17: Chapter 17 The Unknown Fear
This Plain might very well be alive!
This was the conclusion Lin Sheng had guessed from a casual glance just now.
Although this idea was somewhat absurd—after all, what kind of creature could grow to such a size?
But after Lin Sheng gained some altitude and observed for a while longer, he found that there was a high possibility his guess was true.
Because looking down from high above, Lin Sheng could see that this Plain would heave every now and then.
The magnitude of this heaving was extremely subtle, so subtle that even the creatures living on the Plain couldn't detect it.
If not for Lin Sheng's keen observation and the fact that he was in the air, he certainly wouldn't have noticed this situation.
As for whether this Plain was actually alive, Lin Sheng wasn't entirely sure about that point.
But every time the Plain heaved, it gave Lin Sheng the feeling that it was "breathing."
This made Lin Sheng feel extremely wary deep down.
He circled over the outskirts of the Plain for a long time, planning to land on the periphery first to check the situation.
Compared to the central area, the outskirts were bound to be much safer.
Even if this Plain suddenly came to life, the disaster would inevitably start from the center and spread outward.
And so, Lin Sheng landed on the outskirts of the Plain.
The vegetation on this Plain was actually dominated by trees; logically, it should have been a rainforest.
However, the malnutrition of those trees was truly severe, to the point where a rainforest had turned directly into a Plain.
When Lin Sheng's massive body stood on the Plain, those trees looked like weeds.
After wandering around for a few laps, Lin Sheng didn't rashly provoke the creatures on the Plain.
Although the creatures on the outskirts were similar in size to Lin Sheng, and he was confident he could soundly defeat them,
at the thought of this Plain's uniqueness, Lin Sheng decided to observe for a while before making a decision.
Just like that, Lin Sheng lived on the outskirts of this Plain for a few days.
These few days passed quite leisurely.
The body sizes of the creatures on the outskirts were generally not much different from Lin Sheng's; as long as he didn't actively look for trouble, those creatures almost never came to provoke him.
Occasionally, if there truly were some blind fools, Lin Sheng could only convert them into evolution points.
During the day, Lin Sheng would go hunting in the nearby rainforest and eat a few large trees on the side to supplement some vitamins.
At night, he would use Soul Out of Body to observe the situation of the creatures on the outskirts of the Plain.
Lin Sheng originally wanted to use Soul Out of Body to check the situation beneath the Plain's surface.
But he discovered that his consciousness seemed unable to enter the interior of high-density solid objects.
His consciousness could not enter things like those biological bodies or the ground.
This greatly restricted the movement of Lin Sheng's consciousness.
Not only that, because he couldn't sense his body once his consciousness was far away, Lin Sheng's consciousness couldn't go far each time.
Because he had to constantly watch over his body to prevent it from being carried off by some blind beast.
Although his consciousness hadn't left his body too far, after these few days of observation, Lin Sheng still noticed some unusual things about this Plain.
One night, Lin Sheng noticed a faint flickering of fluorescent light in the center of the Plain.
This light wasn't very bright, but light coming from the land in the darkness of the prehistoric era was still easy to spot.
It was that very night that Lin Sheng discovered all the surrounding creatures besides himself had become somewhat restless.
Some of the larger ones even ran directly toward the center of the Plain.
Faced with this situation, based on Lin Sheng's years of experience reading novels, a somewhat absurd thought popped into his head: a Rare Treasure might be appearing in the central area.
Once this thought emerged, Lin Sheng's heart felt a bit itchy.
He also really wanted to go to the center to see if a Rare Treasure was indeed appearing.
But this thought only lasted for a moment; before the situation was clear, Lin Sheng wouldn't do anything that might be disadvantageous to himself.
After all, if some Rare Treasure really was appearing there, it certainly wouldn't fall into his hands.
With his current size, he couldn't even dominate the outskirts, let alone the central area.
Although Lin Sheng didn't plan to go to the central area now, it didn't mean he wouldn't go in the future.
Based on his observations over the past few days and the conditions of the Plain, Lin Sheng felt that even if this Plain really was alive, it couldn't be such a coincidence that it would wake up while he was here.
The reason was simple: the trees he was standing on looked like they had been growing here for many years.
Lin Sheng didn't believe his luck would be so bad that the Plain would wake up just as he arrived.
As long as this Plain didn't wake up and he developed steadily for a while longer, he would one day have the ability to establish a foothold in the central area.
Thinking of this, Lin Sheng already had a goal for the coming period.
"Roar!"
Just then, a roar broke Lin Sheng's train of thought.
He turned his head and saw a creature that looked very much like a Tyrannosaurus Rex, but with a body covered in downy tentacles, roaring at him.
Among those tentacles, the eight on its back were the longest; Lin Sheng estimated they had grown to over twenty meters.
Lin Sheng could tell from the Tentacled Tyrannosaurus's gaze that it had clearly taken him for food.
In response, Lin Sheng silently rose and flapped his wings toward the sky.
It wasn't that he was afraid of that Tentacled Tyrannosaurus, but that this Tentacled Tyrannosaurus was nearly forty meters long; Lin Sheng felt that fighting it had too low a cost-performance ratio.
Mainly, he couldn't guarantee he could win.
However, after Lin Sheng rose and flew away, a scene that left him dumbfounded appeared.
He saw the Tentacled Tyrannosaurus's downy tentacles vibrating at an extremely high speed; if Lin Sheng hadn't seen the afterimages of the largest tentacles, he wouldn't even have known they were swaying.
Under the swaying of the tentacles, the Tentacled Tyrannosaurus's body seemed to have a Levitation spell cast upon it, slowly floating toward Lin Sheng in mid-air.
This strange scene not only didn't frighten Lin Sheng but instead slightly eased his nervous mood.
The main reason was that this Tentacled Tyrannosaurus's current performance was simply too hilarious.
This floating-like state, when applied to such a massive creature, was truly enough to make one chuckle.
Lin Sheng flew back another distance before the Tentacled Tyrannosaurus could get close to him.
Seeing this, the Tentacled Tyrannosaurus showed no intention of stopping and continued floating toward Lin Sheng's position.
"Ptooie!"
From a distance, Lin Sheng spat strong acid at the Tentacled Tyrannosaurus; the acid landed precisely on its body, causing a patch of tentacles behind its neck to go bald.
