65: Chapter 65 The Arrival of Extreme Cold
Some people experienced a massive increase in physical strength.
Others found their speed had become much faster than before.
The term "Ability User" began to spread among a small circle of survivors, along with the appearance of zombies.
Jiang Yao, munching on a fresh cucumber, strode up to Qi Yin.
"Sister Yin, Ability Users have started appearing in the capital."
The tang dao was polished to a brilliant shine by Qi Yin. Taking one look at the man in the video breaking a boulder on his chest, Qi Yin knew that the real nightmare was about to begin.
"Don't compare yourselves to others; your Supernatural Abilities are already approaching Level Three."
This was their advantage.
Most early Ability Users had weak and unstable powers, and besides, blessings often mask misfortunes.
A cool breeze blew past. Qi Yin extended her hand, and a white crystal landed on her warm palm, only to melt quickly.
She looked up, gazing through the fading daylight, and saw countless white specks drifting down slowly.
"Huh? It's August, why is it snowing all of a sudden?"
Jiang Yao was baffled and hurriedly ran back inside.
Just as he grabbed a blanket and was about to go back out, he saw the temperature control console that Qi Yin had him install a few days ago light up with a red warning light and emit a sharp alarm.
"Sister Yin, Brother Quan, come quickly, look at this! The temperature isn't right!"
Qi Yin walked quickly to the console.
On the screen, the temperature curve outside the shelter was displayed.
Over the past two hours, the temperature had plummeted in an almost vertical line.
It had suddenly dropped from the original twenty-something degrees to minus five degrees.
Lu Jinwen hurriedly ran out to take a look; there were more and more white crystals, slowly accumulating into a thin layer of white ice on the sunroom roof.
"My god, it's really snowing."
Qi Yin shook her head: "That's not snow; it's ice particles formed when water vapor rapidly encounters extremely cold air."
This also told them that the temperature was dropping too fast.
"Brother Yan Xiu, tell Mu Feng to get ready, do not go outside, the generator must not fail, ensure the heating supply for the shelter."
"The extreme cold is here!"
In her past life, quite a few people froze to death during this half-year-long extreme cold.
Half of the men left to her by Xiao Sinian had been taken by Mu Feng to the cave.
At this stage, it was absolutely safe there; Dr. Zhou Zhiheng and his assistants were also settled there.
Mu Feng received the message and opened the door. A blast of intense cold air hit his face, almost knocking him over.
"Attention everyone, immediately initiate the cold-weather protection plan, check all heating equipment. Going outside is prohibited unless necessary. I repeat, going outside is prohibited unless necessary."
Inside the laboratory, the two Old Professors, who had been reading while drinking hot tea, instinctively wrapped their coats tighter around themselves.
They exchanged a glance, their eyes filled with worry.
"Sigh, the world is really going to change," Zhou Zhiheng couldn't help but sigh.
Chen Jun wasn't quite as sentimental; his task was to make weapons.
"Oh my, it's time. I'm going to go check on my treasures."
He feigned relaxation, but his stumbling footsteps betrayed his panic.
Over at the villa, Xu Yongning and Lu Yanxiu, along with the team members who had just finished training and were still steaming with sweat, couldn't help but shiver when they felt the cold air coming from the vents.
"Brother, will this temperature drop even further?"
The twenty team members looked at each other, deeply worried about this erratic weather.
After a period of getting along, they were now as close as brothers with Lu Yanxiu and the other.
Lu Yanxiu had just finished stir-frying a large pot of fragrant tomato beef brisket over rice.
"No, no, no!"
Everyone laughed when they heard that.
"I knew it, weather this extreme surely won't last long..."
Before he could finish his sentence, a large mouthful of beef was stuffed into his mouth.
It had perfect color, aroma, and taste. In a word: delicious!
But Lu Yanxiu's next words shattered their illusions.
"Train well. Why is it called 'extreme cold'? Its duration will only be longer than you imagine."
In the face of nature, humans are insignificant.
All they can do is try their best to survive.
"Eat quickly! After you finish, you get one hour of rest. Whoever finishes last does the dishes!"
Consequently, the young men who were just immersed in disappointment, in order to get some rest and avoid washing dishes, began to gorge themselves wildly.
Whatever, one step at a time.
The worst that can happen is death!
Just do it!
The next day,
Qi Yin had been running for three hours after setting the treadmill to its fastest speed.
Lu Jinwen, right next to her, barely managed to run for an hour before giving up.
"Wow, Sister, I declare that you are the absolute best."
You really are risking your life!
Xiao Bai was on the side, happily munching on the chicken breast Chen Quan had made for it, thoroughly enjoying itself.
"Master, your current physical fitness allows you to take down fifty Level One zombies without using your Supernatural Ability."
Qi Yin smiled. She was pushing herself to the limit every day and consuming spiritual spring water like it was food, not just to hack down a few Level One zombies.
What she wanted was to be stronger.
If she wasn't mistaken, although the zombies were still Level One, their hearing and sense of smell had been enhanced compared to before.
Furthermore, with the temperature dropping, the zombies, having been hungry for nearly a month, were about to head out to find "food."
Qi Yin was right. People discovered that the number of zombies wandering on the main roads of the capital had started to increase.
Some of them waited outside supermarkets where survivors were searching for food, while others just wandered around aimlessly.
Moreover, this wave of zombies was very sharp; basically, the firepower that used to be enough to wipe out ten zombies could now only take down a third of that number.
Coupled with the weather rapidly dropping to minus thirty degrees, the armed forces dispatched by the authorities were gradually becoming unable to cope.
Some zombies had even become smart enough to wander to the foot of the hill where her shelter was located.
Lu Jinwen suggested killing the zombies, but Qi Yin refused.
Why kill them?
To them, zombies were not scary.
On the contrary, it was humans they needed to guard against.
Those zombies at the foot of the hill could serve as the first layer of defense for the shelter.
Unless they were Ability Users, who would dare to approach?
Hearing her say this, Lu Jinwen even hoped for more zombies at the foot of the hill.
It would be best if they blocked the road entirely.
In just three days, the temperature plummeted to over minus forty degrees.
Already lacking electricity, the difficulty of survival in the city below had increased by a large margin.
Standing on the watchtower, Qi Yin could almost hear sporadic sounds of looting and screaming.
She picked up her binoculars. In the view, the order that had barely recovered thanks to the authorities' intervention a couple of days ago had once again fallen into chaos.
The bottom-tier people living in the slums were short on clothing and food. In order to seek a glimmer of hope for survival, some Ability Users who had awakened strength-based Supernatural Abilities spontaneously formed teams.
They flooded into the wealthy district like madmen, with a long line of ordinary people following behind them.
Naturally, the zombies wouldn't let such a large amount of "food" go.
Thus, on the road to the wealthy district, a scene of swarms of zombies chasing people played out.
"Boring."
Qi Yin had seen such scenes far too many times and had become numb to them.
Just as she was about to come down, a familiar figure appeared in her sight.
