197: Jiang Fei: Eat more and talk less

Old Mrs. Xu ran towards Jiang Fei.

Xu Qianyao followed behind her, carrying a thermos in his left hand and a bundle of chopsticks in his right, occasionally saying, “Grandma, slow down.”

“Little Jiang, I just made some dumplings, they’re cabbage and egg filling. You, Xiao Yu, and Chu Xia should eat them while they’re hot.”

Old Mrs. Xu brought over chopsticks and the thermos, telling Jiang Fei and the other two to eat the dumplings.

“The old saying goes, people leaving on a journey should eat dumplings before getting in the car. It means they will return safely and smoothly.”

“Kyoto Base is far, and we don’t know what will happen along the way, so you must pay attention to safety.”

Jiang Fei nodded, her heart feeling warm.

“Grandma, if you don’t have enough supplies, or if you need help with anything, go to 0-04 to find Su Liuyuan, or you can contact him with a walkie-talkie.”

Old Mrs. Xu gently patted Jiang Fei’s hand: “Qian Yao has arranged everything, you don’t need to worry about me.”

After the three finished their dumplings, Xu Qianyao took the tableware and escorted Old Mrs. Xu home.

Jiang Fei and Xiao Chuxia got into the RV.

Lu Yu drove to the entrance of 1-05 to wait for Xu Qianyao.

A few minutes later, Xu Qianyao came out of his house and got into the police car parked by the road.

His luggage had already been placed in the car beforehand.

The two cars drove one after another towards the Safety Shelter’s entrance and exit.

Upon arrival, Jiang Fei looked through the car window and saw more than a dozen military trucks, as well as two small off-road RVs.

One RV was for Director Ning, and the other for the accompanying medical staff.

One truck was loaded with supplies the team would need on the road.

The remaining compartments were empty, to be used for the medicine collected from Kyoto.

Director Ning only brought over a hundred people this time.

Excluding those responsible for driving, the remaining Comrades sat in the rear compartments of the trucks.

On average, there were seven or eight people in each compartment, with ample space, allowing them to lay out bedding and rest comfortably.

The Comrades, dressed in plain clothes, were conducting final inspections on all the vehicles.

Xu Qianyao handed his police car over to the staff at the entrance and exit, then took his luggage to Director Ning’s RV.

At 19:00, the team departed on time.

Jiang Fei and the others had eaten dumplings before getting in the car, so they weren’t hungry.

They had slept in the afternoon, so they weren’t tired either. Xiao Chuxia sat on the sofa, looking outside.

The car lights illuminated the surroundings.

Occasionally, they would see shriveled mummies, or fresh corpses riddled with holes from insect bites.

Xiao Chuxia, who used to be afraid and terrified, was now brave enough to pull Jiang Fei into conversation.

“Miss, I just saw a mummy that looked a lot like the dried rat meat we made in Yulan Garden.”

“I’ve been eating too well lately, I’m actually a little nostalgic for the taste of rat meat.”

Jiang Fei: “...”

How did Xiao Hua Lao connect those two things?

It was Xiao Chuxia’s first time leaving the Safety Shelter, and she shared everything she saw with Jiang Fei, her little mouth chattering incessantly.

Jiang Fei, feeling as if she was surrounded by flies, directly took out various snacks from the cabinet to stuff Xiao Chuxia’s mouth.

She also grabbed a bottle of energy drink and brought it to Lu Yu in the driver’s seat.

At midnight, Jiang Fei’s walkie-talkie rang.

It was Xu Qianyao informing everyone to rest in place and depart again at six in the morning.

With Comrades patrolling outside the cars for the night, there was no need to worry about safety, so Jiang Fei and the other two locked their car doors and went to sleep.

Early the next morning, Jiang Fei woke up first to make breakfast.

Each person had a bowl of mushroom noodle soup, with a piece of braised beef. Xiao Chuxia also had a serving of pan-fried rat meat.

Fulfilling Xiao Hua Lao’s wish to eat rat meat.

After eating and tidying up, six o’clock arrived, and Lu Yu returned to the driver’s seat to continue driving.

Suddenly, the truck in front stopped, and faint gunshots could be heard.

They were at the very back of the convoy and couldn’t see what was happening ahead.

Jiang Fei contacted Xu Qianyao via walkie-talkie: “What’s going on up front?”

Xu Qianyao: “A few hungry people blocked the road, trying to snatch food, and were shot dead by the Comrades.”

“We have now left the official controlled area of Su Province, and there will be more and more hungry people.”

“To avoid delaying the journey, Director Ning has instructed us to open fire and resolve the situation if a warning is ineffective.”

“If you find any hungry people following behind, shoot them directly.”

“Okay.” Jiang Fei turned off the walkie-talkie.

Not long after, the vehicles in front restarted.

When she saw the several emaciated corpses discarded by the roadside, Xiao Chuxia felt a pang of pity, but she also understood.

Once you show kindness to the hungry, the entire team will be entangled.

The apocalypse is ruthless and cruel; only the strong can survive.

If it weren’t for her luck in meeting Miss, she would probably have died in Yulan Garden long ago.

Xiao Chuxia couldn’t help but turn and hug Jiang Fei beside her, her emotions genuine: “Thank you, Miss.”

“I’m so glad I called out to you back in Yulan Garden.”

She didn’t dislike her for being weak and never abandoned her!

Jiang Fei raised her hand and stroked Xiao Chuxia’s growing short hair.

“Go wash some fruit and eat it.”

Eat more, talk less!

Jiang Wuqing thought.

As Xu Qianyao said, the number of hungry people blocking the road increased. They were all desperate for food, willing to risk their lives, and the team would occasionally stop and shoot to kill.

Fortunately, they brought enough weapons and bullets, otherwise they would have been trapped by the hungry people as soon as they left Su Province.

After a day, Jiang Fei had somewhat gotten used to the stop-and-go travel.

When she noticed the car stop again, Jiang Fei initially thought the front would quickly deal with the hungry people.

Unexpectedly, gunshots rang out one after another.

Jiang Fei took out a submachine gun from the cabinet and got out of the car to check the situation.

Lu Yu and Xiao Chuxia remained inside the car, to prevent anyone from circling around to attack from the rear.

More than half of the Comrades from the trucks had disembarked, firing their guns at the four off-road vehicles blocking the road.

“Stop fighting! We won’t fight anymore! We surrender!”

Clatter —

Several pistols were thrown out from behind the off-road vehicles.

Xu Qianyao raised his hand, signaling the Comrades to stop shooting, but he did not relax his vigilance. He walked over with a machine gun, forcing out the three men hiding behind the off-road vehicles.

Their companions had already been shot dead in the crossfire.

These three men were wearing camouflage jumpsuits, with rosy complexions. They clearly weren’t hungry people, nor were they ordinary survivors.

Xu Qianyao and the Comrades pointed their guns at them.

“Who are you?”

Fearing being shot in the head, the three men, out of cowardice, revealed everything.

After the apocalypse, many private bases emerged in various places, surviving by looting, plundering, and scavenging.

They belonged to the Wild Wolf Base, and they had always been at odds with the Fierce Tiger Base.

Hearing that someone would be delivering supplies to the Fierce Tiger Base at eight tonight, they came to ambush along the inevitable route, intending to rob, but ended up targeting the wrong convoy.

The Wild Wolf people had previously wondered why the supply delivery people came so early, since it was only a little past six.

But upon seeing more than a dozen trucks, all their rationality vanished.

They thought the trucks were full of supplies and were excited for a big score, never expecting them to be Comrades with guns.

Jiang Fei, who had arrived, heard everything and asked the three men: “How many supplies do you and the Fierce Tiger Base have?”

“Our base has enough supplies for three to four hundred people. We’re not sure about Fierce Tiger, but they definitely have more than us.”

“Their base is large, with over five hundred people, and they often snatch the prey we’ve set our sights on. Even their gatekeepers are fatter than me.”

Jiang Fei also asked about the quantity of weapons and medicine, and about the conflicts between the two bases.

Almost everyone had a gun.

The amount of medicine was unknown, but it was certainly dozens of boxes.

Wild Wolf and Fierce Tiger were not far apart, separated only by a village, which meant they often targeted the same 'fat sheep' and frequently fought over supplies.

However, their strengths were similar, so neither could gain a decisive victory, leading to a stalemate.

Xu Qianyao gradually guessed what Jiang Fei intended to do.

This girl, she wants to be a bandit!

Sure enough, after understanding the situation, Jiang Fei told the Comrades not to kill the three men, and then took Xu Qianyao to find Director Ning.

Such a good opportunity for a zero-dollar purchase couldn’t be missed!
