23: Chapter 23 I Feel Like You're Stalking Me
Mock Exam 2 finished on a Saturday afternoon.
All senior high school students were immediately released for the break. Shen Weiyue was itching to go to an internet café, but remembering Old Demon Han's warning and his own vow, he forcefully strangled the thought in the cradle.
In the evening, he played basketball for a while, then went back to his rental apartment, took a shower, and slept blissfully until the next morning.
On his days off, he didn't play games or read novels. He had originally planned to play pool with a few jerks, but they canceled at the last minute because they went to the internet café to play Jade Dynasty.
In the words of Ye Lingtao: "Balance work and rest. If you won't play games with us, then go jerk off at the kids' table."
Shen Weiyue couldn't really say anything, so he decided to go to the Xinhua Bookstore to kill time by reading.
As usual, he carried two rice cakes while walking through the pedestrian street, and as usual, he ran straight into Zhao Qingyan at a women's clothing store.
"I'm just passing by, bye."
Shen Weiyue didn't say another word and took off running.
"Stop right there!" Zhao Qingyan shouted. "Shen Weiyue, are you following me?"
"Did your doctor approve your discharge? Your symptoms of mental issues still look pretty obvious."
Shen Weiyue kept his eyes straight ahead, not daring to look at her too much, because he was afraid that if he did, he wouldn't be able to look away.
This Fox was here to buy clothes again, and she was even trying on a short skirt.
With those cold, porcelain-white legs, who the hell could handle that?
Zhao Qingyan questioned suspiciously: "You're the one who's mentally ill. How could it be such a coincidence? I just started trying on clothes and you appeared outside the door again. Do you have feelings for me?"
"A little bit."
"What do you mean?"
"Nothing at all."
Shen Weiyue waved his hand and left on his own, leaving Zhao Qingyan gnashing her teeth in anger.
This Donkey is becoming more and more arrogant, and his attitude is insufferable. He must be made to stand during evening self-study!
Shen Weiyue arrived at the bookstore, picked out a copy of "Records of the Three Kingdoms," and sat on the floor in a corner to read it.
Director Shen loved reading history, especially the history of the Three Kingdoms period.
No hot-blooded young man could resist the temptation of heroes in chaotic times; those brilliant schemes and strategies left him intoxicated.
After reading for a while, a familiar voice said in surprise: "Shen Weiyue, you're here too?"
Shen Weiyue looked up and saw that it was actually Ning Xi.
The little beauty was holding a copy of "Cry Me a Sad River" in her arms, looking at him with pleasant surprise.
"I had nothing to do, so I came to read for a while to kill time." Shen Weiyue pointed at her arms. "You like this type?"
"Uh, I'm just reading it casually, just casually."
Ning Xi smiled slightly shyly, looked around, and said: "I'll go look for a seat."
A moment later, she came back and said awkwardly: "It's so crowded, there are no seats left. Can I sit next to you?"
"Sit wherever you like, as long as you don't mind the floor being dirty." Shen Weiyue fanned the area to his right with his book, helping her clear away the dust.
Ning Xi's eyes flashed with indescribable emotion. She happily sat down beside him, then leaned in slightly: "What book are you reading?"
"Records of the Three Kingdoms. It's not the type of book girls usually like." Most girls in middle school wore ponytails, and Shen Weiyue caught a scent of Rejoice shampoo.
"Wow, it's the version with all Classical Chinese. You're reading the original version without any translation? Can you actually read this?"
"I can. The original flavor is more interesting."
"That's amazing. No wonder your Chinese grades are so good."
"You're not bad either."
The two exchanged a few polite compliments, then went back to their own reading.
Shen Weiyue read carefully, because the expressions in Classical Chinese required careful contemplation.
Ning Xi, however, didn't know what parts she was reading, but she would steal glances at him from time to time, likely comparing him to the story in her novel.
Shen Weiyue hadn't read this book by Guo, but he had heard of it. In this era and among girls of this age, it was extremely popular and a bestseller.
The most famous thing about it was the "forty-five-degree angle looking up at the sky." This little beauty couldn't be practicing that angle, could she?
"Why are you looking at me? Just read your book."
"The story in the book is too sad, I need to take a break for a while."
Ning Xi's explanation sounded far-fetched, but Shen Weiyue just smiled, couldn't be bothered to say more, and went back to his own book.
The two stayed in the bookstore at that rhythm until the arrival of the number one lady on the leaderboard.
Zhao Qingyan had originally planned to go home after buying her clothes, but for some reason, she was inexplicably drawn to stop by the bookstore, only to see this harmonious scene the moment she walked in.
That Stinky Donkey, Shen Weiyue, was sitting on the floor with his back against the bookshelf, left leg stretched out, right foot planted on the ground with his knee raised to support a yellow-covered book, looking somewhat dashing and unrestrained like a scholar.
Ning Xi was sitting obediently on his right side, her posture very ladylike. Although she was also leaning against the bookshelf, from a distance, the angle was actually tilted somewhat toward Shen Weiyue.
Shen the Donkey was reading, and Ning Xi was stealing glances at him. Were these two on a date here?
Zhao Qingyan felt inexplicably very annoyed, and subconsciously walked over.
"Shen Weiyue, what are you two doing here?"
"Class monitor? I'm reading." Shen Weiyue looked up at the sound and raised the book in his hand. "Why are you here?"
"Did I come at a bad time?"
"You came at the perfect time. Let me tell you, there's a new set of secret math test papers over there. They're especially difficult, I can't even understand them. Do you want to go critique them?"
Shen Weiyue pointed excitedly at the supplementary study materials section, but Zhao Qingyan just kept a cold face, unmoved, and instead looked at Ning Xi.
Swept by her gaze, Ning Xi felt a sense of guilt, as if she had done something shameful, and stood up in a panic.
"Qingyan..."
"You two?"
"No, I came to the bookstore to read, and I just happened to run into Shen Weiyue."
"Then..."
"There were no seats, so I just found a place to sit."
"Oh."
Zhao Qingyan glanced indifferently at the romance novel in her hand and revealed a meaningful expression: "A romance novel, huh?"
Ning Xi blushed and quickly hid the book behind her back, but the next second, she thought of something.
Why am I so nervous? What young girl doesn't dream of romance? What's wrong with reading a romance novel? You're so high and mighty, you're so great.
She took the book out again and generously handed it to Zhao Qingyan: "Do you want to read it? It's really good."
"No, I'm not interested." Zhao Qingyan scoffed and shook her head. She grabbed the book from Shen Weiyue's hand to inspect it, then nodded with satisfaction.
"Shen Weiyue, where is that secret test paper you mentioned?"
"Over there, in the supplementary materials section. You'll see it once you go over."
Shen Weiyue snatched the book back and continued reading with great interest.
"You help me get it."
"Go yourself. I'm at a really good part right now."
He impatiently waved the book to shoo Zhao Qingyan away, but accidentally hit her with it. With a slap, the book even bounced back.
A cold light flashed in Zhao the Fox's eyes, and she was about to explode, but she saw the Donkey with his head down, reading, completely oblivious. He probably didn't mean it.
Zhao the Fox consoled herself and headed toward the supplementary materials section.
Shen Weiyue thought to himself, that was close. Although it was perfect, he really didn't mean it.
Ning Xi witnessed it all and was too shocked to speak. She knew how cold and irritable Zhao Qingyan could be, yet she was so tolerant toward Shen Weiyue—the sun must have risen in the west.
