63: Chapter 63 Sisters Who Go Out to Work
Evening.
Shen Weiyue arrived at the passenger station carrying his backpack, the smell of alcohol on him still not fully dissipated.
He boarded the bus, found a window seat, and sat down. Then, putting on his headphones to listen to music, he drifted off into a hazy sleep, not even realizing when the bus started moving.
From Lingshan County to Shenzhen, the road journey passes through Chongqing, Guizhou, and Guangxi, taking at least thirty-plus hours.
Anyone who has taken a long-distance bus knows that holding one position for a long time, unable to stretch your legs or move around, makes you feel incredibly uncomfortable.
Shen Weiyue didn't want to take the bus either, but he had no choice; it was the only way to travel from Lingshan County.
So, when he woke up feeling uncomfortable, he realized it was already dark outside.
"Handsome, I've seen you wearing headphones listening to music the whole way. Aren't you worried your phone will run out of battery? It's over thirty hours, you know?"
A voice sounded in his ear. Shen Weiyue turned his head to look and realized that at some point, a girl had sat down next to him. Her features were hard to make out clearly, but she didn't seem bad-looking.
He checked his phone and saw it still had 70% battery, so he shook his head and said, "It does drain the battery, but I have spare ones."
At that time, domestic mobile phone batteries were removable. Shen Weiyue had gotten two spares and kept them in his bag, so he wasn't afraid of running out of power at all.
Outside the window, it was pitch black. Every now and then, he could see faint yellow lights in the distance, sparse and scattered, clearly indicating they were far away from any town.
Shen Weiyue checked the time; it was past one in the morning.
Drivers in the early 2000s were truly something else; they didn't bother following the Ministry of Transport's regulations for night driving at all, with their feet practically welded to the gas pedal.
If the people on this bus died, it was just bad luck; if they survived, it was all profit.
Everyone on the bus was sleeping. The girl beside him, for some reason, wasn't sleeping and instead continued to strike up a conversation: "Are you going to Shenzhen to work?"
"Work?" Shen Weiyue was stunned for a moment.
"Yeah, my sister and I are going there to work too."
The girl pointed to the girl sleeping in the seat in front and to the left, then continued to ask: "Which factory are you planning to go to? Maybe we can look out for each other?"
Shen Weiyue shook his head: "I'm not working. I'm just traveling around."
"Oh, sorry about that. I thought you were going to work in a factory too." The girl smiled awkwardly.
Shen Weiyue had no interest in chatting. He checked his phone and saw several unread messages: one from Ning Xi, one from Ye Lingtao, and one from Zhao Qingyan.
Among them, the message from Zhao the Fox was as concise as ever, just four words: "Safe travels."
Shen Weiyue thought of the few bottles of mineral water in his backpack and couldn't help but laugh bitterly.
That silly fox had stuffed so much water in there without thinking; she had no idea that when taking a long-distance bus, you should drink less water, or else you wouldn't find a place to go to the Restroom when you got desperate on the road.
On his list, Liang Yuting's avatar was still gray. Her status hadn't been updated for months.
Shen Weiyue sighed.
The girl beside him heard the sound and asked curiously: "Handsome, why are you sighing?"
"It's nothing. Aren't you going to sleep?" Shen Weiyue turned off his phone screen and shoved it into his pocket.
"I can't sleep. This is the first time my sister and I have traveled so far; I'm a bit excited and a bit scared. We arrived late and couldn't sit together, so I have to keep an eye on her. I'll sleep after she wakes up."
"Oh, from your voice, you sound like you're under twenty. Is there anyone meeting you in Shenzhen?"
"We have a fellow villager who introduced us to a job. My sister and I are eighteen this year."
"Why aren't you in school?"
"I couldn't keep up. My grades weren't good. My sister's grades were okay, but our family didn't have the money to support us, so we had to come out to work."
Hearing him ask that, the girl asked back: "Are you still in school?"
"Yes, I'm about to start university."
"Wow, a university student! That's amazing. I really admire people like you who are good at studying."
The girl exclaimed in admiration. After chatting for a while and feeling more familiar, she stood up to get her backpack and asked: "I brought some melon seeds. Do you want some?"
Shen Weiyue looked up. By the light shining from the opposite lane, he could see the impressive scale of her chest.
Moreover, even though this woman was dressed plainly and in a dowdy fashion, her curves were revealed as she stood on tiptoe to reach for her bag. Her butt was perky and round; her figure was genuinely good.
"No thanks. Eating too many melon seeds makes me thirsty, and I don't want to drink water and have to go to the Restroom."
"The driver said we'll reach a service area in an hour or two. Don't worry, just take a handful."
Shen Weiyue still shook his head.
The girl started peeling them quietly with her fingernails, continuing to chat with him while she did so.
And so, Shen Weiyue learned the sisters' names.
The older sister beside him was named Feng Jiayue, and the younger sister next to her was Feng Jiaxin; they were twins.
He didn't find Feng Jiayue annoying. Hearing a hometown accent while away from home was a comfort; at least it allowed him to forget his worries.
Sure enough, two hours later, the bus pulled into a service area. The driver shouted for anyone who needed to use the Restroom to hurry up, as they would continue after fifteen minutes.
Feng Jiayue went to wake her sister to go to the Restroom, but the younger sister mumbled that she wanted to sleep more and closed her eyes again.
"Handsome Shen, do you need to go to the Restroom?"
The service area was eerie. Shen Weiyue could see that Feng Jiayue was timid, so he nodded and replied: "That's fine. Who knows how far the next service area is? I'll go too."
The two of them got off the bus together.
Feng Jiayue walked in front. Only then did Shen Weiyue notice that the girl had great proportions—a slim waist, long legs, and a standard hourglass figure. If she went into a factory, she would definitely be factory-belle material.
He finished using the Restroom, but Feng Jiayue hadn't come out yet, so he stood outside to wait. At one point, he habitually reached into his pocket and suddenly felt an urge to smoke.
"Can habits be reborn too?"
Shen Weiyue smiled self-deprecatingly. For some reason, the desire in his heart grew stronger. So, when Feng Jiayue came out, she saw him holding the air between two fingers and making a gesture near his mouth.
"Do you want to smoke?"
"I do."
"I have some, do you want some?"
"You have cigarettes?"
Shen Weiyue was extremely surprised. Feng Jiayue said embarrassedly: "My family gave me a pack when I left, saying I should pass them out to fellow villagers when I get to Shenzhen to thank them..."
"Oh, I haven't smoked in many years, but I really want to try."
"Then I'll go get them from the bus."
The two arrived at the bus. Feng Jiayue got on and brought down a pack of Yuxi cigarettes. Shen Weiyue took one and then told her to give one to the driver as well.
The driver simply jumped off the bus. Shen Weiyue borrowed a light, and they squatted down to smoke together.
In the time it took to smoke one cigarette, the two started talking and chatted for a short while.
"Young man, is that your girlfriend? She's really something. You better watch her closely when you get to Shenzhen; the bosses there love to keep these busty, curvy country girls as mistresses."
Shen Weiyue shook his head and exhaled a ring of smoke: "No, we just met."
"A stranger is this close to you already? You're awesome." The driver gave a thumbs up, then winked, "Put in some effort, win her over. She's top-tier."
"That's not the case. We're not the same kind of people." Shen Weiyue crushed the cigarette butt: "When will we arrive in Shenzhen?"
"Around six in the morning the day after tomorrow. We're just about to leave Chongqing now."
While the two were talking, they suddenly heard a scream from inside the bus, followed by shouting and scolding.
The driver and Shen Weiyue quickly got back on the bus. Feng Jiayue was arguing with a man, and Feng Jiaxin was crying, feeling wronged.
"What's going on?"
"That man touched my sister's chest."
Feng Jiayue glared furiously at the middle-aged man sitting next to her sister, her eyes spitting fire.
"Don't spout nonsense. I was going to the Restroom and accidentally brushed against her arm. Your sister was blocking the way; I didn't do it on purpose."
The man glared at her viciously and threatened: "If you keep talking nonsense, I'll kill you!"
Feng Jiaxin was trembling with fear.
Shen Weiyue looked at him calmly: "Talk properly. If it's a misunderstanding, just clarify it. Don't threaten people!"
The driver also hurried over to diffuse the situation. The man snorted and got off the bus to go pee.
