72: Chapter 72 The Li Family Suffers Misfortune
This time, Yao Xu and Red-Hair did not step forward.
He pushed the wife of one of the workers forward.
"You, knock on the door!"
The worker's wife was an honest, rural woman; she was terrified of Yao Xu and had no choice but to comply.
"Bang, bang, bang!"
"Is anyone there? Can you help us? Even a bite to eat would do."
Perhaps because she hadn't had a full meal in a long time, her voice sounded very weak.
The knocking continued.
Inside the villa, Li Wen, his wife, and their two fifteen-year-old twin daughters huddled on the sofa, looking at each other.
Mrs. Li was a classic beauty, and before the Apocalypse, age had left no marks on her face.
"Husband, what should we do? Should we chase them away?"
But the woman outside sounded so pitiful.
Li Wen ran over and looked through the peephole, seeing a thinly dressed woman whose pale complexion suggested she had been starving for days.
He was a gentle businessman, the kind of good Boss Li that workers talked about—he always paid more than the required wages.
Thanks to his two daughters who loved reading Apocalypse novels, they had indeed stockpiled quite a lot of supplies in the basement.
This was the fundamental reason they had been able to hold out until now.
Just as Li Wen was hesitating about whether or not to let her in, the woman outside spoke again.
"Boss, have mercy. It's really too cold outside. Can you let me in to warm up? Even just a drink of water would do."
The woman wore a smile on her face, but her eyes were scrutinizing the villa in front of her.
Li Wen hesitated, but Mrs. Li was right there beside him; although she didn't say it explicitly, the pleading look in her eyes was very obvious.
His heart softened, and in the end, he opened the door.
Seeing the door open, the woman hurriedly bowed and scraped.
"Thank you, thank you so much."
Before she had even entered the house, Yao Xu and about twenty people rushed in from the side of the villa.
However, on the surface, they were still showering them with thanks.
As the saying goes, one doesn't hit a smiling face. Even though Li Wen and his wife hadn't expected so many people, their long-standing upbringing made it impossible for him to lose his temper.
Yao Xu and his group entered the house, looking here and there.
The warm air made them let out a sigh of comfort.
This family actually had a fireplace; it was simply too comfortable.
The Li family didn't have extra chairs, so the woman who had knocked on the door sat obediently on the floor.
"Um, Boss, do you have any food at home? We've been starving for several days and really can't hold on any longer."
Mrs. Li was just about to say yes, but Li Wen stopped her.
"Sigh, we've been trapped here for over a month now, and the food we prepared is almost all gone. You should rest for a bit and then leave quickly; the house is small and really can't accommodate so many people."
The key was that when Li Wen looked at Yao Xu, he felt that he didn't seem like a good person.
However, what he didn't understand was that it's easy to invite a god in, but hard to send it away.
Yao Xu and his gang had no intention of leaving once they stepped inside the house.
He rolled his eyes, scanned the four members of the Li family, and then forced an awkward smile.
"What should I call you, sir?"
These people had rosy complexions and clean clothes; they didn't look like they were lacking food or clothing at all.
Want to chase him away? Hah, that's a pipe dream.
Li Wen paused. "My surname is Li."
Yao Xu stood up from the sofa with a smile. "Mr. Li, I know you are a kind-hearted person. Look at us; many of us are about to starve to death. If you have any edible food, please spare us a bite. If not, even expired food will do."
"This..."
Mrs. Li poked his arm from the side and whispered, "Why don't we just give them some food to send them away?"
Li Wen just wanted to get these people to leave quickly, so he nodded.
Subsequently, the two of them brought out two boxes of bread from the kitchen and poured them some hot water.
Their twin daughters hid behind them, looking somewhat afraid throughout the whole process.
Everything looked normal.
Yao Xu and the others kept expressing their gratitude and talking about the miserable situation outside.
Li Wen relaxed his vigilance slightly and began to doubt whether it was right to chase them away.
He even felt that taking these people in to increase their strength wouldn't be bad.
In that case, when they really encountered zombies, they wouldn't be so passive.
When night fell completely and the cold wind howled outside the window, Li Wen no longer mentioned letting them leave the Li family home.
However, it was his overflowing kindness that allowed the wolves to bare their fangs.
In the middle of the night, just after the Li family had gone to sleep, the bedroom door was suddenly knocked on.
Yao Xu brought several men with fierce expressions and blocked the door.
At this moment, the smile on Yao Xu's face disappeared. He slowly loosened his wrists, and a cluster of flames sprang up in his palm.
"Boss Li, thank you for your hospitality, but in this world, kindness alone isn't enough to survive."
Yao Xu said with a sinister smile, "I think this house of yours is nice. There must be plenty of good things in the basement, right? And these two daughters of yours, they look so fresh and pretty..."
Li Wen's face turned deathly pale. He finally understood that he had thought too simply of human nature.
He immediately shielded his wife and daughters behind him. "What do you want to do? I let you in for shelter, and this is how you repay me?"
"Repay?" Red-Hair stepped forward quickly, as if he had heard a funny joke.
His strength was surprisingly great, and he shoved Li Wen aside.
"Me fancying your daughters is your good fortune. Be smart, hand over the basement key, and let your wife and daughters have some fun with our brothers. Maybe then, we might leave you a way to live."
Mrs. Li and the two daughters were trembling with fear.
Li Wen's eyes were bloodshot with rage; he grabbed the vase on the table and threw it at them.
"Bastards, I'll fight you to the death."
But as an ordinary person, how could he possibly be a match for a strength-type Ability User like Red-Hair?
Red-Hair easily blocked the vase and knocked Li Wen to the ground with one punch.
Mrs. Li screamed and lunged forward, but she was pulled away by Yao Xu and dragged into his arms.
A disgusting smell assailed her nostrils, making Mrs. Li retch uncontrollably.
"Ah!"
"Dad! Mom!"
The two girls were so scared they hugged each other and cried bitterly.
Inside the warm hilltop villa, Qi Yin was playing chess with Mu Feng.
The two of them hadn't thought much of each other before, but after this period of getting along, the situation had improved quite a bit.
At least they weren't in a state of constantly bickering or looking down on each other anymore.
After several rounds, Mu Feng lost to Qi Yin by a single move.
Qi Yin clapped her hands and stood up. "Not bad, you've improved."
Mu Feng didn't expect that Qi Yin would ever praise him one day, and he felt a bit embarrassed.
Xu Yongning's appearance broke the awkward atmosphere.
"Hmm? Aren't you supposed to be on patrol?" Qi Yin asked.
"Sister Yin, that family surnamed Li at the hillside villa is in trouble," Xu Yongning said hurriedly.
The family surnamed Li? What did that have to do with her?
Qi Yin took a sip of hot tea. "So?"
"Boss Li's father once saved my life. Sister Yin, I can't watch them die."
Qi Yin understood; he meant that he had to go.
That family surnamed Li must have had an overflow of saintly kindness, inviting ghosts into their home.
