82: Chapter 82 A new supreme ruler is needed!
The four of them caught their breath for a moment, then Madison stood up and walked over to Shaun.
She asked: "What you just…"
Before she could finish, Shaun interrupted her: "Don't say it."
Madison glanced at him and didn't say anything more.
Over there, Cordelia helped Fiona stand up: "Help me get her into the car."
Shaun walked over and, together with Cordelia, helped Fiona up.
She was very light, so light she felt weightless.
Madison opened the car door, and the two of them placed her in the backseat.
Fiona leaned against the seat, eyes closed, motionless.
Cordelia sat in, supporting her shoulders.
Madison closed the back door and walked around to the passenger seat.
Shaun quickly started the engine.
The car drove away from the swamp, heading toward Robichaux Manor.
In the rearview mirror, the swamp mist was still churning, as if something inside was breathing.
Shaun gripped the steering wheel, but his mind was far from at ease!
Fiona… it looked like she was about to fall, and if the new Supreme Witch couldn't successfully inherit the power, the world of witches would likely be doomed.
It wasn't that Shaun cared that much about this.
It was just that in this world, with Vampires and devils everywhere, he had the best relationship with the witches, so naturally, he didn't want anything to happen to them.
But the problem now was… the natural aging of the Supreme Witch seemed to be inevitable.
…
When the car drove back to Robichaux Manor, the sun had fully risen.
Golden light spilled onto the oak-lined driveway, illuminating the leaves on both sides.
But no one in the car was looking at the scenery.
Shaun parked the car in front of the main house and killed the engine.
His mouth still had dried blood on it, and the dull ache in his chest with every breath reminded him of how reckless the earlier confrontation had been.
Madison pushed open the car door, walked around to the backseat, and helped Fiona out with Cordelia.
Fiona's face was still so pale, her eyes closed, her breathing weak, but she was still alive.
They helped her into the hall and placed her on the sofa.
Cordelia took a blanket and covered her, then went to pour a cup of hot water, standing by the side with the cup, not knowing whether she should feed it to her or not.
Her hands were trembling, and some water spilled out, dripping onto the carpet.
Madison stood at the other end of the sofa, arms crossed, watching Fiona, her face pale, lips pressed together, not saying a word.
Queenie came down from upstairs, saw the scene, and the chips in her hand dropped to the floor; she didn't pick them up.
The hall was extremely quiet.
The fireplace wasn't lit, and sunlight shone in through the windows, casting warmth on them, but the atmosphere was as cold as an ice cellar.
Cordelia spoke first: "What do we do now?"
Her voice was very soft, as if she were asking herself, or perhaps asking everyone.
No one answered.
Madison looked at Fiona, her lips moved, but she didn't say anything.
Cordelia sat down, held Fiona's hand, and lowered her head.
Queenie stood on the stairs, looking from one to the other, not knowing what to say.
Shaun leaned against the wall, the dull ache in his chest still lingering.
He wiped the corner of his mouth, the dried blood scab smearing on the back of his hand.
Seeing that no one was speaking, Shaun spoke up: "There is no other way right now."
Everyone looked at him.
"The power of the Supreme Witch will not disappear," Shaun said. "It only transfers, passing from one generation to the next. Fiona is failing, so there must be a new Supreme Witch."
Cordelia looked up at him.
Something was changing in those gentle eyes… not surprise, but fear.
"The new Supreme Witch," Madison's voice was very soft, "who is it?"
Shaun looked at Cordelia.
After a pause, he firmly spat out one word…
"You!"
The hall became even quieter, as if even the sunlight had stopped.
Cordelia's face turned white instantly, even whiter than Fiona's.
She opened her mouth, but couldn't say anything.
Madison looked at her, then at Shaun, then back at Cordelia.
"Cordelia?" Madison's voice changed a little, "She…"
Shaun interrupted directly, his tone extremely firm: "She is Fiona's daughter, the bloodline of the Supreme Witch is in her, and the power will pass to her sooner or later."
Cordelia lowered her head, looking at her own hands, those hands were trembling.
She said in a very soft voice: "I'm not ready yet, my power isn't enough, I…"
Shaun knew that he couldn't let Cordelia hesitate now!
Besides…
Cordelia was meant to be the next Supreme Witch anyway!
So Shaun interrupted immediately: "Marie Laveau won't wait for you to be ready, Elizabeth won't wait for you to be ready, and whatever is behind that low-level demon won't wait for you to be ready either."
Cordelia stopped talking.
She held Fiona's hand, gripping it very tightly.
Madison walked over, stood beside Cordelia, and placed a hand on her shoulder.
Although she didn't speak, she was giving Cordelia strength.
Cordelia looked up at her.
Taking a deep breath, then another deep breath, Cordelia's hands stopped trembling.
"I need time."
"You don't have time. You must start the inheritance ritual immediately!"
Cordelia had been very nervous, but being pushed by Shaun like this, she had no choice but to bite the bullet.
After a long silence, something in Cordelia's eyes changed…
It wasn't fear, it was determination.
She said: "I need one person."
"Who?"
Cordelia stood up, released her hand from Fiona's arm, and said: "Myrtle Snow, the President of the Witches' Council. She is the only one qualified to preside over the Supreme Witch inheritance ritual."
Madison frowned: "The redhead? The Old Hag's friend?"
Cordelia glanced at her. "She is not 'the redhead.' She is the President of the Witches' Council, one of the people my mother hates the most, and also… one of the most upright people."
Shaun thought of Myrtle Snow from American Horror Story.
Red wig, exaggerated clothing, talking as if she were acting.
But she had one skill… she could see through lies.
Fiona Goode feared her, not because of how strong her power was, but because she could see everything and would say everything.
Shaun asked: "Can she come?"
Cordelia had already walked to the coffee table and picked up her phone: "She must come."
The phone rang three times and was answered.
Cordelia took a deep breath: "Myrtle, it's me."
A woman's voice came from the other end of the line, hoarse, carrying a dramatic tone that could be heard even through the receiver.
"Cordelia? My dear child, why are you calling at this hour? What good deed has your mother done again?"
Cordelia closed her eyes: "She is failing."
There was a silence on the other end of the line for a second.
The hoarse voice changed, no longer dramatic, but a serious, low voice.
"What did you say?"
"The power of the Supreme Witch is fading, and her body is failing too." Cordelia's voice trembled, "We need you, we need you to preside over the inheritance ritual!"
