160: Jiang Fei listens to gossip

To lure One-Eyed Dragon out and give him a chance for revenge, Jiang Fei went out every day, wandering around.

Occasionally, she would overhear passersby talking.

“Have you heard? A murderer has appeared in the Safety Shelter, specifically targeting elderly people over 60. My grandpa is so scared he doesn’t dare to leave his room.”

“I know about this. It rains every day, and now there’s a murderer. Can the authorities even guarantee our safety anymore?”

“Be content. At least the Safety Shelter’s drainage system is excellent. Otherwise, if there was another flood, you and I would both die.”

The humid, rainy weather made people feel gloomy, and with the added threat of a murderer, the atmosphere in the Safety Shelter was particularly oppressive.

For two consecutive weeks, neither Jiang Fei nor Crippled Wang had found any trace of One-Eyed Dragon.

That bastard was too patient.

Unwilling to waste any more time, Jiang Fei decided to let nature take its course.

On this day.

After receiving news from Crippled Wang and Yao Damang that they were delivering gold, Jiang Fei went downstairs to apartment 203 to collect it first.

System: [Ding—Detected gold: 660,000 grams]

It was all thanks to the blackfish and river crabs that boosted the revenue of both stores.

It seemed she still needed to sell more aquatic products.

Thinking this, Jiang Fei drove to the warehouse on Ping An Back Street.

Crippled Wang and the others left after depositing the gold.

Opening the door and entering, the first floor was filled with boxes of gold. Jiang Fei immediately put them into the Supermarket.

[Ding—Detected gold: 23,185,000 grams]

[Current unlock progress: 99%]

Jiang Fei’s eyes widened in shock.

They pushed the progress bar to 99% in one go? Did they rob a gold vault?

She couldn't help but pull out her walkie-talkie to contact A Meng.

“How much gold did your boss deliver today?”

A Meng: “Over nine thousand kilograms.”

“Besides selling live fish, live crabs, and medicinal herbs, he also sold some of the supplies he looted from the restaurant.”

“Oh, Miss Jiang, the boss said the goods are almost sold out. He asked me to tell you to restock when you have time.”

“I’ll deliver them tomorrow or the day after.” Jiang Fei turned off the walkie-talkie and went upstairs to take a look.

There was only that giant golden cat.

What a pity, just 1% short of unlocking a new area.

Closing the warehouse door, Jiang Fei didn’t drive, but walked to Ping An Supermarket.

There weren't many customers in the store.

Yao Jin was wiping dust off the shelves, and Su Liuyuan was in the cashier’s booth calculating accounts.

Jiang Xiaoshi and a five or six-year-old boy were playing marbles in the open space.

The little boy had delicate features. He was the child Lu Yu rescued on the day of the sandstorm.

Yang Zhanguo’s son, Hao Hao.

Jiang Fei walked to the cashier’s booth and quietly asked Su Liuyuan, “Why is Hao Hao here?”

“You haven’t been to the store recently, so you don’t know. Yao Damang brought Hao Hao out to play a few days ago, but he had something urgent come up, so he left the child at the store.”

“Hao Hao and Xiao Shi are about the same age and get along well, so Hao Hao often comes to find him.”

“Every day at 5 PM, Yang Zhanguo sends someone to pick up Hao Hao.”

Su Liuyuan couldn't help but exclaim, “Yao Damang’s social skills are truly amazing. In such a short time, he’s become like brothers with Yang Zhanguo.”

“Yang Zhanguo not only entrusts his child to him with peace of mind but also introduced a lot of business, all big orders. A single 10-year-old ginseng sold for over two hundred kilograms of gold.”

No wonder there was so much gold in the warehouse.

Planning to have dinner at the branch store tonight, Jiang Fei sat on a chair by the door, cracking melon seeds and enjoying the rain.

Suddenly, her sleeve tightened.

Hao Hao had walked up to Jiang Fei without her noticing, gently tugging her sleeve.

“Big sister, have some candy.”

His small hand opened, revealing three candies wrapped in colorful plastic paper in his palm.

“Dad says we should thank those who help us. Big Brother Lu saved me, you rescued us, and you even gave us energy bars and water. What gift do you like?”

“I’ll bring it to you next time.” Hao Hao looked at Jiang Fei with a serious expression.

Looking like a miniature adult, Jiang Fei found it amusing and gently ruffled his hair.

“You don’t need to give me a gift. Just living safely and soundly is enough.”

She wouldn’t stoop to swindling gold from a child.

Hao Hao repeated Jiang Fei’s words, handed her the candies, and then went back to play with Jiang Xiaoshi.

Jiang Fei unwrapped and ate one candy.

It was sweet.

Just as she was about to give the remaining two candies to Su Liuyuan and Yao Jin, her peripheral vision caught sight of a familiar person.

Across the street.

Chen Fengping held an umbrella in one hand and pushed a wheelchair with the other, entering a store that sold infant products.

Sitting in the wheelchair was Chen Wenwen.

She wore a large green raincoat, her face was weathered, her expression blank, as if she were a puppet at someone’s mercy.

Su Liuyuan also saw Chen Fengping and Chen Wenwen through the window and clicked his tongue, “These two are here again.”

Jiang Fei turned her head in confusion, “You’ve seen them?”

“They came last week.”

With a child in the store, it was not appropriate for the upcoming conversation. Su Liuyuan walked to the door, lowered his voice, and said to Jiang Fei:

“I know all the shop owners nearby. That day after they left, I went to inquire.”

“Chen Wenwen is pregnant. I heard she hooked up with a single man who has a proper job in the Safety Shelter, earning thirty to forty points a month, and he’s not short on supplies.”

“What’s funny is that the shop owner had previously received flyers from Chen Fengping and often patronized Fang Yan’s business. He told me that Chen Wenwen’s legs were broken by Chen Fengping.”

“Chen Wenwen wanted to kill Chen Fengping, but then Chen Wenhao suddenly went crazy and ruined her plan.”

“Chen Fengping, enraged, broke Chen Wenwen’s legs, cut out her tongue, and forced her into prostitution. She was tormented into a stupor until she met that single man and became pregnant.”

“Every time Chen Fengping goes to the store, he brags to the owner, saying that as long as Chen Wenwen gives birth to a son, he’ll be set for the rest of his life.”

After sharing the gossip, Su Liuyuan added, “Fang Yan was played to death last month, and Chen Fengping threw her body in the trash can.”

Jiang Fei only felt a sense of satisfaction.

Trash belongs in the trash can.

Just then, Chen Fengping emerged from the opposite store. Seeing Jiang Fei sitting at the storefront, he pushed the wheelchair over.

He held his head high, unable to conceal his smugness.

“I want to buy something.”

“Get me three boxes of self-heating hotpot.”

No harm in making a profit.

Jiang Fei gestured for Su Liuyuan to bring them over and quoted a price, “1000 grams of gold.”

It was ten times the normal price.

To vent his anger, Chen Fengping didn’t care about the high price at all. He casually pulled out two 500g gold bars and threw them over.

These were given to him by his future son-in-law.

If his unfilial daughter wouldn't help him, he still had Chen Wenwen!

Although life wasn't as good as before, it was much better than for ordinary survivors.

Chen Fengping feigned concern, but in reality, he was subtly showing off to Jiang Fei:

“How hard it is for you to run two stores by yourself. If you ask me, you should be like your sister and find a good husband. We have meat to eat for every meal now, more than we can finish even if we eat until we’re full.”

“I am your father, after all. I happen to know a few promising young men. I can introduce you.”

“Promising young men? More like your johns.” Jiang Fei’s gaze was mocking, and she jabbed at Chen Fengping’s heart with her words:

“A eunuch who sells his wife and daughter has no right to call himself my father.”

“If you don’t get out now, I’ll help you.”

Su Liuyuan picked up the mop, understanding her perfectly.

Chen Fengping was so angry at Jiang Fei that his liver ached, and he was afraid she would actually resort to violence, so he could only suppress his anger and remain silent.

Just as he was about to push the dull Chen Wenwen away, a Jetta car stopped across the street.

“Son-in-law! I’m here!”

The man who got out of the car ran over in a raincoat: “Uncle Chen, why did you come over here?”

When she clearly saw the man’s face, Jiang Fei froze.

Could this world be too small?
