126: Chapter 126 Shen Weiyue: A Diligent and Ambitious Student
The next day.
Computer Science Class 1 officially began its university coursework.
Since the new class committee, led by Monitor Hui, had already distributed the new textbooks to all the students, everyone just needed to go and collect them, making the textbook distribution process highly efficient.
This was handled beautifully, and the students praised it unanimously.
"Monitor Hui, well done. We picked the right monitor!" Shen Weiyue had already changed how he addressed him.
"Obviously. I was the high school student council president, after all." Qi Hui felt proud, grinning broadly.
"Is that so? That's awesome. Keep it up!" Daddy Shen gave his approving encouragement and walked into the classroom with a swagger.
Same old routine: sitting in the front row.
When excellence becomes a habit, you can never go back to being ordinary again.
The day's classes were packed, passing quickly and fulfilling, and everyone got to know the teachers for each subject in their freshman year.
Like most schools, the freshman curriculum mainly consisted of general education courses and mathematics/science courses, with only a few foundational major-specific courses.
General education courses like Ideological and Political Education were large lectures, usually taken by several majors together in large tiered classrooms, while major-specific courses were taken separately by their own class.
Qi Hui and his two friends particularly enjoyed general education courses because they had the opportunity to meet beauties from other classes, but Shen Weiyue prioritized major-specific courses.
It wasn't that he wanted to achieve anything in his major starting in freshman year; it was mainly because what he planned to do next was related to his major.
Internet startups—what do freshmen know? Forget about developing software; after studying for a year or so, it would be good enough if they could just get their code to run.
Even by junior or senior year, they might not necessarily be very proficient or impressive.
The real resources were those senior students who had already graduated and were working, or those pursuing master's and doctoral degrees under the professors.
Those were the top-tier workhorses... ahem, talent!
...
More than a week later.
A-Bin and his two friends gradually began to sense something.
They all noticed that Shen Weiyue was exceptionally studious and motivated whenever they had major-specific courses.
He sat upright like a primary school student when the teacher was lecturing.
He was always the most enthusiastic one to raise his hand when the teacher asked questions.
Even after class, he would intercept the teacher to ask all sorts of questions, often following them all the way to the teacher's office.
This was fucking incomprehensible.
Could he be planning to take the postgraduate entrance exam?
However, Shen Weiyue didn't actually chase every major-specific teacher with questions; he seemed particularly fond of Professor Li, who taught programming.
"Old Yue, what the hell is going on with you? You're so serious and studious—are you planning to take the postgraduate exam or win a scholarship at the end of the year?"
That afternoon, when Shen Weiyue was about to go and have a friendly chat with Professor Li after class, Xie Dongming couldn't help but stop him to ask.
"We agreed that we'd all slack off and let the scholarship go to Qi Hui. You aren't secretly working hard to stab us in the back, are you?"
"Bullshit, am I that kind of person?" Shen Weiyue rebuked Fatty Xie, "I have my own plans; stop staring at me all the time."
"No, I'm worried. A-Bin and I go to the internet cafe when we're free. You idiot, you have a computer but don't play games, and when you're free, you're in the dorm self-studying, reading books, and coding. What exactly are you trying to do?"
"That's right, Shen Weiyue, you can't be self-improving behind my and Fatty Xie's backs!" A-Bin also couldn't help but chime in.
"Are you trying to teach me how to do things?" Shen Weiyue raised an eyebrow.
"We wouldn't dare. It's just that you and A Hui are both motivated, making the two of us look like slackers..."
"Stop asking. I promise it's not to get good grades on the final exam. If you want to study, join me; if not, just study according to your own plans. I'm too busy right now; I don't have time to chit-chat with you."
Shen Weiyue scolded them sternly and then headed towards the teacher's office without looking back.
Xie Dongming and Zhang Chengbin looked at each other.
The two turned back to look at Qi Hui, who was carrying his backpack, and asked, "A Hui, classes are over. What are you planning to do?"
"I'm going to the library. Want to come?" Qi Hui replied.
Since classes officially started, he had felt overwhelming pressure from Shen Weiyue. His family background was already inferior, and if his grades were also poor, he would really be too embarrassed to call him 'Daddy'.
That's how it is when you're roommates with someone excellent and self-disciplined; there's an invisible sense of motivation.
That's the meaning of the saying, 'Living with a good person is like entering a room filled with orchids; after a while, you don't smell the fragrance, but you have become one with it.'
Xie Dongming heard his answer and shook his head without thinking, "Not going. A-Bin and I are going to play ranked games. Do you want to join us?"
"No thanks, I don't have the right to play games!" Qi Hui smiled and went downstairs on his own.
Zhang Chengbin was stunned and felt a bit uneasy after hearing this: "Fatty Xie, I think something's wrong. They've been so motivated since the semester started; will we be holding them back?"
"Holding them back? We listen attentively in class too, don't we? What's wrong with playing games in our free time?" Xie Dongming replied.
"No, what if they both get high scores and we're at the bottom? Wouldn't that be humiliating?"
"Hiss... I guess you're right."
Xie Dongming hesitated for a moment, his eyes narrowing: "Let's go. We're going to the library too; we can't let them surpass us."
The two changed their plans and chased after Qi Hui towards the library.
Shen Weiyue didn't know that he had invisibly influenced the three roommates, but he swore he really wasn't secretly trying hard.
His goal wasn't about credits or GPA rankings; his goal was the resources from Professor Li's vast network of students.
At that moment, he was standing in Professor Li's office again, with a respectful and eager-to-learn posture, asking all sorts of questions.
"Professor Li, if I want to develop a piece of software, about how long would it take to master it?"
Professor Li's full name was Professor Li Hanzhang, a well-known big shot in the School of Computer Science at Jiang University.
The Computer Science and Technology major at Jiang University was ranked in the top two nationwide, so one could imagine how impressive he was.
Hearing Shen Weiyue's question, he smiled and replied, "Student Shen, you have to eat one bite at a time. Learn to crawl before you learn to walk."
"Based on my teaching experience, students at our Jiang University are smart. If you self-study diligently, you can dabble in it in about half a year. If you want to handle the difficulty of enterprise work, you'd need to study with dedication for at least a year or two."
"If you want to go to an excellent large enterprise after graduation, you must study diligently until you graduate. As for becoming an industry expert, that requires even longer research..."
"Student Shen, programming isn't actually difficult. What's difficult is knowing the 'what' and the 'why'."
"Regarding the software development you mentioned, I don't know what your standards are, nor do I know where the application level lies, so I can't answer you."
Shen Weiyue scratched his head and added, "I mean, to the extent of nationwide promotion, to the extent that it can be used for startups and making money, like when QQ was first launched..."
"Oh?" Professor Li pushed up his glasses, his eyes burning as if seeing through everything, "So you want to develop commercial software for a startup."
"You just started your freshman year, and you're already thinking about starting a business?"
