureau envoy
At this moment, Lin Ran felt a headache coming on, as if countless needles were piercing her brain. Her body involuntarily weakened, and her legs almost lost all strength.
She swayed precariously, as if she would fall to the ground the next second.
Seeing this, Xie Chi immediately stepped forward, quickly supporting Lin Ran's shoulder and asking with concern, “Captain Lin, are you alright?
Your face is pale, and your eyes are sunken. Is it low blood sugar? I'll take you to the lounge to check.”
Lin Ran reluctantly managed to stand steady, rubbing her temples with her right hand, trying to alleviate the dizziness.
Lin Ran looked up at Xie Chi and said with a wry smile, “Thanks for your concern, Forensic Doctor Xie. Maybe I didn't rest well and stayed up too late!
I can still manage. Oh, right, why are you here?”
“Didn't the municipal bureau report to the provincial department yesterday that there weren't enough forensic personnel? It just so happened that I was the only Forensic Doctor on leave in the provincial department, so they asked me to come over and help first.” Xie Chi smiled indifferently, explaining why he was there.
“Oh, so that's how it is.” Lin Ran nodded, indicating understanding, then suddenly remembered something and quickly asked, “By the way, Forensic Doctor Xie, how are your injuries from the last ghost encounter? Are there any lingering effects?” Lin Ran's eyes were full of worry.
Xie Chi smiled and shook his head, reassuring her, “Don't worry! My injuries are much better.” Then, he quietly leaned closer to Lin Ran's ear and whispered, “The Director got a Revival Talisman from the Special Affairs Bureau, and after I applied it, my injuries were almost completely recovered.”
Hearing this good news, Lin Ran breathed a sigh of relief, a look of relief appearing on her face. “That's good!”
The two exchanged a smile, then walked into the conference room together.
Upon entering the conference room, Lin Ran and Xie Chi were surprised to find that it was already full of people. They quietly found seats and looked around, realizing that including them, there were a total of eleven people.
Director Ji saw that everyone had arrived, cleared his throat, and said, “I presume everyone knows the reason for calling you here today.” Everyone nodded, their faces unusually grim.
Director Ji continued, “The higher-ups attach great importance to this ‘DF001’ incident and have already established a special task force codenamed DF.
Lin Ran and Xie Chi, you will join this special task force as representatives of C City.”
Lin Ran and Xie Chi exchanged glances, then stood up together and said in unison, “Thank you for the organization's trust!”
“Good! Now, let's begin discussing the information currently revealed about the Underworld.” Just as Director Ji was about to speak, someone gently knocked on the conference room door.
Director Ji frowned and gestured for the person at the door to enter. “Please come in!”
It was Section Chief Qin. He walked up to Director Ji and whispered in his ear, “Director Ji, excuse me, Captain Lin needs to step out.
The Director has an important matter to discuss with her, and someone from above has also arrived.” After speaking, Section Chief Qin looked at Lin Ran, a hint of apology in his eyes.
Lin Ran was a little surprised, but immediately stood up and apologized to Director Ji, “Sorry, Director, I'll be gone for a moment!” Then she followed Section Chief Qin out of the conference room.
“No problem, go ahead!” Director Ji waved his hand helplessly.
“Mhm!”
C City Public Security Bureau Director's Office.
“Director Li, you called for me?” Lin Ran pushed open the door to the Director's office and walked in, finding Director Li sitting at his desk.
She walked up to Director Li and saluted.
“Xiao Ran! Come, have a seat.” Director Li gestured to the chair beside him.
Lin Ran sat down, looking at the Director in confusion, “Director, is there something you need me for?”
At this moment, she noticed that besides the Director, there was also a man in military uniform standing to the side in the office. He was about thirty-five years old, tall and handsome, with a dignified expression.
“Xiao Ran, let me introduce you to this comrade.” The Director pointed to the man and said, “This is Comrade Nie Xingyuan, Team Leader of Special Operations Group Seven.”
Lin Ran stood up and saluted Nie Xingyuan, “Hello, Team Leader Nie!”
Nie Xingyuan returned a military salute, “Captain Lin, I've long heard of your reputation.”
Lin Ran smiled a little awkwardly, “You flatter me, Team Leader Nie.”
The Director continued, “Xiao Ran, I called you here this time to understand the situation regarding the ‘DF001’ incident. You and Team Leader Nie can have a good chat; I have something to attend to and need to step out for a bit.”
After speaking, the Director hurried out of the office.
Lin Ran looked nervously at Nie Xingyuan, then at the Director's retreating back, unsure where to begin.
Nie Xingyuan broke the silence, “Comrade Lin Ran, don't be nervous. We just want to understand some things.”
Lin Ran took a deep breath, calming herself down, “Team Leader Nie, I will fully cooperate with your work. What would you like to know?”
Nie Xingyuan nodded, getting straight to the point, “First, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the ‘DF001’ incident.”
Lin Ran pondered for a moment, then began to detail the clues and conjectures she currently possessed. She analyzed everything from the complainant's description of the Underworld, the results of the on-site investigation, the characteristics of the Ghost Messengers, and possible correlations.
After listening, Nie Xingyuan frowned slightly and fell into deep thought. After a while, he slowly spoke, “Captain Lin's analysis is very reasonable, but currently, the clues we have are limited, and we need more conclusive evidence to confirm all of this.
As far as I know, the ‘DF001’ incident seems to be related to some mythical legends, which means we might need to use some special methods to verify it.”
“Special methods?” Lin Ran asked curiously.
Nie Xingyuan nodded and explained, “That's right, the Special Affairs Bureau possesses some special skills and equipment that can deal with regular (Tier 2 and below) ghosts.
Even if the Xuanmen has confirmed the real existence of the Underworld, the Special Affairs Bureau still needs to confirm the authenticity of the Underworld through precise investigation, to prevent being misled by ghosts staging a self-directed play.”
Hearing this, Lin Ran's eyes lit up. The special abilities of the Special Affairs Bureau might be the key to solving this mystery.
“That's wonderful!” Lin Ran said excitedly, “With the assistance of the Special Affairs Bureau, we will definitely find the answers faster.”
However, Nie Xingyuan's expression became serious, and he solemnly reminded her, “However, this mission may involve some dangers, and you must be fully mentally prepared.
After all, the existence of the Underworld affects the order of the entire world. If it's fake, then there must be unknown dangers hidden within.”
Lin Ran's expression grew serious, “From the moment I decided to join the Criminal Police team, I had already cast aside my personal safety.”
Nie Xingyuan clapped and praised, “Thank you for joining, Captain Lin. The organization needs you!”
