13: Chapter 13 Isolde
Byron discovered that the name of the mentor belonging to each spire was hung on its main gate, along with a strict prohibition against students entering without cause.
Therefore, he only needed to search for them one by one.
Without delay, Byron walked along the path, searching through the spires one by one.
During this time, he also saw several familiar-looking youths; presumably, they were also here to report to their mentors.
However, each of them was being led by a different creature.
Seeing their inquisitive gazes, Byron merely offered an awkward yet polite smile.
Not long after, Byron found the doorplate hanging on a gate that belonged to Potion Dept. Mentor Isold Ross.
Just as Byron was about to knock on the door, a youth in his twenties, sporting a messy, bird's-nest-like mop of red hair and deep-set eyes with heavy dark circles, pushed the door open and stepped out, coming face-to-face with Byron.
The youth showed no surprise upon seeing Byron and immediately flashed a bright smile.
"Hello, you must be Byron Augustus, right?"
Byron was stunned for a moment, then quickly nodded: "Yes, I am Byron Augustus. May I ask who you are..."
The youth smiled and said: "I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Colin Willock, and I am also a student of Mentor Isolde. You can call me Senior Colin."
Byron nodded politely: "Hello, Senior Colin."
"Alright, let's go in now. Let's not keep Mentor waiting too long."
After saying this, Colin turned and walked into the spire, with Byron following closely behind.
Walking into the spire, what greeted Byron's eyes was a two-story high hall and a massive floor-to-ceiling window.
The hall was surrounded by bookshelves reaching the ceiling, filled with books.
In the center of the hall stood a set of sofas made of an unknown material, arranged in a semi-circle. On the low table in the center sat a bottle containing a red liquid in a transparent container, along with several transparent glass cups.
Leading the way, Colin smiled and asked: "Looking at you all alone without even a guide servant, did you also complete your enrollment registration with Wizard Philip?"
Seeing Byron's confusion, Colin realized: "Wizard Philip is that old man with glasses, white hair, and chubby cheeks."
Byron then realized that Colin was talking about that greedy old man, and nodded.
"Hahaha, I figured it must be him. Other wizards would never act like that; it's truly detestable!"
Seeing Byron's confusion, Colin explained.
"He was the one who handled my enrollment registration, too. Because I didn't pay him the terrain consultation fee, he didn't assign a servant to guide me."
"Back then, it took me a great deal of effort to find my mentor. I was even almost abducted by a Necromancy mentor to be used as a test subject. Thinking about it now, I still feel a bit scared."
Hearing this, Byron understood; it turned out he wasn't the only one who had been scammed by that old geezer.
Byron also developed a bit of liking for Colin; after all, they were both in the same boat.
However, he merely offered a bitter smile in response, slowly shaking his head without echoing Colin's sentiment.
After all, insulting a wizard in front of others was definitely unwise, and since he had only just met Colin, he needed to be cautious with his words and actions.
Meanwhile, Byron followed behind Colin as they stepped onto the dark blue stone stairs leading upstairs.
The stairs spiraled upwards, and the lamps hanging on the walls emitted a warm yellow light, giving Byron the feeling of an ancient castle belonging to medieval nobility.
Reaching the second floor, Colin, who was walking in front, pushed open the closed door and led Byron inside.
The entire Laboratory was a massive, circular space covering over three hundred square meters.
A huge crystal dome refracted the dim daylight from outside, illuminating the ten-meter-long metal workstation in the center.
"The entire second floor is the Mentor's Laboratory. You must keep quiet after entering."
Colin lowered his voice intentionally to remind him.
Byron nodded: "Thank you for the reminder, Senior."
Colin nodded with a smile and gestured to Byron: "The Mentor is right there."
While Colin was saying this, Byron had already seen Potion Dept. Mentor Isold Ross.
Upon seeing Potion Dept. Mentor Isold Ross, Byron was stunned and didn't react immediately.
At this moment, a woman was standing in front of the workstation in the center, shaking a bright blue liquid in a transparent container.
Her skin was so fair it was almost translucent, and her long silver-gray hair was loosely tied behind her head, shimmering under the daylight.
Her features were exquisite and cold, and her eyes were a pale gray-blue, like a peerless gemstone.
She wore a sharply tailored deep purple wizard robe, which outlined her slender figure.
"You must be Byron Augustus. Being able to obtain a fourth-rank Aptitude financial aid agreement is quite good."
"With the help of that agreement, I presume your path as a wizard will be much smoother in the future."
Just then, a voice with a hint of lazy magnetism rang out in the room.
At this moment, Isolde had already put down the test tube and was looking at Byron with those gray-blue eyes.
As the voice sounded, Colin stood up straight instantly, his expression becoming incredibly serious.
Byron also kept his eyes focused on his nose and heart; the moment his gaze met the woman's, he immediately lowered his eyes, placed one hand on his chest, and bowed deeply.
"Respected Mentor Isolde, new student Byron Augustus, pays his respects to you."
Isolde nodded slightly: "Then, Byron Augustus, are you willing to become my student?"
As soon as these words were spoken, Byron did not hesitate, placing a hand on his chest: "It is my supreme honor. I am willing, Mentor Isolde."
Isolde nodded: "Very well, you are now a Disciple of Isold Ross."
"Now, let Colin take you to familiarize yourself with the environment and introduce you to some basic information."
"Wait until tomorrow afternoon, after you finish your first class of the term, then come to the Laboratory. Come to me then, and I will give you further instructions."
Having said that, Isolde ignored the two of them and turned back to continue her experiment.
Prompted by Colin, Byron followed him out of the second-floor Laboratory, and the two walked in silence until they reached the outside of the spire.
Walking on the main road, Colin's mouth curled into a mischievous smile. He nudged Byron and teased: "Junior, were you stunned just now?"
Looking at Colin's mischievous expression, how could Byron possibly follow his lead?
"I didn't expect it. When I was looking through the materials at first, I thought the Mentor was a man. I didn't expect such a result."
Colin seemed to have his memories stirred by Byron's words and sighed with emotion: "That's true. When I looked at the materials back then, I also thought the Mentor was a man."
"This led to me almost losing all face when I first met the Mentor. I wanted to die on the spot."
Colin's words aroused Byron's curiosity: "So, what exactly happened?"
Colin: "At that time..."
Just as he started, Colin realized what he was doing and shut his mouth.
Why would he tell someone else about his own embarrassing story? He changed the subject.
"Junior, besides the students who have already graduated, our Mentor has three other students."
"The first is Elena Carrey. She looks good, but her personality is hard to describe. You'll know once you meet her."
"The second is Finn Clev. He doesn't like to talk and spends every day either in the Library or conducting experiments. The third is me, and you are ranked fourth."
"..."
As Colin spoke, Byron listened quietly from the side, recording everything with the Eye of Omniscience and building behavioral analysis profiles for the three of them.
Being a newcomer, figuring out their backgrounds would be useful for dealing with them in the future.
