378: Inheritance Trial
Wan Lin had spent a considerable amount of time in the Xuanhuan World; he was no longer the novice he once was.
Because he was dissatisfied with both the cultivation methods of the Five Elements Dao Lineage and the Yuyao Kingdom, he had been stuck at the Spirit Accumulation stage, never progressing further, unwilling to let his Dao Lineage Foundation solidify.
Having finally reached the area beyond the Northern Great Wall, and about to obtain the Yao Race Body Tempering Method Legacy, Wan Lin grew excited.
While following the Sheep Demon further north, he asked curiously:
"What is the Body Tempering Method Legacy like?
Will a Yao Race Senior personally impart the method to me? Or is it recorded on jade slips? Or perhaps in some ancient texts or classics?"
The Sheep Demon laughed and said, "It's not that mundane. Don't worry, you won't be disappointed."
The clusters of stone tablets in the north grew increasingly numerous. Wan Lin felt the temperature drop significantly, as if lingering resentment was swirling across the grassland.
If lore-enthusiast players were here, they would be so excited they wouldn't be able to move, absolutely refusing to leave until they had thoroughly investigated the history of the Yao Race.
But Wan Lin was only reluctantly acting as an exploration player for the leaderboard rewards; he was certainly not a lore enthusiast.
All he could think about now was the Body Tempering Method promised by the Yao Race.
According to his agreement with the Sheep Demon, as long as he confirmed that the Body Tempering Method was legitimate, he would spread the news among the player community, calling on more players to come to the Yao Race outside the wall to receive the Legacy.
And subsequently help them oppose the Yuyao Kingdom.
Wan Lin felt this was no difficulty at all; if the Body Tempering Method truly existed, based on his understanding of his fellow players, countless numbers of them would cross the Great Wall.
"We have arrived."
After an unknown amount of time passed, the Sheep Demon stopped.
Wan Lin looked ahead. It was still a snow-covered grassland, but in front of them stood a tall, bare mountain, devoid of flora, covered only in jagged rocks and a mantle of white snow.
It looked quite imposing.
The Sheep Demon began to explain:
"That is 'Sacred Emperor Mountain.' In the distant past, one of our Yao Race mighty figures attained the Dao on this mountain, forging an ultimate Physical Body and possessing a mighty fist capable of destroying the entire world.
He was later revered as the 'Sacred Emperor' and tore open the Immortal Path with his fist, achieving Ascension."
The Sheep Demon's eyes were filled with yearning.
When the Sacred Emperor was present, it was the most prosperous era for the Yao Race.
"Sacred Emperor?"
Wan Lin noted the name. "That sounds quite imposing. He must be a major figure. So, the Legacy I am to receive is what the Sacred Emperor left behind?"
The Sheep Demon nodded, pointing his hoof toward Sacred Emperor Mountain:
"Starting from the base of the mountain and going upward, the winding path has distinct height divisions. The very first level we call the 'Dead Flesh Layer.' Those who stop at this layer are hopelessly dead flesh, with no possibility of further progress.
The second level we call the 'Living Flesh Layer.' The Physical Body that reaches this level, while not necessarily mighty, can still be strengthened through Acquired refinement, thus granting a path to life.
The third level, the 'Transformation Layer.' Only through the transformation of the Physical Body can one pass this layer.
The fourth level, the 'Sacred Emperor Layer.' Reaching this level grants the Sacred Emperor Legacy. However... for over ten thousand years, not a single demon has ever reached this layer."
Wan Lin frowned. "What does that mean? Do I have to reach the final layer to get the Legacy? What if I fail at one of the preceding layers?"
The Sheep Demon shook his head, saying, "In fact, every layer has a corresponding Legacy.
Even if you only reach the worst, the first layer, there will be a corresponding Legacy.
It just won't be the supreme Legacy left by the Sacred Emperor."
Wan Lin nodded. "I understand. How much I can obtain depends entirely on the individual, right?"
Wan Lin thought that even if he couldn't obtain it himself, as long as he called his fellow players over, someone was bound to succeed.
At that point, he could just listen to their advanced experiences, and he would definitely be able to obtain the complete Legacy eventually.
"Huh?"
Just then, Wan Lin suddenly noticed that there were many members of the Yao Race beside Sacred Emperor Mountain, varying in form and size, standing silently in the wind and snow, all possessing an imposing, natural authority.
"Those are the elders of our Yao Race. They all intend to see which layer you can ultimately climb to.
After all... you are the first Human Race member to climb Sacred Emperor Mountain in so many years."
Wan Lin walked toward Sacred Emperor Mountain, feeling a touch of nervousness.
A great Toad Demon looked at him and said:
"Human Race kid, I advise you to give up. You can choose a different condition."
Another Horse Demon spoke:
"To pass the Transformation Layer, one must achieve Bloodline Ancestral Return and gain the power of an ancient Divine Beast. In ten thousand years, none of us have ever passed it, so you, a Human Race member, shouldn't even consider it."
The Eagle Demon landed on the grass and likewise advised:
"Change your condition. We will satisfy anything we can. This is for your own good."
Wan Lin smiled and said, "No matter, I plan to try first."
The Toad Demon narrowed its eyes. "If you die, we will have to contact someone else, which will waste a lot of time."
"You don't need to worry about that. I will undergo Rebirth and resurrection after death; I won't waste your time. Besides, didn't you already know this?"
Wan Lin thought for a moment. He wasn't stupid; he instantly understood. "Could it be that you are afraid of the powerful figures potentially backing me, or the unique methods of us Extraterrestrial Demons, afraid that we might destroy Sacred Emperor Mountain?"
The demons fell silent.
Finally, a Snake Demon that possessed a rather Dragon-like form hovered in the air and said:
"Wan Lin, go ahead and try climbing the mountain."
Although this Snake Demon was a side branch of a side branch of the Dragon descendants, and its Bloodline was long impure, it held great authority within the Yao Race.
Once he spoke, the other members of the Yao Race stopped trying to dissuade Wan Lin.
Wan Lin made a guarantee: "Don't worry, I still want to cooperate properly with you all. I won't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs; Sacred Emperor Mountain won't be ruined."
Wan Lin stepped onto the winding mountain path.
This model, where one continuously receives the Legacy as they climb, was relatively novel for players.
Wan Lin was certain that even if he failed to obtain the Legacy, and even if other players weren't guaranteed to get it, just surrounding Sacred Emperor Mountain and selling tickets would be enough for him and the Yao Race outside the wall to make a fortune.
Whoosh—
The wind and snow blew, seemingly growing fiercer.
However, the moment Wan Lin's feet both stepped onto the path, the snow instantly stopped.
Even the wind ceased, leaving silence.
"Hmm?"
Wan Lin looked back, but could not see the other members of the Yao Race.
"A Secret Realm? A Grotto-Heaven? A Half Grotto-Heaven? Or a barrier?"
Wan Lin was deep in thought. As the location of the Legacy, Sacred Emperor Mountain must have some special design; it wasn't an ordinary mountain range.
"The first layer is the Dead Flesh Layer, and I'm currently at the base of the mountain, not having stepped onto it yet. I feel..."
Wan Lin was about to say that there were no enemies nearby and the trial seemed very simple.
He suddenly felt waves of pressure assaulting his body.
His steps faltered, and he nearly tumbled to the ground.
"This is..."
Wan Lin managed to steady himself with difficulty, feeling a bit lost, and tentatively walked a few steps upward.
"Gravity?"
