128: Chapter 128 "Transporting Supplies"
Since they were close to the base and the surrounding roads were quite smooth, Qi Yin didn't choose an off-road vehicle for the trip, but instead took a spacious and comfortable RV.
Xu Yongning acted as the driver, while everyone else lounged comfortably in the back.
Jiang Yao didn't lift his head from his tablet until the tail of the convoy had driven out of the base's line of sight.
“Sister Yin, we're out of the base's surveillance range.”
Qi Yin glanced at the high-flying drones outside the window and sat up straight.
“Keep an eye on them. Let me know if there are any changes.”
She didn't plan to let the convoy go too far. After all, all the supplies were in her hands. With such a large team, going too far would increase the probability of exposure, which wouldn't be a good thing.
The convoy turned a corner and stopped at a shaded spot at the foot of a mountain, not particularly far from the base.
“Alright, let's stop here.”
Qi Yin jumped out of the car and stretched.
The weather seemed quite nice today. Sunlight filtered through the sparse branches and leaves, feeling quite comfortable on her body.
No wonder so many people liked sunbathing.
She looked around and found the place quite spacious; it wouldn't be a problem to accommodate so many of them.
Although Meng Xichi hadn't been with Qi Yin for long, he basically knew their team's routine. When they weren't busy with tasks, it was time to arrange some entertainment.
Without Qi Yin saying a word, he spontaneously arranged for the team members to spread out and keep watch.
Since they were all her own people, Qi Yin wasn't afraid of revealing her space. She took out several sets of picnic mats, self-heating hot pots, fresh beef and mutton, several large buckets of water, a barbecue grill, and plenty of warm black tea.
Seeing this, Xu Yongning strode forward to help organize. “Are we having barbecue for lunch?”
Qi Yin curled her lips into a light smile and snapped her fingers: “Correct! But, there's no prize!”
The soldiers weren't familiar with her, so Meng Xichi had to handle the communication.
“Come on, everyone, don't just stand there watching. Help out if you can. Thanks to Sister Yin, we're in for a treat this lunch!” Meng Xichi was also a hearty person.
The soldiers thought: Brother Chi, we seem to be here on a mission, not for a scenic picnic.
Looking back, they all exchanged glances, but that beef looked really high quality and seemed delicious.
Military orders were like mountains; enjoy first, talk later.
The group was bustling as if they were in a battle, cutting meat and washing vegetables, full of joy.
Young girls always look for fun when they have nothing to do. When Lu Jinwen and the sisters, Li Shi and Li Yun, saw this setup, their eyes lit up, and they cheered as they sat down.
While the others were still preparing the food, they sat around the campfire.
“Ta-da! I brought cards.” Lu Jinwen pulled a deck of cards from her pocket like a magic trick.
She had known they wouldn't go far, so she brought them to pass the time on the road.
Qi Yin playfully tapped the bridge of her nose: “You're so clever.”
Li Shi and Li Yun said, “Come on, let's start.”
Jiang Yao raised his hand. “Count me in.” Small tasks like barbecuing didn't need him.
Thus, at the foot of the mountain with wisps of smoke, amidst the wandering zombies, a peculiar scene appeared.
A hundred empty trucks were parked in circles. A group of men in black were busy everywhere, while in the middle, a few people sat cross-legged on mats, laughing and playing cards.
Li Shi and Li Yun were young and played poorly, losing frequently. Their faces were covered in paper strips by Qi Yin and Lu Jinwen. They pouted in frustration, drawing bursts of laughter from everyone.
Jiang Yao laughed loudly, “Haha, little sisters, Yin Yin is being too unscrupulous. Watch your big brother get revenge for you.”
Just as he was preparing to dominate the game, Qi Yin and Lu Jinwen shared a tacit look.
Ten minutes later, the paper strips on Jiang Yao's face were more than double those on Li Shi and Li Yun's.
Li Shi and Li Yun laughed, “Brother Yao, we'd better get revenge ourselves, hahaha.”
A long-awaited barbecue meal left everyone satisfied, sitting by the fire with no desire to move.
They lingered until the afternoon when the sun began to tilt westward. Qi Yin checked the time and felt it was about right.
“Pack up, time to work!”
She stood up and brushed off the bits clinging to her pants.
While the team members were cleaning up the trash, Qi Yin walked to the center of the convoy. With a slight thought, she began moving things out of her space.
Her Spiritual power was now at level four, so she no longer needed a medium to transfer supplies; she just had to think about it, which was significantly more convenient.
She brought out various building materials, alloys, steel, cement, and waterproofing materials that Xiao Sinian had previously hoarded, filling the heavy trucks to the brim.
Using two tons of gold, she had replicated a million Constant Temperature Suits. She took ten thousand of them and packed them into two of the trucks; this was her capital for trading with the President for crystal cores.
A few minutes later, the person in charge of each vehicle checked if their truck was loaded with supplies. They were dumbfounded to see the items that had appeared out of thin air in the previously empty cargo beds.
Had they encountered an immortal?
Although puzzled, it wasn't their place to ask.
The return journey was much livelier. With the convoy fully loaded, their speed was naturally much slower. But what was that saying Grandpa Yuan might have said? The thing I regret most in my life is letting you eat too much.
Whenever they encountered scattered, wandering zombies on the road, Lu Jinwen and the others would habitually jump off the trucks without Qi Yin saying a word.
“Same old rules: a competition to see who kills the most! Whoever loses washes the dishes tonight!” She had the loudest voice and was the first to rush out.
“You're on! Do you think I'm afraid of you?” As the older brother, Jiang Yao naturally wouldn't be outdone, charging forward with fireballs.
Li Shi and Li Yun timidly raised their hands: “We want to go too.”
Looking at the sisters' sparkling eyes, how could Qi Yin say no? Besides, she'd be watching over them, so nothing would go wrong. If they wanted to go, they should go.
“Go ahead!”
The two sisters beamed with joy. Although their Light-based Superpower wasn't primarily for attacking, it had a clever use. With a flash of brilliant light between their fingers, the zombies hit by it would be momentarily blinded and stand dazed in place.
In this way, the zombies became sitting ducks.
“Thanks, sisters!” Lu Jinwen was the cleverest. Having discovered this exploit, she specifically stayed by their side, reaping the dazed zombies with her blade. Her merit points soared.
“Damn, Jinwen, you're cheating!” Jiang Yao noticed.
“All's fair in war.” As long as the zombies were killed, it wasn't cheating, haha.
Qi Yin sat in the car, her mouth never stopping as she either munched on an apple or chewed on a cucumber. Watching them full of vigor and competing with each other outside, a smile couldn't help but appear on her face.
By the time the convoy returned to the gates of Xiyin Base, it was pitch black outside.
From a distance, they could see the base was brightly lit. A person was pacing back and forth at the gate, craning his neck to look out; it was the President.
Seeing them return unscathed, the President clearly breathed a sigh of relief and jogged over to meet them.
“Oh, my little ancestors, you're finally back. Seeing it get dark, my heart has been in my throat...”
Qi Yin jumped down from the car, thinking that this old man's worries were quite unnecessary.
“We cleared some scattered zombies on the way, which took some time. Everything is here; please count them...”
