164: Jiang Fei's heart skipped a beat/departed for Huaiyuan Village

Chen Fengping’s previously clean clothes were once again tattered and he was drenched by the rain like a drowned rat.

He pouted, looking as if he was about to cry.

“Fei Fei, that bastard Zhu Wende, it’s bad enough he made us eat human flesh, but now he’s dead too.”

“No one is taking care of your sister, and I can’t support a pregnant woman and your brother by myself…”

Jiang Fei impatiently interrupted, “If you can’t cry, then don’t.”

It was an eyesore.

Chen Fengping choked, a surge of anger rising in his heart.

But thinking of his hungry stomach, he suppressed his dissatisfaction.

No matter what, he had to get food today!

“Good daughter, you must be very tired carrying such heavy things, I’ll help you move them.” Chen Fengping said hypocritically, greedily reaching out to grab the instant noodles.

Jiang Fei quickly dodged, handed the box of instant noodles to Su Liuyuan, then directly knocked out Chen Fengping and dragged him into a nearby corner.

She neatly and decisively used a knife to sever Chen Fengping’s hand and foot tendons, and cut off his tongue.

She didn’t believe that scumbag father could still prance around in front of her!

Having dealt with Chen Fengping, Jiang Fei’s mood improved, and she continued to move goods for the Ping An Supermarket.

Yao Damang stood at the door, looking at the cigars in a box on the ground.

“Boss Jiang, where did you buy your cigars?”

“It’s the same brand I used to smoke, and it’s also 10 sticks per box.”

Jiang Fei calmly made up a lie, “I’m not sure, it’s my boss’s goods.”

“If you like them, I can give you two boxes to smoke.”

They were yours to begin with.

“Oh, that’s too kind. I’ll bring the money for the cigars when I deliver the gold in the middle of the month.”

Yao Damang happily took two boxes of cigars, and Jiang Fei silently worked without declining.

The temptation of gold was too great; she couldn’t resist it.

After moving the goods for the two stores, Jiang Fei called Jiang Zhengkang and others, telling them about her upcoming long trip.

“If you have anything, find Su Liuyuan.”

“If he can’t handle it, go to the police station and mention my name, then ask Director Ning for help.”

Jiang Fei gave the spare key to 302 to Su Liuyuan: “I’m entrusting you with Big Yellow and the others for now. I’ll prepare their rations before I leave.”

“No problem, Captain. I guarantee they’ll still be plump and healthy when you return.”

Trusting Su Liuyuan, Jiang Fei drove the large truck back to Mingshang.

She returned the car keys to Xu Qianyao, then went upstairs to prepare the rations for the little ones.

She took out a large empty barrel from the Supermarket warehouse and filled it with millet for the chicks and goslings.

She also took out various types of fish paste and filled the refrigerator.

Jiang Fei picked up Big Yellow from the sofa.

Ever since the small doorway was opened in the living room of 302, Big Yellow had been staying with her every day and hadn't gone home.

“I’m going out tomorrow. You stay home and protect Big Boss and the others.”

“If you behave well, I’ll bring you a present when I come back.”

Big Yellow meowed in response.

Two-legged beast, don’t worry!

I will absolutely not eat chicken or goose meat!

After petting Big Yellow for a while, Jiang Fei took out a travel backpack and packed some instant food.

Her weapons and supplies were all in the Supermarket, ready to be used at any time, so a bag for appearances was enough.

Ling Zhaorui was at the Planting Base, too far to be reached by walkie-talkie, so Jiang Fei only told Xiao Chuxia that she was going out.

To avoid worrying Xiao Hua Lao, Jiang Fei didn't mention the mission.

The next day, at 5:45 AM, the departure time was approaching.

Jiang Fei put on her backpack and raincoat and left.

Lu Yu, similarly dressed, came out of 301.

The two went downstairs with flashlights, meeting up with Xu Qianyao.

Yin Jing drove an SUV and stopped at the community gate.

The car had three rows of seats; the first two rows had two separate seats, and the last row was a three-seater, allowing for 7 people including the driver.

Sitting in the last row were the Third Brother, Huang Wenzhou, whom Jiang Fei had met before, and a female member of the Rescue Team, Cao Xingying.

Jiang Fei and Lu Yu sat in the second row.

Xu Qianyao sat in the co-pilot’s seat: “Our mission this time is to be carried out with the military and the Patrol Team.”

“But it’s completely confidential from the Patrol Team.”

“The higher-ups suspect the mole is in the Patrol Team’s leadership, and they’ve mobilized personnel under the guise of assisting the Rescue Team with house repairs.”

“Lu Yu, Huang Wenzhou, don’t say the wrong thing when you get back.”

Lu Yu and Huang Wenzhou nodded in agreement.

Xu Qianyao had Yin Jing start the car and head to meet the main group at the Safety Shelter entrance and exit.

The air conditioning was on in the car, so it wasn’t muggy. Jiang Fei was about to close her eyes to catch up on sleep when her shoulder was gently poked.

Cao Xingying from the back row handed over a pack of compressed biscuits and a bag of milk.

“My mom says skipping breakfast can lead to gallstones. Eat this before you sleep.”

Cao Xingying couldn't contain her excitement: “The story of you chasing the One-Eyed Dragon in your car that night has spread throughout our Rescue Team. Crashing a pickup truck into a big truck was so cool.”

As if seeing a fourth chatterbox, Jiang Fei quickly ended the conversation: “I’ve already had breakfast. I need to rest now.”

Hearing this, Cao Xingying obediently shut her mouth. Just as she was about to put the biscuits and milk back into her bag, a hand reached out from beside her.

Huang Wenzhou said with a playful grin, “I haven’t had breakfast. Give them to me.”

Cao Xingying generously agreed.

Huang Wenzhou took the food and ate it heartily, secretly laughing at Cao Xingying’s foolishness.

He got a free breakfast, which meant he could save his own supplies!

By the time Jiang Fei woke up, it was already past nine in the morning.

She found a thin men’s jacket draped over her and recognized it as Lu Yu’s. She looked beside her.

Lu Yu, wearing a short-sleeved shirt, was sleeping with his eyes closed, leaning against the seat back.

Was her teammate afraid she would be cold from the air conditioning?

Jiang Fei carefully draped the jacket back over Lu Yu’s body, but her wrist was suddenly grabbed.

Lu Yu opened his eyes, and seeing it was Jiang Fei, his tense nerves instantly relaxed: “Sorry, it was a reflex.”

“It’s fine, go back to sleep.” Jiang Fei sat back in her seat.

She looked out the car window.

The light rain continued, and the road was muddy.

Occasionally, she could see desiccated corpses submerged in the rainwater.

These were survivors who had died during the extreme heat.

With no one to care for them and nowhere to go, they were left to rot in the wilderness.

Behind the SUV, several military trucks followed.

On board were Comrades from the military, the Rescue Team, and the Patrol Team, as well as supplies that would be needed on the road.

Just then, the SUV stopped. Xu Qianyao switched places with Yin Jing and asked, “Does anyone need to use the restroom?”

Cao Xingying and Huang Wenzhou immediately raised their hands.

They had been eating and drinking non-stop since they got in the car.

Xu Qianyao: “Hurry up and come back.”

Lu Yu put on his jacket, took two clean apples from his bag, and handed one to Jiang Fei.

“Eat some fruit.”

Jiang Fei didn't refuse. As soon as she took a bite of the apple, a pear appeared in her hand.

Before she could react, a bag of raisins was tucked into her arms.

Lu Yu, like a hamster that loved to hoard food, kept pulling out more, and soon Jiang Fei’s arms were full.

“How much food did you take exactly?”

“Not much.” Lu Yu opened his backpack to show Jiang Fei.

Inside were a few remaining packs of compressed biscuits, a gun, two boxes of bullets, a walkie-talkie, three bottles of water, a small medical kit, a change of short-sleeved shirt, a pack of sanitary pads, and a bag of warming patches.

“…Why did you bring sanitary pads?”

Lu Yu truthfully said, “I brought them for you, just in case.”

“We don’t know how long we’ll be out this time, and you might not be able to bring everything, so I went to the store yesterday to get a pack. I have less luggage, so I have space for these necessities.”

Her teammate always seemed to take such careful consideration of her.

Jiang Fei couldn’t help but look up at Lu Yu, only to meet the man’s deep eyes.

They were like a deep pool, drawing one into their depths.

Suddenly, her heart skipped a beat, and Jiang Fei, uncharacteristically flustered, sat up straight and ate her apple.

Yin Jing, who had witnessed everything, quietly nudged Xu Qianyao in the driver’s seat, signaling him with her eyes to look behind.

She spotted pink bubbles!

Xu Qianyao didn't understand Yin Jing’s meaning: “What’s wrong with your eyes? Are you not feeling well?”

Yin Jing: “…”

You deserve to be a bachelor in your thirties!

Soon after, Cao Xingying returned to the car and went to retrieve her backpack from the seat.

Huang Wenzhou followed her, not understanding her actions: “Food is so precious now, why would you share it with others?”

Cao Xingying: “My mom says people should help each other. That old grandma just now was so pitiful, she had nothing to eat and was still chewing on tree bark because she couldn’t bite through it.”

Yin Jing frowned and asked, “What old person?”

“I went to use the restroom over there and saw many tents made of wooden planks. They were all survivors who couldn’t get into the Safety Shelter or resettlement areas. I chatted with an old grandma for a bit and decided to give her a bag of bread.”

Cao Xingying pointed into the distance, intending to tell Yin Jing where the wooden plank tents were, but then suddenly fell silent.

Countless refugees were walking through the rain, some holding wooden sticks, others rusty knives.

Their cloudy, gleaming eyes, like those of beasts, had spotted their prey.
