47: Chapter 47 Frank's Plans

Her father's words made Fiona frown, and even sparked a bit of impatience.

She replied coldly, "How would I know?"

"You don't know?"

"I don't know, I didn't ask!"

Frank stared at his eldest daughter, unwilling to give up, and continued to ask, "You didn't ask?"

"Didn't ask."

"And you just moved in like that?"

Fiona was getting impatient with his questioning. "I had nowhere else to go. He let me stay, so I stayed. What's the problem?"

Frank was silent for a few seconds. Then he leaned back into his chair, a strange expression appearing on his face. It looked a bit like... gratification.

Immediately after, Frank asked, "Fiona, what do you think of him as a person?"

Fiona felt it was inexplicable. "What do you mean, what do I think of him?"

"I mean..." Frank gestured with his hands. "What's Shaun like? Is he a good guy? Is he reliable?"

Fiona stared at him. "Frank, what are you actually trying to say?"

Frank took a deep breath. "I want to say... he's a decent cop."

Fiona waited for him to continue.

"I've met a lot of cops," Frank continued. "In Chicago, in New Orleans, everywhere."

"Most of them are just coasting, ignoring what they should be handling and sticking their noses where they don't belong. But this Shaun... he's different."

"That day under the tree, his partner gave me twenty dollars. I could tell from the look in his eyes that he was looking at me strangely. That guy was already keeping an eye on me back then, which shows he's very smart and knew I was there to do something."

Honestly, Shaun only noticed Frank that day simply because he was Frank. In the shock of that moment, he barely had the capacity to care about why Frank was there. Besides... that jackass Frank wouldn't be up to any good anyway.

But Frank didn't know any of this, and he continued with his own line of thought. "Later, he helped me find you, right? You told me he answered your call and came to pick you up without a second thought."

Fiona nodded. "Yes."

"That settles it then." Frank slapped his thigh. "That's just the kind of person he is. He doesn't say much, but he'll help you."

He looked at Fiona, his eyes suddenly becoming a bit intense. "Fiona, you..."

Fiona raised her hand. "Stop. I know what you're going to say. Stop."

Frank didn't stop. "Haven't you thought about it? You're living here now, and he hasn't asked for any conditions, hasn't asked you to do anything. Where else are you going to find someone like that these days?"

Fiona glared at him. "Frank, you're my dad. Are you trying to sell me on a man?"

"It's not selling!" Frank said anxiously. "I just think you're not young anymore, and you've spent all these years taking care of the family without looking after yourself. Now that there's finally someone reliable..."

"Shut up." Fiona stood up, walked to the window, and turned her back to him.

Frank continued from behind her. "Look, he's a cop, stable job. He has a house... and such a big house at that." "He's a good person, reliable. You're living here, spending time together every day..."

Fiona couldn't help it anymore as she listened. "Frank! Do you have no shame?"

Frank shrugged. "None."

Fiona was choked up by his response. She opened her mouth, wanting to scold him, but for a moment, she didn't know what to say.

Frank looked at her, his eyes quite serious. He said, "Fiona, I'm being serious."

"I haven't taken care of you kids in my life, and I know I don't deserve to be a father. But this time... I truly want what's best for you." "That Shaun, I'm pretty good at reading people. He's a good man."

Fiona still didn't respond. But in her mind, Shaun's face suddenly flashed by.

The way he said "Get in the car" at the hotel entrance that day. And just now... standing at the doorway, watching her and Frank argue without saying a word, yet his gaze was at least not one of disgust.

Fiona suddenly felt a bit agitated. She shook her head and said, "You're overthinking it. He's not interested in me."

Frank was confused. "How do you know?"

Fiona pursed her lips. "Because... the way he looks at me is the same way he looks at that female cop."

Frank frowned. "Which female cop?"

Fiona said, "The one with the cold face, named Ballard. She's living here now too."

Frank's eyes widened. "She's living here too?" "Yes." "Living in this house?" "Yes."

Frank fell silent. After a few seconds, an expression of envy appeared on his face, and he muttered, "This kid is alright..."

Fiona kicked him. "What are you thinking?!"

Frank held his leg, grimacing in pain. "I was just saying!"

Fiona glared at him. But inside, that thought couldn't be suppressed. Shaun looks at Ballard the same way he looks at me. "What does that mean?" "Is it..." "Not interested in her?" "Or not interested in anyone?"

Fiona was agitated again. She walked to the window and looked at the moon outside. Frank, behind her, holding his leg, whispered, "Anyway, I think he's a good guy."

Fiona ignored him. But in her mind, Shaun's face wouldn't go away.

Shaun stood in the first-floor study, with several documents brought out from the Technical Team spread out in front of him.

Ballard leaned against the desk, holding a cup of coffee in her hand; this was her third cup tonight. She stared at the documents, her brows furrowed tightly.

After a long while, she asked, "So you're saying White was indeed looking for that treasure, and regardless of whether he was a dirty cop or whatever, he was investigating this matter right up until he died?"

Shaun had clearly told Ballard everything he heard from the witch. Of course, he wouldn't specifically point out it was the witch's treasure; he just simply called it treasure.

At this moment, he nodded and asked, "What do you think?"

Ballard thought for a moment. "Two possibilities. First, he was a dirty cop working for the Colombians, and wanted to snag the treasure on the side. Second, he wasn't a dirty cop, and investigating this treasure was his own business, and his cooperation with the Colombians was something else entirely."

Shaun thought this made some sense and was just weighing which possibility was more likely when, the next second, that book in his mind suddenly lit up. The golden book opened automatically, the pages rustling as if blown by the wind.

Shaun was stunned for a moment. Then he saw that page. 【Character Profile: Fiona Gallagher】 Current Favorability: 55 → 65

Shaun stared at the number, his eyes widening. What was going on? Wasn't it just 55 a moment ago? How did it jump all the way to 65?

He flipped up and saw the notes on the change in favorability... 【Favorability Change Record】 You remained silent when she was arguing with Frank + 8 Her father said you are a good person + 5 She noticed you look at Ballard the same way you look at her - 0 (No points deducted, but she cared about it) She remembered how you looked when you picked her up + 5

Shaun: "..." 【Current Favorability: 65 / 100】 【Note】 She verbally scolded Frank for having no shame. But in her heart, she is thinking of you. Wondering why you look at her the same way you look at others. Wondering if you are like this with everyone. Wondering... Forget it, a woman's heart is as deep as the ocean. Keep being bewildered.
